A compression pedal that won't hurt your tone or your ego.

A lot of people say “I don’t want to squash my tone and remove all of my playing expression”, which is a fair point if you have a lower quality compressor or it’s not set up properly, but a quick look at professional guitar players rigs and most of them will have compression in it, so, that would lead you to believe that compression is actually imperative to a lot of players.

So, what does it do..? Fundamentally, it adds an element of control to your playing level – it will bring the quieter parts up and the louder parts down. A great tube amp when driven into its sweet spot will do this, a compressor can bring you that control but a great compressor will give you that feel as well. Many budget compressors give you the squash and squeeze of a driven amp, but you tend to lose all of your playing dynamics, all of your expression.

The Ego Compressor will take that element of squash and squeeze, but will allow you to be able to control the effect so that your playing can shine through. It has been said before that the mark of a great compressor is that you can forget you have it on.

When Brian at Wampler designed this pedal, the word that kept coming back to him was “transparency”. The way the Ego has been designed, there is no coloration of your sound. The tone and blend controls allow you to balance the effect in such a way your signal path sounds so pure when the reality is that the pedal is working extra hard to make your playing tick like clockwork.

Now, if you are not familiar with the Ego Compressor, you will probably be thinking “What’s a blend control?”. The blend is a dry mix, that sweeps between a fully effected signal to zero effect across the sweep of the pot. There will be a point in that sweep that allows you all the compression you need to even out your playing, increase your sustain (if you want it) but without any detraction from you playing attack and feel. That, previously was just a dream, but now; that is a reality. When this amazingly simple yet devastatingly effective control is added with the tone control (that can add a little sparkle to the tone), when this pedal is used as “an effect” rather than as an “always on” (to control your solos or to fatten up your rhythms), a little extra bit of sparkle allows your guitar to sit in that place in the band mix that you have been trying to fit into but couldn’t quite find. Just a littler higher, a little sweeter in the mix.

This is the effect that you probably didn’t realize you needed, but once you have used once, cannot imagine living without.

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I play modern country, and this comp gives me the squeeze my guitars need. I mean, if guys like Brad Paisley, Keith Urban, and Brent Mason use 'em, they gotta be doing something right? LoL. The blend knob is killer, and you can really dial in what kind of compressed tone you're looking for. This pedal is almost always on when it's plugged-in.

I play clean and bought this to add sustain without changing my tone. Even with the sustain and blend on full, no sustain at all and even with blend down low it screwed up my tone. It did nothing it said it would.

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I bought the EGO going on the recommendation of a fellow musician and friend...excellent quality, very transparent compressor. Also, Wampler Pedals are known for being "top shelf." This is the best compressor for guitar that I have owned in my 32 years of performing. IMHO, the "blend" control is what makes this pedal...dial in just enough of what you need, dry and compressed...and again, very transparent. Yes, it's a bit pricey, BUT, for me, good tone is worth it.

I purchased this item on recommendation.
This pedal Increased my high end on guitar.
There is a tone control on the pedal, but was not responsive.
I sent it back and bought another Boss compression pedal.

This was the biggest let down compressor, I was so excited to receive it and it really let me down. No thank you Wampler I will try another brand less expensive. For 200 this should be heaven to plug into but it was extremely noisy and really never blew me away. All my other pedals are quite but this thing is terrible. Who are they kidding a compressor is so suppose to improve your sound not detract from it. Wow my fuzz pedals are more quite than this thing. I will buy an empress compressor instead at least I know the quality is much better.

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

i bought this pedal over the keeley 4 knob due to the blend and tone knobs on the ego. most compressors kill my attack and darken my sound. these two knobs solved that problem. you can set the blend to add back in your uncompressed signal and it works together with the compressed signal to get your full attack. the two signals blend seamlessly.
the tone knob adds in some top end sparkle to override the squashed darkness.
i have this pedal in front of my 6505+. the volume on this pedal is endless, and i have it turned up quite a bit to drive my tubes crazy. it adds a ton of warmth if you want it to, or you can just leave it at your normal guitar level. my lead lines sound much better with each note ringing in at the same volume. it makes arpeggios and single note runs very even and pleasant.
i have not tried this pedal for country, i play modern metal and am very serious about my sound. it produces a very clean, highly tweakable compressed signal. extremely happy with this investment.

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

Let's get this out of the way first: I'm a HUGE MXR fanboy--I absolutely LOVE their pedals for their analog sound and reliability. I've tried a MXR Supercomp, Dynacomp (block logo) and finally settled on the Custom Comp. The MXR CC is great in its own right: it's not nearly as noisy as its predecessors but the internal controls ARE A P.I.T.A to get to should you want to tweak.

After reading several reviews I decided to pull the trigger and buy an Ego Compressor--my last compressor. I can't imagine owning another compressor without the BLEND and ATTACK controls on the face. As so many others have said, the BLEND knob is the 'magic' of this pedal. You can dial in virtually any sound. Furthermore, it's so quiet (more so than anything else I've tried) I literally don't know it's on unless I turn it off. It's hands-down the most transparent compressor I've ever used. It's quite easy to go from a country chicken-picken sound to a smooth sustain. I play mostly hard rock (but not metal) and I also often times use clean tones and fingerpick. This pedal balances the volume nicely without a drop in volume, without adding noise, and without coloring my tone. I couldn't be happier.

On a side note, I was unable to figure out on my own the control of the ATTACK knob (even after reading the instructions). I wasn't sure if full clockwise was a fast or slow attack. After using the pedal I can say with certainty rotating the ATTACK knob full clockwise makes for a very fast and clicky attack good for country. Counter clockwise makes for a slower attack allowing your picking dynamics to sound through--good for hard rock/metal.

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

The Wampler Ego Compressor is a great transparent compressor. I have used a Dyna Comp for the past couple years and had been satisfied with my tone, but the EGO just sounds so much better.

I played the Ego side by side with a Keeley 4 knob and to my ears the Wampler sounded better. The Keeley is a great compressor, but it colored my tone, while the Wampler was transparent.

The Wampler is extremely versatile. You can go from very subtle to full on chicken picken. The blend knob is a great feature that lets you blend in your uncompressed signal with the compressed signal.

This is the third Wampler pedal I have purchased recently. I am very satisfied with the sounds and overall quality of Mr. Wampler's pedals.

Comments about Wampler Ego Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal:

I've owned a lot of compressors/limiters/line-boosters over the years (all the usual suspects plus quite a few "boutique" choices). Some of them even sound as good as the Ego at a couple of things, but none of them sound as good as the Ego at everything. Literally, it works well as all three, and at any two-part combination: comp/boost, limit/boost, comp, boost or limit. It's also very quiet and very transparent (unlike DynaComps, CS-2/-3s, Doublebacks, etc.) The blend/mix control also works extremely well. Your uneffected signal can be added back into the overall output (you read right, added in, not mixed in). So, if you like using your comp after your dirt rather than before it, and if you like the idea of driving your pre-amp tubes hot, into sweet, natural-breakup territory, this little ego-maniac does that too. For live in-the-pedalboard applications, Ego's #1.

Overall, comp/limit-wise though, my #1 choice is the MarkBass Compressore, followed by the Wampler Ego in the number two spot, the Diamond CPR-1 in third and the Mad Professor Forest Green in fourth. (Four on the floor.)
