Tech 21 rocks

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Does what it claims to do. Very versatile
This amp has done everything that I've needed and expected it to do. It does exactly what it says and amplifies what you put through it without any digital effect sound or any preamp tones that most amps will give you. I have been through 5 different marshalls and 2 vox amps looking for a good sound and each amp had one great sound but I could never get the channels to interact with each other the way I wanted. I turned to tech 21 character pedals but when I ran them through the marshall and vox the amps tweeked the sound in their own way, even when the preamp was bypassed. One marshall even malfunctioned from bypassing the preamp. I got a gread deal on one of these used and I won't use anything else for practice or gigs. I run a tech 21 liverpool and california on my board into an ART tube preamp to the PE. The tube preamp just adds a bit more warmth with the real tub, even though it really is not needed. I also have a fishman Aura sixteen on my board and power it through PE and it works great. I have had multiple people come up to me and ask how I get such a great acoustic sound out of what looks to be an electric guitar amp. If you have an acoustic electric with an onboard preamp this amp will power it without an additional preamp like the Aura. If your acoustic electric just has a pick-up you will need some type of acoustic preamp before running it to this amp. Because of tech 21 products I can do full electric sets, acoustic sets, or mix them up all with the same rig.
It is a bit pricey for what it actually does.

Bought the power engine to pair up with the hd 500. Works great ... A couple of tips to make it sound great.
1 use xlr cable to keep the hum from the PE down
2 install a Jay Mitchell foam doughnut ( look it up on the gear page )as a beam blocker

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Okay, here is the deal. A lot of people buy this to use modelers with it. This is's intended use. However, I bought it to run my tube preamp with it. I have had this for about 6 months. Here is what I've found:

        1) Plenty of power. This thing can roar if you need it to.

        2) Do not thing of the controls on the back as your "main" control knobs.

Example, I don't rely on the volume knob on the back for my level, I think of it as a "wattage control" or a maximum volume control.

Then, I use the output gain on my pre to control my actual volume. Think of tone the same way. Bottom line, you will probably want an equalizer if you plan on using this amp stand alone.

All said and done, this a GREAT sounding amp! I love it. I cannot say enough good things about it. I am actually considering buying another one to have as a back up, or daisy chain the two together.

This is the beginning of a long and meaningful relationship.
Honestly, save yourself a lot of time and money,if you have any preamp (I use POD XT) there is no better choice out there for live usage.I know I tried them all !.
Built like a brick----house and look nice at the same time.
I would get another if anything happened to this one.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Very happy with my purchase. Sounds great and the vintage grill and styling does this amp justice. I don't like to opinionize things often but when I do its the straight out truth.... you won't be dissapointed with using these amps with any pre-amp device.
Just like all the other ratings my search for the perfect sounding amp with the use of my Line 6 HD500 is over. I run two of these Tech 21 Power Engine 60's on stands in stereo and it's like the audience is wearing headphones. Crystal clear audio from the guitar to the HD500 to the PE60's right to your ears ... I sold all my tube amps and now I'm a dedicated Tech 21 believer and fan!!
Solid built, Quality exceeds expectations for such a small 1x12 amp
For a one-trick pony it is priced fair, no ther product out there to really compare it to unless you're going direct to a PA

As stated before, Tech21 designed the Power Engine 60 to work with it's own Sansamp and other amp simulators... It is lightweight and sounds clear and punchy. ***Potential problem*** Some units have incapatable grounding when using the 1/4" input. This creates a loud hum in the Power Engine 60. Fixing this problem is super easy. Simply take an XLR jack and solder the 1 and 3 lugs together. Insert this jack into the Power Engine's XLR input and connect your guitar FX unit through the 1/4" jack. Problem solved. No more Hum. This is a great unit and Tech 21's Customer Service is top notch. I own numerous Tech21 products... Highly Recommended!

