OVERVIEW

Hand-wired tube goodness, unique features, and unparalleled value.

The six-watt Special 6 guitar amp head gets its powerful tube sound from one 12AX7 preamp tube and one 6V6 output tube. It boasts a footswitchable Gain Boost feature that significantly expands its range of tones-it's the only amp in its class that excels at both clean and overdriven tones, and it's the only amp in its class to offer a footswitchable boost. With the Gain Boost, players can instantly toggle between clean rhythm tones and overdriven leads, essentially duplicating the footswitchable functions of a 2-channel amp in an all-tube, hand-wired, simple, 2-knob package.

To further expand its range of tones, the Special 6 also features a High/Low power switch that enhances low-volume tones with extra-smooth richness (when in half-power mode). It's a great feature for recording, or for low-volume "bedroom" players. In high-power mode, it's one of the few amps in its class that is loud enough to compete with a strong drummer.

The mod-friendly VHT Special 6 guitar amp head is easy to customize for home amp builders and tube-amp enthusiasts.

I've had a whole bunch of amps over the years. Marshall, Fender, Gibson, Goldtone, Matchless, Holland, Dr. Z, Ampeg, Acoustic, Sears, Wards, Musicman, Mesa Boogie, Frenzel, you name it. This little amp ranks right up there in tone and build quality with the best of them. A little scary, because now they've figured out how to build boutique type amps on the cheap in China.

The clean is dream and the scream is mean. This amp cooks. I don't really care much for the low power setting. If I want scream I crank it and if I want clean I dial it back. I've never been a fan of low power switches, and still am not.

I've heard people complain of the cheap Chinese tubes. So, I got out my box of tubes and experimented with RCA, Sylvania, GE, Sovtek; I even tried a Mullard 12AU7A that I have. They all sounded pretty good, but I have to say, I like the Chinese tubes. In fact, I'm going to buy a bunch of them to have on hand... I like them that much.

Also, I know this amp is touted as a tweakers dream, but I have no desire to mod anything. It's perfect, as is. Maybe not quite loud enough to play with a drummer, but loud enough for your wife to complain. Probably might get a few complaints if you live in an apartment as well.

Highly recommended!

After reading the reviews, I decided to purchase this with the matching 1X12 speaker cabinet. Sound was muddy. No matter what, could not coax more than at best, minimal overdrive tube breakup. I used my ts9 deluxe tube screamer, Vox Wah and Boss CS3 with disappointing results.
So, off it went back, to the tune of 77$ UPS shipping. Build quality OK. The component quality is cheap electronics...An expensive lesson in you never get more than what you pay for.

amazing amp, amazing price

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Looking for a low wattage amp that sounds great, is built with quality, easy to modify, versatile, good for recording and even live playing? look no further.
True handwired amp, footswitchable boost, two power settings, high and low inputs... for a low powered amp I really couldn't ask for more. The tone knob gives a nice range from bassy to biting and clear, and you can plug this into any cab you want. I chose the vht special 6 open back 1X12 cabinet because of the celestion G12H-30 speaker, which is my favorite. Also, this may only be 6 watts, but on the high power setting this thing is loud enough to jam with other people and even play small gigs, especially if you can mic the amp and run it through the house PA.
Made in china, however... it is a better sounding, and better built amp than the fender champion 600, marshall class 5... etc. none of these are handwired and cost way too much for what you get, in my opinion.
as the title says, you cannot simply buy a better sounding low powered amp for the money.

Wonderful sounding amp head. In my opinion this amp with a 2-12 or 1-12 bottom can be used for small to medium venues miked to a good PA system. I really enjoy the way in which this amp head starts sustaining at lower volumes. This amp is worth a look at to see if it meets your playing style and needs. Boutique quality at a very reasonable price!

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I own professional amps to gig with, but i needed an amp for home use, that I could use at low level with an acceptable sound.
This amp is exactly what i needed. Nice warm sound, nice boost, takes pedals very well. I changed the stock amp tube for a jj 6l6: more head room. The amp reacts very well with the guitar volume control. I use it with a 1x12 cab with a Celestion Vintage 30 and a 1x12 Orange. This amp could be used for small venues with the right cab. It will not do metal but a surprising set of vintage sounds without any pedals. Add pedals and you are all set. Nice practice and small venue amp overall, you cannot beat the price for a well constructed hand wired amp. Yes it is made in China but it as good or better than most of low wattage boutique amps made in the USA.

