OVERVIEW

The undeniable deep, swirling glory of a vintage rotating speaker in a compact pedal.

With its specifically formulated SansAmp technology, the Roto Choir guitar effect pedal delivers the entire signal chain of a vintage rotating speaker, from the original tube power amp to the low-frequency speaker and high-frequency horn, to the microphone used to capture it. This studio-quiet, roadworthy pedal can be used with guitar as well as keyboards, synths, and vocals, and to record direct.

The Roto Choir features a Fast/Slow footswitch which allows you to ramp up, slow down, or even stop the rotating speaker. There's a dedicated Top Speed control to custom-set the rotor speed and a Position control to adjust the virtual mic closer to or further from the horns. Other controls include Drive to adjust the amount of compression, harmonics, and grit; active dual-band EQ; and Level.

The Roto Choir's Biamped switch allows you to change to single speaker mode and there's a Speaker Sim switch for direct recording. Stereo output, buffered bypass, and a silent-switching, custom footswitch actuator completes the package. Operable with 9V battery (not included) or optional DC power supply (Tech 21 Model #DC2). Manufactured in the U.S.A.

FEATURES
  • Vintage rotating speaker effects
  • Level, High, Low, Drive, Position, Top Speed knobs give you control over every aspect of a rotating speaker's signal chain
  • Fast/Slow footswitch
  • Speaker Sim switch for direct recording

It's amusing to hear people complaining about this pedal. "I can't adjust the ramp speed!"... "There's no slow speed control!"... "It doesn't even have a blend knob!" HONESTLY?!?! Have you ever even SEEN let alone USED an actual Leslie?!?! They don't have ANY of those things!! Do you people also complain you can't get fuzz tones out of your Tube Screamer?! Are you upset that your Epiphone Casino feeds back whenever you use it in your Metal band?!?! This pedal was designed to replicate the sound you get when plugging your guitar or keyboard into an actual Leslie Speaker/Amp combo, single or dual drum, and with the Tech21 speaker, amp, and mic sim technology, it does that better than any other pedal on the market. Sure, if you want ramp, blend, and slow speed controls to get a variety of OTHER sounds, go get something else... but if it's the sound of running right into a vintage Leslie cabinet and amp that you're after, THIS is the go-to device! I have one last in my chain on my board and use it a LOT... and it gives me EXACTLY what I was looking for... the sound of running my guitar through a Leslie!! It will stay there until someone makes a better one, or I can afford two roadies to lug around real ones... neither of which has yet happened!! In the meantime, I'll leave all the uninformed Complainy-Pants' to keep crying that there's no way to switch tubes and speakers on their Marshall-in-a-box-pedal!

After listening to sound clips on youtube I was expecting much more from this. Maybe it sounds great in stereo but in mono it sounds thin and buzzy. I've tried every setting in the book and duplicated settings I saw online and mine sounds nothing like that. Also, there is a big volume cut with this thing. If you up the volume, gain or EQ to bring the volume up to unity it sounds dirty. I was hoping this would replace my Boss RT-20 because of the size but this is just not going to happen.
Additionally there are missing features. No ramp control, no slow speed control, no LED that indicating if it is speeding up or slowing down, no mix control.....overall very dissapointing product.

Comments about Tech 21 Roto Choir Guitar Effects Pedal:

This unit has a very versatile assortment of controls, and some very nice sounds. Unfortunately, it also has an assortment of unwanted sounds, including a regular, loud, "pop" and a bizarre swirling growl. The first one I received was DOA, the second with these noise issues. It will have to go back and I am finished with it.

Comments about Tech 21 Roto Choir Guitar Effects Pedal:

Granted, Leslie mojo is difficult to simulate. I've had this for a couple weeks now, and I can't find many settings I really like. This is my second pedal, the first one was DOA, and musicians friend exchanged it smoothly.

I'd prefer the drum and horn speeds be configurable, not just "fast" and "slow". Slow seems too slow. Also, ramp time is not configurable. And it needs a "mix" knob to blend the dry signal.

Where this pedal performs (I can't say "shines") is in the sansamp leslie modeling. It's one thing to have leslie-like guitar sounds, and quite another to have your guitar sound like a leslie cabinet. This pedal attempts to do both. I haven't yet compared other pedals, so can't say if anyone does it better, but overall this one's going back. I have the Boss RT-20 on the way. The answer is probably Lex or Neo, but I can't afford the Neo, and the Lex sounds a bit shrill in youtube demos.

Maybe it's not possible with a pedal of this complexity, but I'd prefer something that sounds decent-to-good in most positions. The RotoChoir is the opposite of that, sounding fair in few positions, and terrible in many.

        Roto Pedals

        By Bill Beck

        from Chicago 'burbs

Comments about Tech 21 Roto Choir Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've tried most of them, and after using the Rotochoir, I returned it and went back to a Boss RT-20 which I've owned before. As far as the Rotochoir goes, I didn't like the fact that you can't alter the speed of the low "rotor", and I like having indicator lights that flucuate with the corresponding speed that the pedal is currently at- fast or slow. On a loud stage sometimes it's hard to hear where you are at.

This thing is cool. Don't know why everyone has issues with this pedal, works great with some tweeking and it being in the proper sequence of your pedals. I use it thru the effects loop of my amp and wow. Sure beats carrying a leslie.

Comments about Tech 21 Roto Choir Guitar Effects Pedal:

Enjoying this, but I'm not in love yet. It does add nice swirl to my POG2 organ setting. Sounds best on Slow rotor setting. Will experiment with stereo out recording later. Use now in live situation to help cover some keyboard parts, 80's classic rock.
Wish it had a few memory presets for live flexibility.
-Slow/Fast switch needs an indicator light.
I'll experiment more, then decide to keep or send back. Worth your time to experiment, test your own results.

I was a bit miffed with the lack of a few items on this.Others on the market at least have an LED for the Speed. Also I miss the "Brake" switch. I was hoping to use this inplace of my Strymon Lex or my H & K Rotoshpere Mk. II.
I tried it out at home and as well during our bands 2 hour show. I sent it back as soon as I could.

        Excellent!
My Roto Choir, like my Liverpool, totally cop the vibe I was looking for. It would be great to have a real Leslie, but to throw a pedal in my bag and get 80% of the vibe... I'm good.

        You can trust Tech21.
