If The Doctor played guitar, he would own this amp. It's bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Just got one yesterday, and played it for about an hour last night with a Telecaster. It kicks. I overdrove it by cranking the Gain and Volume, and also played clean by backing off on the Gain. Great sound both ways, and amazing volume for something this small and lightweight. I've had a Lunchbox for a couple of years, and LOVE it. This is half the size, and it still matters.

The Lunchbox JR looks absolutely beautiful. Metal grille, pretty knobs, pretty sparkly silver cabinet. ZT pays great attention to visual detail!
Buttons turn smooth and durable power switch. No junk here!

Nice portable size and can be powered from automobile cigarette lighter (12-volts)! I live fulltime in my car, so this works out perfect!

Too bad the ZT Jr produces a lot of hiss when the volume is above its' 1/2 setting.
The hiss is produced when powered from regular 120-volt electricity (in a building) AND 12-volt auto batteries!

Turning the TONE control knob counterclockwise makes the speaker flop as a result of bass increasing while reducing the treble. When playing the guitar, this can be a problem, since the sound quality turns muddy.

This amp is NOT high-fidelity.

It is really loud (more than 35 watts), especially with the gain turned up. Easily loud enough to play in a small trio, with un-mic'd drummer.

It makes really good rock-guitar sound.
Jazz sound is not achievable with this particular amp (unlike the ZT Club amp; it just won't produce midbass (the circuitry and speaker cannot keep up).

I ended up selling it, and bought a Yamaha THR10 & a Roland MiniCube (which is Louder than 5 watts and both amps will operate from automotive battery with 9-V transformer).

Other than the hiss & other unwanted transients (such as low-fidelity), the Lunchbox Jr is a wonderful amp!
I would recommend this amp to a friend, but with restrictions.

Comments about ZT Lunchbox Junior Guitar Combo Amp:

Great small size, has a nice full sound that is normally lacking in small packages. However, I have 5 Watt amps that are as loud as this 35 Watt rated amp, so I am dissappointed from a volume standpoint. It needs a 'Speaker Out' jack to make it more versitile.

Comments about ZT Lunchbox Junior Guitar Combo Amp:

I was well aware of the dimensions of the thing before it arrived, but opening the box and actually holding it is still pretty shocking. I found it to be small on a scale that it left it hard to believe that it would be functional for more than a practice amp. I accepted that the small size could be handy but expectation of sound quality was suddenly diminished.

I stand corrected. The sound is excellent. It is definitely more than a curiosity that is smaller than a breadbox. It will put out a substantial amount of volume with a substantial low end range that was a tremendously satisfying surprise. For my modest needs, it far exceeds my expectations.

I would like to note, for jazz guitarists I think you'll find this to be a surprisingly versatile and capable tool, not just a toy.

          Best Uses

          • Jamming

Comments about ZT Lunchbox Junior Guitar Combo Amp:

Nothing in this size class compares. Tweak three knobs and you've got a great warm clean electric tone, a great electric overdrive, or even very good acoustic electric amp (I'm using it with a T5z plugged direct and do not miss reverb or any other effects). I had to own it for the last 6 weeks before I came to love it. It benefits from being on the floor near a wall (better yet a corner) to boost the bass response. However all the way down on the floor you need to turn up the tone a few notches from 12 o'clock and ideally have it 6 feet or more away for that tone to get up to the height of your ears.

The noise floor is high on this amp (white noise -- the kind of stuff some bedside devices generate to help people sleep). For quiet practice at home you want to run the gain as high as possible, which for clean play requires some experimentation. Not sitting right on top of the amp or putting it up on a shelf makes the noise floor more acceptable.

It's tiny 5" speaker can't reproduce 35 watts of clean RMS power without coloration. So I think playing with a well controlled drummer is limited to overdrive tones where the speaker's size is not a sonic limitation.