The best value in an all tube hand wired amp head

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

Beautiful clean sound. Plenty of head room to front end with pedals. In low power mode slammed all the way to 10 it breaks up beautifully without shattering the windows. Great tube tone. The clean may be a little warmer than I was thinking, but I would buy it all over again.
Needs more tone control, but it is built to be simple. The tone knob is very effective, I would just personally like at least low and high knobs.
Very well built. It should last years.
Best value for the money in a hand wired all tube amp head.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

I bought this for live/recording use with my 3 piece band. VHT takes pains to point out that this amp can keep up with "a strong drummer", and since I tend to favor a slightly overdriven sound I decided to give it a shot.

      The good:

Solid basic tone. Very blackface Fender-ish. It actually reminds me a lot of my 1966 Bassman head (also has a solid state rectifier), but minus the low end grunt. Chords have a glassy "kraaang" and at higher volumes you get some tube compression happening.

As advertised it gets pretty loud for 6 watts. Through my old Carvin open back 4x10 it's loud enough for live use. I eventually want to try a more efficient speaker/cab for a little more clean headroom.

Seems well built and looks pretty good. The tolex is neatly done, real metal jacks and switches, etc... I like that VHT didn't try to make this amp too "vintage" looking.

      The not-so good:

Low Power mode - Since there is no master volume it's not possible to get the same overdriven sounds out of the amp in low power mode. This could be good if you're recording funk or reggae rhythm tracks and need the extra clean I guess, but nobody really needs clean at bedroom levels.

Boost mode - It sounds pretty harsh and at lower volume settings is a really big jump. Since there is no way to adjust the level or character of the boost it is what it is, and to me it is useless. The footswitch is also cheap and hardwired at the switch end.

Low end - This should not come as a shock to anyone, but the bass suffers when the amp is cranked. With humbuckers it can be downright murky.

Noise - for what it costs it's not reasonable to expect a miracle in this area, but it's still noisier than I'd like.

      Bottom Line:

It's pretty impressive for the money. It would be better without the low power and boost. Eliminating that stuff and enabling the option to install a tube rectifier (for lower volume and "sag") would have been a better design choice.

I have use this amp in the past and it was a great sounding amp.

My guess is the one star guy didn't know how to operate an amp - much less a tube amplifier - or had other problems with his rig.

This little amp get positive reviews everywhere I look - some people just gotta be haters.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

VHT head is plugged into a 16 ohm 12" cabinet; used for small rehearsals and home recordings. Mostly classic rock and Americana type music. This 6W amp produces 'delicious' Fender tones with balanced lows where the sound is not 'thin'; they got the frequency 'scoop' dialed in just right (better than a Fender Champion 600) with the EQ filter resistors/capacitors after the 1st gain stage. The boost is very useful (gets you from clean to breakup very nicely) for leads or heavy rythm parts.
Having 4, 8 and 16 ohm speaker outs and the Pentode to Triode operation (Hi to Low Power switch) adds to the versatility of this amp head. The output transformer is quite massive for a 6W unit (this is good). It may be able to support a 6L6 tube (with a lower value cathode bias resistor) providing more 'clean' headroom.
Finally, i definitely agree that this guitar amp begs to be modified; it does not use a Printed Circuit board wich helps in keeping circuit mods simple.
I definitely recommend this 6W unit especially for a ~$200 price.

It probably just didn't mate well with whatever pickups you were using. And it's suppose to be a tweaker's amp, so you just swap in a few different tubes to change up the tone. And those pedals you were using would definitely not be my first choice for an amp like this.

I took it over to my buddy's house to give it a whirl on his 4x12 cabinet. First strum we looked at each other in amazement. We couldn't believe this was 6w. Never turned it past 3 due to neighbors. Great little amp, great tone

Incredible sound from this all tube amp. There is no better sound than from a tube amp, and this one specifically has been well designed and built. It's perfect for practicing in a room with other players or just playing alone. In addition to playing this amp cleanly, I also use an effects pedal which still allows the tube tone to come through. I really can't say enough good things about this amp. I have wired it to several different speakers, and the tone sounds great from every one of them. It's not going blow the doors off the house; that's not the right application. But if you want the best tone, portable package, and a great price, then this is your amp.

Great Class A Tone. Wasn't sure of this one one when I first got it, it didn't sound bad but I thought it was lacking a little in the tone department. Then a few days later I dimed it and tried hitting the input stage a little harder with some preamp gain... what a difference, the amp came alive and sounds great. This baby likes to run wide open. Don't let the simple controls scare you away, the various combinations of high/low inputs, high/low power, tone, and volume provide a surprising variety of great tones. Very touch responsive, it can go from clean to dirty just by using pick attack. Amazing head for the price.

Comments about VHT Special 6 6W Hand-Wired Tube Guitar Amp Head:

The clean sound that I can use to adust my guitar or effects pedals are great. The warm up is perfect. The range of sounds whether I change speakers or adustments is outstanding.
