British rock tones in a versatile, easily-controlled pedal.
The legendary crunch of British steel and Greenback-style speakers delivers searing blues to UK anarchy from this Anglo-voiced Tech 21 distortion effect pedal. Tough Bluesbreaker overdrive, the throaty roar of a Plexi or the ballsy smack-down of a '70s Metalface, it all adds up to a well tasty spot in your face, Brit-style. However you choose to build your stack of tone, the British guitar pedal makes for serious rockin' out.
Each effect pedal in the Character Series is loaded with the tonal DNA for a specific style of guitar amplifier. By simply twisting a few knobs, you can build those sought-after tones or hot rod your own. From rare vintage classics to roaring modern icons, every variation is delivered in the distinctive voicing of that amp style. The intuitive amp-like controls let you get your hands dirty from the get-go to explore decades of blistering tones.
Being a genuine SansAmp, the CS-BR and each Character Series pedal is way more than a stompbox. Each can be used as a stand-alone preamp to drive a power amp, a studio mixer, or a PA system, with the rich SansAmp cabinet emulation that sounds huge — even straight into a computer soundcard. Or plug them into your guitar amp to take your tone somewhere special.
- Knobs: Level, Mid, Character, Drive, Low, High
- Cabinet emulation
- Stand-alone pre-amp can drive a power amp, studio mixer, or PA system
- Plug into guitar amp

Well, as you can tell from the title, I am not impressed with this pedal. The problem for me is the level control. I could not get it past 7 o'clock without it boosting the amp's volume and adding noise to the signal. Sounded ok with a Les Paul but I didn't like the sound with my SCN-loaded Strat or my Tele's. I brought mine back right away.
I play in several situations, including my own band. I had been using a modeler unit for a year and a half. The entire time I was saying to everyone "one day, my whole rig will fit in my case'. Guess what?, now it does. This IS a Tube British stack with alot of versatility. Its not extremely noisy and get a sound you can be proud of, right through the board. Dont hesitate to buy. A little reverb would have been nice , but i just let the engineer or sound man do that.
This is the seventh pedal I have from Tech 21. My original "classic" pedal is 15 years old and still works perfectly, so I expect this to be of similar quality. All of these "character series" pedals ROCK! If you want Marshall tone in a small box this does it. I can only make one small complaint about this particular model. It does not have the "speaker defeat" button that some of these "character" pedals have. That's not a huge problem in most cases, but I find that the speaker defeat feature allows me to use the same pedal direct into a board ( with speaker-emulation) OR run it into an amplifier, (without emulation.)I talked to the guys at Tech 21 and they said they will probably include that feature sometime in the future. So if that feature is crucial for your applications, then get one of the pedals that has it now. If you just need great Marshal tone fast and easy... get this one ASAP. It not only sounds like Marshalls, it FEELS EXACTLY like my old plexi or my JCM ( depending on the settings.)I could only deduct one half point for the missing button... otherwise this is FIVE STAR all the way!
Great overdrive pedal. Takes my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe to another galaxy. Tweak the knobs (example settings are given) to get an overdriven Marshall stack : AC/DC to EVH, it's in there. Can also sound like a Hiwatt stack too (Cheap Trick). Fat! I've used the SansAmp for my bass rig for many years and have always been happy with the ump it gives me. This British pedal is just as powerful. If your looking for a classic rock overdrive pedal this one will get 'er done!
I am a sound engineer/guitarist, work Live and Studio, I have been playing for 20 years. I have had all line 6 products, own a vox, fender amps. There is nothing better to go direct into a board or computer interface. Natural, warm , fat tone....you can have the knobs in any position and it sounds amazing! Built quality is incredible....this is as close to real tube amp as you can get.