It runs very cool (even after a four hour jam session it was cold to the touch) and must be all digital for its power supply and power amp. I tried running it on 8-AA batteries (I bought a cheap 8-AA battery holder and an adapter to take it from 5.5/2.1 mm OD/ID to the 5.5/2.5 mm OD/ID the Junior requires for its DC power input) and it seems quite viable but I did not test battery life.

I bought the carry bag and it is amazing showing up to play with my T5z in its case and that tiny amp slung over my shoulder.

Try any of those small amps out there and you will find most of them sound like toys with a built-in effects pedal (try an open position G chord and listen for distortion when playing the low G & B notes). There are no built-in effects, but this is no toy.

Comments about ZT Lunchbox Junior Guitar Combo Amp:

I've been playing nearly 50 years. I love light amps and am always looking for new formats. This one is top of the line, but it won't replace a 1X12 combo for general applications. On its own, it's a smooth-sounding low-volume blues or jazz amp -- perfect fpr a guitar-piano duo. The sound gets dirty much faster than 35 watts would suggest. You cannot use this in a band setting if you don't mike it or play overdriven. I use it with a ZOOM G2 to add reverb and modeling. With these effects it sounds great. The various features all work. Great little package, nice job ZT.

This is a great amp for both bedroom practice and recording. For a tiny amp, the sound is excellent, from clean to distored. It also has some nice extras like the battery hook-up and the ability to power pedals. If you are going on vacation and need an amp to practice with, this is the one! It also looks realy cool!

I've only owned tube amps since I'm playing which is many years. I ordered a Lunchbox and although the power was awesome and tone good it especially in a band situation for playing at home it just didn't do it for me. I tried the junior on a whim and fell in love with it. This in now my everyday practice and jam amp.

Comments about ZT Lunchbox Junior Guitar Combo Amp:

I've been teaching, recording and performing for over 40 years, and this little baby is the first piece of gear to make me sit up and take notice in a long time. At room volume, I use it for bass, keyboards or guitar, and am amazed at the tonal quality coming out of such a small package. The distortion leaves quite a bit to be desired, but the clean tone is amazing considering its size. For teaching, a coffee house gig, or a low volume rehearsal, the Lunchbox Junior does it in spades!

I tend to gig a lot, in a variety of different situations. This often involves: Get am itinerary with a set list by email, youtube links mp3s by email, and maybe 1 quick rehearsal in somebody's house/basement/apartment before the gig, to square away endings and intros, harmonies, etc. this is perfect for that. This amp, a couple pedals and we're set. even with a (reasonable) drummer, just fine.

Wish I would have pulled the trigger on this sooner. I needed a small practice amp having a 10 month old baby at home. This fits the bill perfectly and it's a major bonus that it handles pedals well. Sounds great even at a low volume

Comments about ZT Lunchbox Junior Guitar Combo Amp:

I bought this to create a very portable fly rig, for a concert later this year where I may not be able to get a decent amp on location. A guitar, a couple of pedals, and this amp, and I can get by and have good sound.

It's about the size of a Pignose, and with similar maximum volume (despite the watt ratings). Unlike a Pignose, it's capable of a very decent clean sound. It's loud enough to jam along with a moderate drummer (I've done it), although it won't cut it in a really loud band.

The dirty sound is pretty good - not as good as a Pignose, but better than most inexpensive portable amps. It's touch-responsive and has character. The only real shortcoming of the sound is a lack of bass oomph, which is to be expected with the tiny speaker, but it's adequate.

Construction quality is really good. I have no doubt it can be tossed around casually without any problems. It's all sealed and tight-fitting. I'm sure it will be fine shoved in a bag with a pedalboard and hauled on an airplane.

I haven't yet tried running it off batteries yet, but I don't see why that would be a problem. I'm probably going to get a laptop charger battery that puts out 12vdc, rather than the standard AA-eating kit.

Overall, I'm completely satisfied. I play in a band where we practice more-or-less unplugged, and it's terrific with unplugged vocalists and acoustic guitars. It's also great for bringing an electric guitar to acoustic jams. Glad I got it!
