Comments about Tech 21 Red Ripper Distortion Bass Effects Pedal:
This pedal is awesome. I'm able to dial in just about any type of distortion I want with the combination of the Drive and R.I.P knobs. Speaking of these settings, though, there is definitely a learning curve with the R.I.P knob. It took me a couple hours of playing around to understand how it works and how it alters the sound. It plays directly off the drive settings (if Drive is off, R.I.P does nothing) and also your playing style. You can get some pretty funky sounding synth noises from this pedal too.
By itself, the Red Ripper sounds great. I put it before my SanAmp BDDI and was blown away. The thing just sounds so mean! My current project requires a very angry sounding, downtuned bass, and this pedal delivers. For some of my side projects - classic rock and R&B - I have also been able to find great tones through this pedal. It's extremely versitile.
Alright, I'll come out and say it. I nearly returned this pedal. Trust me, play with it, learn how it works. It's not as simple as plug in and melt faces. Once you learn how the Red Ripper's settings work in concert with your playing style, you won't turn back.
All analog circuitry, and in addition to the standard drive settings there's also an active preamp section with some pretty impressive boost/cut settings. The low pass filter is also a nice addition.
Standard Tech21 quality. Bombproof case and quality pots, switches, and plugs. I've owned a SansAmp BDDI for nearly 10 years without a single problem and I expect the same reliability from the Red Ripper.
A little pricey, but I believe you get what you pay for.
