OVERVIEW

Multi-effects processor with incredible sounds and countless combinations.

The G5n comes equipped with freshly-developed takes on not only the most-essential guitar sounds like overdrive, distortion, compression, EQ, delay, reverb, flanging, phasing, vibrato, and chorusing, but also unique multi-effects such as Seq Filter, Gold Drive, Reverse Delay, HD Hall, and OSC Echo.

Ultra-realistic amp/cabinet emulation
You can connect the G5n directly to a PA system or audio interface, using the 10 brand new onboard amp and cabinet emulators. Choose from 5 classic amp models like the Marshall JCM800, Fender Twin Reverb, MESA Boogie Mk3, Bogner Ecstasy Blue Channel and British 30W Class A Combo, newly and faithfully created to be adjusted exactly as you would with the knobs and switches of the real thing.

Pair your amp with one of the 5 newly-created cabinet emulators to complete the sound, choosing from Marshall 1960 A-type cabinet (4x12” Celestion speakers), Fender ’65 Twin Reverb (2x12” Jensen speakers), the UK2x12 that recreates the sound of early British combo amps (2x12” Celestion speakers), Mesa Boogie Mark III cab (1x12” Celestion Black Shadow speaker), or Bogner Ecstasy cabinet (4x12” Celestion speakers).

100 custom-crafted combinations and counting
To explore the wealth of possibilities that the G5n offers, Zoom continuously collaborate with inspirational, professional guitarists known for their taste and love of great guitar sounds. The G5n comes stocked with 100 newly custom-designed patches that both recreate decades of essential guitar tones—like the iconic sounds of Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana, Michael Schenker, and Brian May—and pioneer new territory with combinations exclusively created for G5n guitarists.

Stand out with "Lead BGN," a modern lead sound folded into a modulated delay, or "Phazed," an intense tube amp sound through a phaser. The "UFO" patch harnesses parametric EQ in the style of the lead guitarist of the band of the same name, and then there's "DreamLand," an overdriven crunch enhanced with tape echo and hall reverb.

With the free ZOOM Guitar Lab software, you can look for new effects and amp/cabinet emulators, as well as even more exclusive patches from the diverse and growing list of G5n creators, people like:

Kyle Bolden (Stevie Wonder)
Errol Cooney (Christina Aguilera, Stevie Wonder)
Andrew Elstner (Torche, Riddle of Steel)
Allen Epley (The Life and Times, Shiner)
Wes Geer (Korn, hed PE)
Adam Hawley (Joss Stone)
Chuck Loeb (Fourplay)
Richard Patrick (Filter, Army of Anyone)
Jeff Schroeder (Smashing Pumpkins)
Dan Spack (Volcano Choir, Group of the Altos, Collections of Colonies of Bees)
Eric Struthers (Aaron Neville)
Vinnie Valentino (Steve Smith & Vital Information)
Craig Wedren (Shudder To Think, Baby)

Easy editing
Editing is simple and intuitive thanks to a unique, large overview display that allows you to quickly add, delete, or change the order of effects—something not easily accomplished with the average pedalboard. There are also four independent editing displays for zeroing in on the perfect sound, each bank providing the responsiveness and hands-on feel of a stompbox. Store up to 200 of your custom effects-chains as patches in memory, each instantly accessible at the touch of a footswitch.

Powerful pedals
The G5n's expression pedal gives you smooth real-time control over volume, tone, or selected effects parameters, with four stompbox-style footswitches to kick effects in and out on the fly. When you're ready to take a solo, get the bump you need with the G5n's output booster. And to synchronize rhythm patterns and delay times to the beat, just hit the G5n's dedicated Tap tempo footswitch to bring your sound in line.

Complex tonalities
It would take an arsenal of stompboxes, amplifiers, and speakers to duplicate everything you can do with a single G5n. Use up to nine effects and amp/cabinet models simultaneously, chained together in any order you like. It's like having hundreds of fully loaded pedalboards in one compact, easy to use device.

Practice up, play out
68 built-in rhythm patterns make the G5n the perfect practice rig and enable "one-man band" performances. An onboard Looper (which can be used with the rhythm patterns) allows you to record and overdub phrases up to 80 seconds long through the effects of your choice. Plus there's a built-in chromatic tuner, always accessible at the touch of a footswitch—you can bypass the currently selected patch while tuning, or mute the signal altogether.

