Comments about Trace Elliot TA 100 100W 2x5 Stereo Acoustic Combo:
A++! Better than anything I've played before. Period. My style: acoustic rock. The built in soft knee compression is transparent (and you can select the level of compression). Preamps have very low noise. The amp sounds nearly reference-amp-like with a flat EQ. The crisp sound of the Neodynium speakers, along with feather weight are an absolute pleasure. But the best item on this amp: the 6 band graphic EQ on the master. I can set up the amp for a tailored sound. The back has plenty of options for send, returns, and DI outs.
The only goofy thing: the second channel XLR requires the cable shield to be tied into not only pin 1, but also the jack shield (yes the metallic male piece that gets inserted into the amp's female receptacle). After reviewing the schematic with a local tech, it seems Trace has come up with a novel mono-stereo-XLR-all-in-one-plug that allegedly reduces noise and maximizes flexibility for stereo rigs (can you really get stereo effect from two small speakers 3 inches apart?). But no bother, this amp is well worth one design oddity.
For acoustic acts doing easy listening, light rock, country, and classical, I'd put the price-to-value setting at about $550. Of course you'll want to uplink to a bigger PA in larger venues, but this amp seems reasonable for most 100 person or less venues.
