Most people think they’ve never heard of Brent Mason. Although you may not recognize the name, chances are you've heard him. Brent is, without doubt, the number 1 session musician working out of Nashville and has been since the early 1990’s.
If you have seen ‘Friends’, ‘Bridget Jones Diary’ or ‘Becker’… Or listened to Shania Twain, Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson, George Strait or any other of the hundreds of artists that call Brent first when they need a guitar player on their recording, you’ve heard him. It’s getting to the point now where Brent is probably one of the most recorded guitar players in history.
Not only is he a now a legendary studio figure, but also a renowned composer and songwriter. His compositions have been used in countless films, TV shows and commercials. His solo albums, in particular “Hot Wired” (from which this pedal got its name) has become almost mythical in its reputation for guitar tone and quality of musicianship.
Built on the foundations of Hot Wired Version 1, The Brent Mason Hot Wired Signature Overdrive/Distortion Version 2 stands alone in terms of versatility. The studio scene in Nashville has changed over the last few years, so Hot Wired changed to mirror the industry Brent works in. Version 1 was geared towards all out chickin' pickin' and beyond . Version 2 brings you a broader range of subtlety in channel 1 that mirrors Brent's work today. You can still find the chickin' pickin' tones, but you can also find a deeper, warmer overdrive section that will allow you to play as smooth as you like. With the added blend control, you won't believe how fat your tone can be without it sounding too overdriven. Channel 2 still has the same "Plexi" flavor that Brent loves.
Two pedals in one (overdrive and distortion), this is without doubt one of the most versatile pedals available today. One channel has all your overdrive needs, from a gentle break up to all out crunch, the other gives you dirt, loads of fat, creamy distortion that is tonally perfect from top to bottom. If need be you can stack them both together for a huge, huge sound.
When it has Brent’s name on it, you know it’s nothing short of perfect.

For all varieties of indie-rock, blues, classic rock, country, fusion and even hard-rock (the ACDC, Motley Crue area), it seems like Wampler's where it's at right now.
Probably a little bit better when used with single-coils, P90s and mini-humbuckers, the Hot Wired v2 gives you both excellent lead tones and solid rhythm tones, that work really well regardless of your favorite/favored amp settings (hipster and mod, shoegazin mop-headed mid-boosted-frowny-faced kids, country-pickin and bluesy riffin flat-and-stiff-lipped gentlemen or who'dat windmillin, grinnin and rollin all scooped-and-smiley-facin?).
On the right (where I think this thing really excels), it gives you a smooth and creamy, very natural, universal sort of overdrive with a wonderful, two-days-later-and-it's-still-ringing sustain. If I had to compare it to another overdrive, I'd have to go with Carl Martin, but it doesn't color your tone as much (and that's saying truck-loads)...this OD just sounds like whatever amp, whatever guitar I'm using, as if I were plugged directly into the amp, cranked to ten or eleven or twelve (depending), only with more control and less volume (if you really want less volume). In addition, you have a very useful blend control, which takes you into something like Sparkle Drive territory, but rather than the two-amp feel that the Voodoo do, it's more cohesive, like you're bringing clarity back in, not cleanliness (if that makes any sense). Then, you also have the "Normal, Fat, Fatter" switch. At low volumes, you probably won't be able to tell the difference between these three settings, but at club-gigging levels, it's extremely useful. It gives my P90s and miniHBs a very full, almost PAF flavor, which is very useful, not to mention musical.
Then, on the left, you've got everything again but the blend, and the "distortion" (rather than OD on this side) is voiced with more bite and more saturation. In fact, it sounds a little like the "classic" "Class A" tube-amp distortion (think the traditional distorted Marshall, Vox, Orange or TopHat). Basically, it's a lot like the left-side OD, just a bit brighter and a bit tighter with just, to put it plainly-and-simply, more of everything on tap.
My only criticism sits squarely on the volume control. Gain and dirt boxes that I've used since the whole "boutique" thing happened, have just been impossible when it comes to getting more without getting a lot more on the volume end of the spectrum. It'd be nice if I could get a smoother pot taper out of this box...you know, be able to set the volume where I want it without too much fussing and mucking about, but I guess that's just beneath "premium" pedal makers...also, the extreme amount of gain on tap, and all these "boutique" pedals are like 10-20dB boost pedals with OD/Disto/Fuzz circuits, makes volume control cumbersome to work out...but then again, the whole point of a dirt box is the saturation of a cranked-up tube amp, with more control, so...hmmm...I think you know where I'm going...
