Aggressive tones and vintage filter-style effects, all completely under your control.
The Tech 21 Red Ripper Bass Distortion Pedal is more than a simple distortion box-it responds to the dynamics of your touch as you play. Play your bass harder for more fuzz and higher harmonics, ease up for less fuzz and enhanced lower harmonics.
The Red Ripper bass pedal's nasty little secret is the R.I.P. control, which powers your bass tone from vintage fuzz, to tectonic distortion and into the realms of Brassmaster-style octaver fuzz. Dime the R.I.P. and enjoy the violent stabs of a Moogie-style synth tone. While the Red Ripper can emulate the tones of an envelope filter, the signal is not actually being filtered, so your tone won't thin out and drop off when the effect is engaged.
Unlike vintage devices, all this gory fun comes with modern benefits. The Red Ripper bass pedal's active 3-band EQ delivers studio-grade tone-shaping in a compact pedal, while the Level and Drive controls let you find the sweet spot between dirt and volume. There's also a Low Pass Filter switch to compensate for full-range bass systems equipped with tweeters. Buffered bypass and a silent-switching, custom footswitch actuator complete the Red Ripper bass pedal package.
The Red Ripper bass pedal's level and drive controls work like a traditional, well-equipped amp. Low, Mid, and High are active controls, providing a wider array of tonal possibilities. The Red Ripper's Character knob is a continuously-variable control that moves seamlessly between different model voicings, covering vintage, high-gain, and face-melting lead tones. The Character and Mid controls, and the speaker emulations, are all engineered to personify the specific amplifier traits and the speakers associated with each amplifier type.
Tech 21 effects pedals are designed using the best spec components, full-metal construction and a whole lot of coffee. The result is a line of guitar and bass effects that are inspiring and eminently usable. Unlike many 'one-trick' pedals, each Tech 21 effect is a feature-rich stompbox loaded with great tones for you to explore. Tech 21 pedals boast professional details like touring-tough construction, high impedance inputs and low impedance outputs for signal integrity, with smooth, custom actuators for silent switching.

Comments about Tech 21 Red Ripper Distortion Bass Effects Pedal:
This pedal is awesome. I'm able to dial in just about any type of distortion I want with the combination of the Drive and R.I.P knobs. Speaking of these settings, though, there is definitely a learning curve with the R.I.P knob. It took me a couple hours of playing around to understand how it works and how it alters the sound. It plays directly off the drive settings (if Drive is off, R.I.P does nothing) and also your playing style. You can get some pretty funky sounding synth noises from this pedal too.
By itself, the Red Ripper sounds great. I put it before my SanAmp BDDI and was blown away. The thing just sounds so mean! My current project requires a very angry sounding, downtuned bass, and this pedal delivers. For some of my side projects - classic rock and R&B - I have also been able to find great tones through this pedal. It's extremely versitile.
Alright, I'll come out and say it. I nearly returned this pedal. Trust me, play with it, learn how it works. It's not as simple as plug in and melt faces. Once you learn how the Red Ripper's settings work in concert with your playing style, you won't turn back.
All analog circuitry, and in addition to the standard drive settings there's also an active preamp section with some pretty impressive boost/cut settings. The low pass filter is also a nice addition.
Standard Tech21 quality. Bombproof case and quality pots, switches, and plugs. I've owned a SansAmp BDDI for nearly 10 years without a single problem and I expect the same reliability from the Red Ripper.
A little pricey, but I believe you get what you pay for.

Comments about Tech 21 Red Ripper Distortion Bass Effects Pedal:
I got this pedal for Christmas last year and I have used it extensively since. Let me start off by saying this thing is EXTREMELY VERSATILE.
It's a distortion pedal, but with the level and low, mid and high knobs you can turn the R.I.P. and Drive down all the way and just use it as a bass boost if you wanted. So it's handy in that sense.
Now with the Drive. This thing is not a miracle worker. It won't give you that deep grunge sound of a tube amp. So I can see how people can be disappointed with that. BUT if you Do have a tube amp this thing can put out a BARK like no other. Even without a tube amp it can give you a nice drive sound.
The R.I.P. knob is honestly what sold me on this. I was looking for a synthy type pedal but in my search every one that I really look at sounded too cartooney I guess is the best way to describe it for me. With this knob you can balance it out with the Drive and get a sound that resembles a rabbi mountain lion foaming at the mouth LOL!
Seriously, this thing is great. If you are considering it at all you should take the plunge and go for it. I got it thinking I would use it for a few songs but I use it a LOT more than I thought I ever would. 5 out of 5.