Have tried many options over the years for amplifying various guitar rack preamps and effect units. The Power Engine is by far the best...it allows you to get that ever elusive "headphone tone" via amplified speakers. The Celestions are ideal for guitar and this unit is built like a tank. The EQ section allows you to boost the frequencies you need to compensate for room dynamics..no hocus pocus...just high, low and mid controls that really work. I have seen some comments about noise...these reviewers need to check their noise source...for in a properly connected, high quality, power filtered and grounded rack system these amps are absolutely noise free.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Bought this to go with my Vox Tonelab and I was not disappointed. I wanted to dump my HEAVY Vox 2x120 Valvetronix (I'm getting too old to lug that around). Before I bought the Tonelab I read reviews that suggested using an amp that would not "color" the Tonelab's true output tone and the Tech 21 seemed to fit that bill. The matchup is truly awesome and the unfettered sound reproduction of the Tech 21 Power Engine is perfect. As a stage monitor or main amp, power chain, or output to mixer it works flawlessly. Played outdoors for first time this week, put main power at about 65% and it almost blew me off the stage. Also Tech 21 customer support was great when I had questions about operating on Japanese power grid (100V vs 120V). Only desire is that it have an optional 1/4 inch output to go along with the XLR out. I highly recommend this product for anybody needing more clean BOOST to their amp chain or running a multi-efx amp modeling board.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Have been looking around, trying for the right amp to use with my Pod HD500, and this one fits the bill! Lightweight, plenty of power and small enough to fit in a Tuffbox Roadcase ALONG WITH the HD500. I leave the mids flat and give a very slight boost to lows and highs. Also I've found that that I like most of the HD500's presets best when using it in Studio/Direct mode (instead of Combo Power Amp in).
The beauty of this box is it's simplicity.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Overall this is a awesome amp. I plugged in my podhd500 and adjusted the pw60's eq and rocked out. I've got a Bugera 1960 fullstack and I ran the pods outputs to the pw60 and the Bugera which is 150watts and the pw60 had the same volume level with them both cranked. It wasn't fuller sounding because of course 1 speaker doesn't push as much air as 8 but the volume level was there. If you daisy chained 4 of these together and some miner eq adjustments to the pw60's it would eat a average amp head and 4x12 for lunch. The eq on the pw60 can create speaker lag for metal or country twang it doesn't color the preamp of my podhd500 but the eq really gives the celestion lots of different charactoristics. Picking it up is like picking up a case of beer. It is light. And loud. You'll defenatly hear it over a drummer and on stage and I play metal. I am selling my stack to buy another pw60.
Great amp xlr and 1/4 in. Active eq that doesn't color the tone. Celestion seventy/80 speaker. Quality built in the u.s.a.
            Great quality all around.
Great value very loud for the price.

I use this with my BOSS GT-10. It is transparent. The sound I hear if I use my headphones is exactly the sound that comes out of the Power Engine.Even my acoustic through the GT-10 into the Power Engine sounds great. Between the pedalboard and the Power Engine My "system" is easy to setup, use, and break down. Lots of volume if needed.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Finally got my amplified violin to sound like the lovely fiddle she is. It required graphic EQ to eliminate the piezo squawk and the low frequency rumble of the bow, and reverb to make it sing. However, I could never get the sound I wanted magnified by any amplifier. It would always be distorted by whatever amplifier I was using.

I read most of the reviews about the Power Engine and was convinced enough to buy it online and untested. I would never buy an amplifier this way in the past. The Tech 21 Power Engine was EXACTLY as advertised. The music comes out clean and clear and loud. It is not at all distorted by the amp.

The PE60 is light in weight and looks cool like a vintage 50's amp. I 'throw' it on the floor in front of me, connect it to my pedal board, and let 'er fly! The open back lets me hear what I'm playing, and I have easy access to the volume knob....altho' it is clearly a "set it and forget it" amplifier, as I adjust the overall loudness with the volume control on my violin.

Your Tech 21 will be spending many hours in chuches, bars, dance halls, restaurants, boats and other unmentionable places with me! It is rock-solid, American made, and a perfect companion for 'me fiddle!

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Purchased after reading many reviews for use with Pod hd300,I had used a crate powerblock into marshall 4x12 cab, which sounded great but for the gigs we do it was overkill,so I got this so I run one of pods xlr's out to mixer, the other to the power engine. My set up it now light, quick.easy and lesscables, and now no need to mike cab.The power engine sounds pretty good now, after some tweaking of presets, not as punchy as 4x12,being an open back 1x12 but for ease of set up and sound its worth it to me.I play from blues rock to hard rock/metal(think zz top to godsmack to metallica) it suites those sounds well.If I were in a death metal band probably wouldn't cut it.Not quite as clean as a p.a. monitor but far more clarity than a standard combo amp.The ONLY small issue I fault it with is at VERY high volume cab rattles a bit.Overall I give 9 1/2 out of ten.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

