I have the original MagicStomp, and have had it for about 2 years now. I definately stands up to a beating, and keeps performing. The editing software kicks ass - you can basically re-create any guitar / amp / combo sound you have ever heard, and create some new ones as well. Not sure what upgrades the MagicStomp II offers, but some suggestions / warnings about the old one...1) There is about a 1 to 2 second delay when you switch from one effect to another. I bought a volume / compression pedal to use on my leads, and solos. That way I can use one distortion, and just boost the volume on it. 2) This sounds, and works a lot better (with my Peavey XXL amp) when I use it through the front input, rather than the effects loop. Anyway, I have always thought Boss had the best pedals, but the MagicStomp has given me a new outlook on all that. You would have to buy the whole Boss catalog of pedals @ $100 + per pedal to compete with what you can do on this $80 Yamaha!! It's a no-brainer!!

While the factory presets are exaggerated demos, that's true of every multieffect unit I've ever heard. The real problem is that, incredibly, you cannot program new patches from scratch, but only modify the existing ones, and only to very limited extents. Adding or completely removing effects from these patches is usually not possible, even with the software! This is an unbelievably lame way of rigging a device with the Magicstop's wide range of effects, and apparently explains its unpopularity and subsequent demise.

    Simply Awesome

    By Audie

I Love it. I am only getting started into guitar, but having been doing the midi and computer musick stuff so long, this unit is a dream for the guitar and a mod freak. It seems to have no end of an ability to be tweaked and though the Yamaha guys didi not do so well at supporting this unit with their web site, I am still thrilled with it as I can do my own tweaking. I was able to get all the sounds I wanted and still more. THe ability to tweak a set and save it, then tweak some more and move the sets back and forth from the pc make this a sound modder's dream package. For playing it has the limitation of having only the three switches, but set up right with some fore thought that can be enough. It has a headphone jack so you do not need your amp for practice and the signal can be sent out to anything. For the price, get this multi-switch. It can be daisy chained and will always be useful.

    One Great Effects Processor

    By Adam-mBXV7

    from Cleveland,OH

I bought this about a year ago and it truly is a great buy. you can edit the effects that come with it or update patches from the site. The toneis great, but there's no expression pedal like most processors have, so if you want to get expressionate just go get a wah pedal and run the effect processor through it, the magic stomp is virtually glitch free...great buy!!!!!

    Excellent!

    By HarpDoc

At this price, this thing is amazing. The reverbs and delays are outstanding. I'm using one for live vocals and one for harp effects. I especially appreciate the anti-feedback feature for harp. I have a Magicstomp 1 and this thing is so much better. The only limitation is that you cannot combine all effects as you'd like, but rather have to stick with the combos that they offer. Nevertheless, excellent quality!

Does some things well, others poorly - good value

    By Guitarzan-xIpmB

Given the programmability of this as a high quality reverb/echo/chorus/compressor/eq I find it to be a surprisingly powerful tool in a strange little package for a very nice price. I was very disappointed with the guitar amp sims / distortions - so I don't use them. With a Tech 21 TriAC in front of the Magicstomp I am getting some great results for guitar, and this box is still a great value when used for only what it is good at. I don't like the presets, I think you need to learn to set it up yourself - however I find this true with most digital effects.

    Stomp ME

Ok... it's not true tube sound and it's not a Pod, but hook this sucker up to a tube amp and you will be blown away. The best thing to do is tweak it on your computer and then do your final adjustments through your amp. At this price, you can't go wrong. So, BUY IT BEFORE IT'S GONE

    Review

    By Vogtro

I wanted to love the Magicstomp, and I'd say the relationship is bitersweet. I must say that the real power in this unit lies in the editing function. I was not impressed with most of the factory patches, they seemed too processed sounding to me (especially the heavy distortions) but once you get into the editing program and work your magic the Magicstomp truly comes alive. The other is that patch switching is not instantaneous and has an aggravating delay. Perhaps Yamaha will produce a firmware update to fix this down the road. Overall this pedal is very good overall and gives you some good bang for your buck in a gig worthy box, if you can cope with a few minor annoyances.

    A winner!

At this price, you can't go wrong. Excellent sounds and a big improvement from the MSI (which I also have). Really nice to be able to edit from the unit without computer. Also, the new version has a very good feedback rejector, which is helpful when I blow harp through this thing.

    great piece!

    By sirflyguy

This is a great piece of gear, especially considering the price. The amp models (which is what I got it for - I need amp sounds directly input into a PA system while using no amp) are awesome, just like the DG Stomp's. Many who think they are thin or tinny need to make sure that the speaker simulator is engaged in each patch when you use it as a direct recording device or straight into a PA system. The effects are very nice and very musical. Not a better bargain to be had at the price. Heck, just get it for the SPX effects alone (or the DG, or the UD, or the AG Stomp effects). The onboard deep editing is much nicer than the old Magic Stomp, where you had to use a computer to do more than the preset edits allowed (and it didn't work very well). No computer needed for this one, although it still has that function available if needed.

A very good all in one box

    By Guitar Bum Drew-mxJjO

    from San Francisco

It doesn't have all the features of more expensive pedal processors, but what it does have is well worth double what you will pay for it. Straight out of the box it sounds great. The only thing I use with it is a Cry Baby wah pedal, and it sounds great for general use. I haven't bothered playing with the computer software, as there are enough choices already programmed into it. And tweaking the parameters is a simple task to anyone that has used an effects box before. If you have the money, just buy one. You can always sell it to a friend if you need the money for something else in the future. But I doubt you will sell it once you use it. The most important feature for me, for the price, is the headphone jack, now I can practice my guitar without having to put my guitar through a mixer. That alone is worth the price to me. As far as quality, if you gig every night in a rock band, it may wear out on you, but for home studio use, it will last you.
