OVERVIEW

The highly anticipated and requested bass version of the popular multi-effect Fly Rig 5, complete with SansAmp, OCTAFILTER and more.

Finally after a flood of requests, Tech 21 has developed a bass version of the Fly Rig 5. They put everything they could fit into one multi-effect unit—except the kitchen sink.

SANSAMP
SansAmp, of course, is at its center, with its unique Character control that sweeps through the most storied vintage and modern tones. 3-band active EQ provides professional grade tweakability for any situation. For dirt and grind, Drive adds gain and overdrive. You can also add distortion by engaging the Pre-Boost. And then there’s Fuzz in the OCTAFILTER section. Each method achieves a different variety of tonal madness. You can even use all three at the same time, but be sure to hold onto your shorts.

OCTAFILTER
OCTAFILTER brings an entire re-invented pallette of expression with a crazy amount of possibilities, from Minimoog-style synth to funky town. The controls interact so that you can get dynamically-filtered clean, fuzz and octave, as well as octave and fuzz together. When Q is at minimum, Range becomes a high-cut tone filter for different versions of clean, fuzz, octave, and octave and fuzz together. You can then blend any of these combinations with your direct signal via the Mix control. But wait, there’s more. By bringing in some COMP, you can get infinite sustain like a keyboard bass.

CHORUS
CHR, derived from Tech 21's Bass Boost Chorus pedal, adds choral voicings of two instruments. With a slight delay between, it adds thickness and space.

COMP
COMP (compression) utilizes old school, all-analog, FET-based technology, which is inherently warmer, more transparent and musical.

BOOST
Switchable Pre/Post Boost. Pre-Boost mode interacts with the SansAmp section to beef up drive and distortion. Post-Boost mode increases the overall volume to punch up fills and solos.

TUNER
Chromatic Tuner is within the CHR section. You simply hold down the CHR footswitch to engage the Tuner, which simultaneously mutes the signal path.

  • Built-in SansAmp, OCTAFILTER, COMP, BOOST, CHR and Tuner

Comments about Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig Multi-Effects Pedal:

I was really looking forward to this product when it was announced. It had everything in it that I wanted, VT bass amp sim, octaver, fuzz, filter, boost, chorus, compressor, and tuner. So the good is the VT bass sim, chorus, and boost work well. I found the rest of the unit leaves a lot to be desired. The octaver is terrible and doesn't track well. I don't expect most octavers to work in the lower range of a bass, but this one had issues with midrange notes as well The fuzz just sounds bad, gated and nasty. The compressor was ok at best, a bit noisy, and sometimes interacted with the drive in a way the produced unwanted distortion. The tuner is serviceable, but after 5 minutes the tuner display goes blank. It makes it hard visually to tell if it is muted when taking a break between sets.

Comments about Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig Multi-Effects Pedal:

Good unit. The sansamp, compressor, tuner, boost, and chorus work great. The octaver and fuzz are ok but I don't really use them in my music. The headphone output is a bit noisy but it's not noisy going thru XLR or to the board via the 1/4" (ie switching on the headphone amp/output seems to add a lot of noise). I really like the overall tone of the unit and the form factor. It's also nice seeing which section is on and being able to do quick tweaks. I had bought a competing 'all in one' and returned it since it was a bit sterile sounding and had a bit of noise.

Comments about Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig Multi-Effects Pedal:

well the fuzz and the octaver may not be the best, they are definitely usable, but trying to use the same parameters for each doesn't end up being the best choice and sculpting the best sound is not possible when all are engaged. that being said, the pre-amp, boost, chorus, tuner, filter are great! the compressor is fine too, put all those together for the price and you got a good board thats easy to use and has a very wide palette of sounds to create.

Comments about Tech 21 Bass Fly Rig Multi-Effects Pedal:

Excellent pedal, lots of flexibility. Comes in a tin case and includes the power supply. They provide a ton of settings that help get Muse Uprising, Jaco, NIB, etc. It's a lot of kit in a tiny package. It's probably not going to lay down the bass for the next studio album, but it'll plug straight into the PA and do the job. Really so impressed, search youtube for "preset" demos and find real players running this thing. You'll like it.