The ins and outs
The G5n can be easily integrated into any live performance or studio rig. In addition to a standard guitar input, there's an auxiliary stereo input for the connection of smartphones or music players, plus a dedicated headphone jack for silent practice and dual outputs for mono or stereo L/R connection to guitar amps, PA systems, and audio interfaces.

ZOOM Guitar Lab software
Use the free ZOOM Guitar Lab Mac/Windows software to instantly download new patches, effects, and amp/cabinet simulators. It includes both a Patch Manager for effects chains and an Effects Manager, with a simple graphic user interface that provides point-and-click control over tweaking, building, and naming your custom patches.

Will be watching ZOOM for future improvements.

Comments about Zoom G5N Guitar Effects Processor:

This effects pedal seems to be perfect for me. Not priced as high as the pod or Boss Gt. Most of the programmed effects are usable but easily edited if need be. Not sure if the small control pedals on the base of the unit would be useful for a gigging situation as they are quite small. This could present a major problem if you are gigging. I've had older (more expensive Boss and Line6 processors and hated them. This is better IMO.

Comments about Zoom G5N Guitar Effects Processor:

I don't normally do reviews but I couln't let the criticisms of this unit go unanswered. I have owned several Zoom pedals over the last 25 years starting with the 1010 and found the G5n to be the best sounding unit yet. I have the G3 and while it sounds very good, it is a little awkward to use live. The G5n sounds slightly more organic and natural and is far more easy to use live. While earlier units required a lot of tweaking to get a good sound with a few of the amp sims, this unit sounds surprisingly good on all of them and you would have to work to get a bad sound with it.

The processor gets overloaded occasionally when combining certain options but there are usually alternatives to get what you want. The drum function has been criticized for taking up a processing slot but that means you can set a rhythm pattern and speed in a patch and save it as a song patch just as you left it. I place the module after effects and directly above the tap tempo, which allows you to change the tempo with your foot... fantastic. I can now create a separate patch for each song with the rhythm ready to go if I want to do a small side gig without my band.
Lack of effects loop, total effects and direct out? I have a G3. Effects loop between the units, direct out and six more effects. Oh yes, I can now have Three expression pedals going at once.
To make peace with our drummers wife, we started running everything direct to board and practice with headphones. I duplicated all my live patches, added cabinets on the G5n and ran out of the G3. It sounded like the real thing. I'm sure now if my amp quit I could go straight to board at a gig and the crowd wouldn't know. For running direct out of the G5n I also have a direct box.

I am very picky about my sound, and I am happy with this arrangement. If you feel limited by the G5n, pick up a used G3 and you'd still have a bargain. Pay no heed to those who only evaluate it on paper and haven't spent any time with it.

Probably Not The Upgrade You Were Expecting

By Dave

from UT

About Me Experienced

Comments about Zoom G5N Guitar Effects Processor:

Given this is supposed to be the next iteration of the G5, and at the same price point. You can't help but compare it to that unit.

Lets compare the two shall we?

Z pedal? Nope. The original G5 had this, the G5n does not.

Switchable Tube Boost? Nope. They did away with the actual tube. The G5n does not have the tube or the switching feature. Regardless of whether the boost is on or off your tone is fed through both the boost and tone (singular) control. So you might as well say good bye to all that EQ'ing you did previous.

Amps? G5: 22 G5n 5
Effects? G5: 127 G5n: 68
Preset Storage: G5: 297 G5n: 200
Computer Editor for Patch mangling: G5: Yes G5n: No

Nice things about the G5n:
Switches for scroll, tuner, and tap tempo.
A Decent looper with decent time restraints
Supposedly downloadable effects in the future
The addition of cabinets

There are several things with this product that are in-excusable. The lack of computer editing (not the librarian software) software is ridiculous.

The fact they about halfed the features of the original and still charge the same price point. Now this may have been a selling point if the sounds you were getting out of this thing were 2X as good. Sadly they are not. The unit sounds about the same as the G5.

No central patch exchange! Zoom needs to get with the times along with Boss.

For those looking for an upgrade to the G5. I would suggest you skip this product all together. It is not an upgrade at all.
