Comments about Vox Custom AC4C1 4W 1x10 Tube Guitar Combo:

I am a worship guitarist and have had to play through a Vox Tonelab directly to the church's PA system. I have wanted a small tube amp to mic without making the sound folks mad.

Just received this for Christmas from my wife, and I have to thank her profusely. This amp is really all you need for your home. I have owned a Marshall JCM 800 50 watt 2x12 combo, a Peavey Classic 50 2x12 (tweed), and a Fender Silverfaced Bassman 410, and while each of them sound absolutely gorgeous, they were just too much for the house.

I was surprised how loud it can get, but also surprised at how great a tone I could achieve at low volume. It will get into a very nice grind at moderate volumes. I have read many reviews complaining about the lack of headroom, but I did not find this to be the case. There is plenty of clean in there, and if mic'ed properly, I think it would sound very good through a good PA system. So far I have only tried it with a TC Hall of fame reverb, and that really helps it to sound big and full, despite the smallish 10" speaker. Without reverb, it can sound a tad boxy, but not as bad as other small amps I've tried.

The treble and bass controls seem to affect each other quite a bit, and if they are turned too far in extreme from each other, they seem to cancel each other out and bring back in the midrange. In other words, don't expect a big bassy sound to exist if you turn down all the treble and crank the bass or vice versa.

The best sound I have got from it was with the bass at about 2 o'clock and the treble at about 11 o'clock. gain at about 9 o'clock and volume pegged. That is very close to clean, and you can really change the sound with your guitar's volume.

The only thing I would add to it to make it the perfect amp is an on-board reverb and a true line out. But don't let that keep you from getting one, with a pedal and a microphone, this is capable of meeting all of your small venue needs.
