OVERVIEW

The six-watt Special 6 guitar combo amp gets its powerful tube sound from one 12AX7 preamp tube and one 6V6 output tube, with a 10" VHT High-Sensitivity speaker. It boasts a footswitchable Gain Boost feature that significantly expands its range of tones-it's the only amp in its class that excels at both clean and overdriven tones, and it's the only amp in its class to offer a footswitchable boost. With the Gain Boost, players can instantly toggle between clean rhythm tones and overdriven leads, essentially duplicating the footswitchable functions of a 2-channel amp in an all-tube, hand-wired, simple, 2-knob combo.

To further expand its range of tones, the Special 6 combo also features a High/Low power switch that enhances low-volume tones with extra-smooth richness (when in half-power mode). It's a great feature for recording, or for low-volume "bedroom" players. In high-power mode, it's one of the few amps in its class that is loud enough to compete with a strong drummer.

The mod-friendly VHT Special 6 guitar combo amp is easy to customize for home amp builders and tube-amp enthusiasts.

Hand-wired tube goodness, unique features, and unparalleled value.

I wanted the purest, truest, simplest yet full-fledged tube tone I could find for recording, guitar evaluation, and playing in general - without breaking the bank. This li'l guy, IMHO, delivers on all counts.

You can do just about anything with it. High/Low power, boost On/Off, and HI/LOW inputs give you 8 combinations over which to vary the Volume and Tone controls. Speaker outs let you make it sound big. Mic-ing to a PA even bigger. Takes pedals well for pretty much any style of music.

So far, so good, and I wanted 'hand-wired' not so much for mods, but for easy repair if ever needed. The easiest 'mod', of course, would be to change out the 6V6 tube with an EL84 using the available adapter for a variation in the amp's character.

The 10" speaker gives it a solid, focused sound that I would be hard-pressed to improve upon. The movement of air I think is important, as direct-in and modeling just don't cut it for me. And you'd be surprised the tonal variations that mic placement can make.

This li'l guy is a winner. And a steal. And probably offered as such by the company as an introduction to its products, which I would give serious consideration to if I ever needed to look at something bigger.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

When I first purchased this amp it sounded a little harsh so I took others advice and replaced the tubes.
Then it sounded a bit better, but still a little brittle. Now that the speaker is fully broken in it sounds good. I also recently bought a TRRI and decided tonight to plug the internal Jensen speakers into the 8ohm output on the VHT. This amp breathes with life and is very loud with the two 12's. You could even use this to gig with if you had an external cab. Does it sound better than the TRRI? In my opinion they both sound different, but on the same level. The TRRI is glassy, transparent, and cleaner( obviously with the higher wattage headroom). The VHT is warmer, fatter, and dirtier. Depends on what you are playing.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I'd been using a solid state, but I was just getting really unimpressed with the tone and wanted to switch to tubes. I wanted a good and simple tube amp to play in my two bedroom apartment without disturbing the neighbors or waking up my baby. There are enough options in this amp to deliver a good range of tone and volume, and it handles overdrive pedals really well for when you want to play dirty. The boost pedal is also a really sweet plus, though you have to crank the volume to really get it working. I also like that I can plug it into a speaker cab for more volume with the input jacks in the back of the amp. If you're on a tight budget, like me, and you want a portable, easy-to-store, low-to-mid volume amp, get this one.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

After 19 years of playing guitar I finally made the switch to a tube amp and could not be happier! I bought a Fender hybrid half-stack early on and have used that for a very long time. I was originally just looking to switch to a smaller amp. I played a lot of the modeling amps like the Mustangs and Valvetronixes but they sounded a bit flat/uninspiring. I thought tube amps seemed too expensive but this is a gem, especially for the price.

I think you have to be an experienced player to hear and feel the difference a tube amp makes. You can really hear every nuance in your playing and it forces you to be more disciplined.

The Special 6 is a perfect option for me because it is pretty small but can still get plenty loud for household use. It sounds really great, well balanced but very slightly on the dark side. The reason I chose this over a Bugera or Vox is the circuit board is made to be hacker friendly and there are a lot of mods documented online. (I am also an electronics geek.)