You can't go wrong with this piece of equipment. If you use pedals or a multi pedal in one setup, this amp is what you are looking for. It won't get in the way of the sound your pedal is putting out.
It works great with my Line 6 HD500. Since I'm getting older, it's nice to have an amp that only weighs around 30lbs. Another positive is if you need to boost the bass or other tone, it has the treble, middle, and bass boost controls on the back of the amp. The 12" Celestion speaker has a good tone and handles the 60 watts without any problems.
The amp is high quality through out. It looks good too.
This is the best part. At a the price, it can't be beat.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

This is a good product but just wasn't for me. The location of the volume and tone controls was a real issue. I gig often and after using it just once, couldn't see myself getting used to that. Plus - and this is of course more of a modeler issue than the amp itself - I didn't feel the same way about the tone coming out of the amp as when I use my modeler pedal in stomp box mode paired with my Fender DR or Soldano HR50. Right, why did I buy this in the first place? Because I needed something for smaller venues where I might have more level and tone versatility - and mind you, I'm not a newbie to modelers and tweaking them. But between time it takes to develop decent patches and the inconsistency that comes with playing different venues, I'm sticking with tubes, overdrives & stomps because generating my tone is simpler, more consistent and more flexible on the fly. Just MHO for those of you on the fence about which way to go. I'm giving the product a hi rating because there's absolutely nothing wrong with it; it works extremely well for lots of folks, just not me. Thanks for reading.
The volume and EQ knobs are very small and on the back of the amp. If you use an angled amp stand at gigs like I do, making on the fly adjustments during a song is almost impossible.
Solid and sharp looking, good old USA build quality which was a big reason I bought it.
I can see the value in this amp - it's well made, performs, and doesn't cost too much. These days it's hard to find anything that meet those criteria.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

My old 2x12 died and I started thinking about replacement options. I am fond of Tech21 pedals (The "Blonde" personality pedal is a permanent fixture in my rig now...) and the tone they create - so I read about the PE60 and was intrigued. So, as an experiment, I decided to get one and just plug it in to the end of my pedal chain (compressor, Tech21 Blonde, digital delay, chorus, and verb.)

I am sold -- it sounds awesome. So much better than my old 2x12 setup. All of the tone comes shining through, no extra amp coloration at all. I am thrilled with this thing, and will start gigging with it soon.

PS I am semi-pro, have a day job but still play daily and gig now and then. Have been playing for 28 years or so -- but this is only the 3rd amp I've ever owned. So I'm hoping this one lasts as long as the first two!

It has always surprised me the most guitar amps are designed to dramatically engineer the guitar sound while there are so many excellent pedals out there that do the same. Why do we need both? In fact, do we really want both since the two approaches can interfere with each other. This amp is perfect for those that prefer to use pedals to shape their sound. It has lots of clear open back power to reproduce the sounds that the pedal makers intended. One of these has plenty of power for most venues but if you need to move more air just get another one connect it with an xlr cable.

I've had mine for a year and a half. Sounds great. Powerful enough, very flexible. Although my 'modeling' pre-amp has cab simulators, the sound of a good 12 inch guitar speaker is much better to have.

I bought it for the flexibility; on that it shines.
I can use it with my 'modeling' preamp for gigs that need all those sounds.
I use it with a little tube preamp for a clean jazz sound when I don't need the pedal board.
I use it as a stage monitor out of my board for when I play multiple guitars. Only one amp and no guitar cord changing. As well as when I play my synth guitar I can mix the level to the amp. If need be mix in others in my monitor. Works great this way with guest guitar players too.

Only thing I would have liked is it both inputs could be use simultaneously, or better a little mixer on board.

Comments about Tech 21 Power Engine 60:

Depsite being a tube amp user for years and heavily resisting solid state, let alone amp modellers, I picked up a POD XT Live to make recording guitars a lot less of a hassle. It worked well for me BUT I was trying to emulate these tones from my album on stage with little success. Using the POD direct to the PA sounded harsh and artificial to me. So I thought I'd try the Power Engine. Voila! The only recommendations I would make if you are using a POD thru the Power Engine is A) USE THE COMBO POWER AMP setting on the output so that the amp mic emulation is eliminated and B) avoid using the distortion/overdrive emulators on the pod. What I find sounds best is using a great distortion pedal that you like for higer gain (ie. Tube Screamer, Boss OD, Blues Driver, etc.) and using a mostly clean amp model on the POD. The emulated distortions just sound bad in a live environment.

Overall, the Power Engine 60 is perfect for small gigs (up to say a 200 person room) & rehearsals. This will be my gigging amp and I'm a tube guy. It just works and it sounds great, looks great, weighs nothing and is dead simple to use.