If you are looking to define a signature sound I think you need to get a tube amp. This is a great one if you don't want to shell out too much money. The speaker and tubes are easily upgradable, and there are a lot of mods, so if you are into it you can really customize this to your liking.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Great value for a modest price. Has great tube tone, with dynamics and complexity that hold up with similar low-wattage amps that can cost 3 times as much. Purchased two of these; I now have a true stereo guitar amp set-up that makes my stereo effects stomp boxes sound great. Turned up all the way, this amp has modest break-up, but it takes distortion pedals really well. Easy to modify the tubes. I replaced the 6V6 tubes and put in EL84s using VHT's adapter. Gives me a warm, blackface sound. Love these amps!

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

My first foray into tube amps was a Traynor YCV40. It was too loud, so I figured I'd get something lower wattage and maybe with a little more of a vintage tone, so I bought a Vox AC30. Yeah, that was still way too loud. Anyway, while I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the Vox I purchased this little guy to use at home for practice. HOLY COW. I sold the Vox, and I use this as my main amp now. It sounds incredible! The tone stack on the tone knob is REALLY useful, and there's more clean room here than you think. It gets PLENTY loud for nearly any gig I could ever play; I always play with a PA system, so I don't see why I would ever need something louder. I play my USA made G&L Legacy Special (strat style guitar) and my Ibanez AS93 (es335 copy) into this puppy, and it SINGS. Great tone, very fenderish, but with the right settings and pedals you can cover vox and marshall territory as well. Even if I wind up adding more amps to the stable some day, this sucker is staying.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

Wow! This little amp is a monster! I am a harmonica player in a full-on blues-rock-jam band and this little beauty sounds great live. I initially purchased it because I was looking for a smaller more portable amp to use in some of the smaller venues I play instead of lugging around my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. The VHT has been brilliant. I turn the Tone knob up to half, the volume to 3/4 and then I mic the amp. I add several harmonica pedals for effects and the sound is AWESOME! It has that gritty nasty Chicago blues tone so many harp players want and when I want a more in your face Rock tone, I can get that with a simple click of one of my pedals.

I also recently played the VHT at a duet gig with my guitar buddy and it sounded equally as great. I just turned the tone knob up a little more and the volume knob down a little, mic'd it and what a sound.

The one modification I made was to swap out the factory installed Chinese tube for a nice Groove Tube, which was very easy to do.

The unit is small and very portable, it looks sharp, it is solidly built and the 6 watts of power is perfect for harp playing. It can easily hook up to a bigger cabinet if you wish via the 3 1/4inch jacks in the back of varying ohm ratings, but I found that I preferred hearing my harp directly through the factory speaker. More is not always better. I also love the simple design. The VHT has one Tone knob and one Volume knob which are very easy to manipulate. If I want more variety in my sound, I use my pedals. I like the Stand By switch during set breaks and I also appreciate the Hi and Lo jacks which allow me to play at louder volumes for band gigs and lower volumes for practice in the home.

Even my band mates were impressed. Honestly, they were blown away by my tone and the power of this little baby. I have not found this kind of tone in amplifiers 2 and 3 times the price. For the price, it is a steal. Get one.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W 1x10 Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Combo Amp:

I love this amp. It is incredibly versatile, even with only two knobs. I am amazed by the amount of different tones I find with this amplifier. It has a high power and low power switch that not only quiets the amp down but changes its characteristics (darker on low) which gives this amp even more tonal variation. The boost push/pull volume is significant and can produce some pretty great distortion and volume. It takes pedals really well and my original RAT never sounded better(note: looping pedals get muddy because of the single 10" speaker). It is loud and even louder with an extension cab and records very well. There is some slight noise, but hey, it's a tube amp and I've never owned one that didn't make some sort of noise. It will be loud enough for gigs, but may need micing with a drummer. Cheap tube replacement (2 tubes) if you want/need them. And to top it all off, you can play around with different 12ax7's and get an adapter to install an EL84 in the power section. Easily modded. What the hecklebeans! This amp is my new favorite tool. Musicians Friend honored a freshly expired sale for me and got it here quicker than expected. Great service all around.
