OVERVIEW

Massive fuzz in a hand-silkscreened aluminum chassis.

The Vexter Fuzz Factory from ZVex is a 5-knob fuzz pedal with 2 NOS '60s germanium transistors, and it comes in a hand-polished aluminum chassis with hand-silkscreened, 2-color text. Though the circuit isn't modeled after any one specific classic fuzz, it delivers tones straight out of the 1960s. These 5 knobs control the Fuzz Factory's parameters at various operating levels, letting you shape your own personalized fuzz effect.

ZVex designed the Fuzz Factory to consume less energy than other effects pedals. When on, the Fuzz Factory's current is less than 3 mA. This fuzz pedal is hand-painted and assembled, and each is unique.

Fuzz Factory Controls

Volume: Output level

Gate: Squelches noise after end of sustain. Turn to the right to eliminate squeals, hiss, and buzz, stopping just as they disappear, or use to tune in exact feedback pitch. Turning to the left opens gate.

Compress: Adds attack characteristic when turned to the left, which gets softer to right, and suddenly pinches tone when all the way right. Also tunes in fat, feedbacky fuzz. Lower the Stability and see what happens to this control.

Drive: Increases distortion when used as a "normal" fuzz and adjusts feedback pitch and tonal thickness.

Stability: Use to control feedback pitch. This is one of the more finicky controls, so it will take some experimentation to get it right.

Honestly I've thought about selling this pedal. When I get to that point, I wrap it up and stick it in the closet. And like a 'skeleton' I always go back for it and let it out. I've owned it for about 5 years now and I will probably never get rid of it. Yes there's oscillation, yes there's screaming sirens and yes there's that sticky, scratchy Velcro. When using this pedal I've had it in the front, middle and end of the chain, before and after the fx loop and every day it's like a new pedal! I'm also not a big muse fan but with all the hype the guy gets goes to show the functionality of this pedal goes way beyond what some people may have negative concerns about. All in all, the reason I truly love this pedal is because how different it is and how you can really find an individual sound with it. It may be mass produced as a boutique but there is nothing generic about it!

First off let me say I have wanted this pedal for at least a year. I went to boston and tried this pedal at Guitar Center. I played the pedal using a 1963 Fender Jazzmaster and through a Fender Deluxe Amp. I was so excited to try this thing. My intention was to buy it. After playing with it for over an hour I realized it was far too difficult to use and had a lot of sounds that were virtually unusable. Im a huge fan of Nels Cline and I love a good sounding heavy fuzz pedal. This is a good fuzz pedal dont get me wrong. but the amount of usable fuzz is over powered by the sounds that no one really needs. I was very disappointed in this pedal. I ended up purchasing an Electro Harmonixs Big Muf with tone wicker instead. To each his own but this pedal was just not for me. If you insist on buying this play it first and then decide dont buy it without playing it first!

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

Don't think I have ever given anything perfect scores but this pedal is insane.Features: This thing will produce pretty much any fuzz sound you want, and then some, if you set the gate right it is dead quiet, and you can even set the stab control to a desired feed back pitch. You have to go to the website and try the settings listed.Quality: Works perfectly every time, for as sensitive as the controls are it has no issues, Please note: this needs to be first in your chain to sound best, if you run it after pedals with heavy buffers it will not work right at all (like a Jeckyl and Hyde)Value: This is the same as the hand painted model for much much less not sure how you can go wrong with that.Overall: If I lost it I would need another almost instantly.Plus when I had questions I e-mailed Z-vex and Zack Vex himself got back to me right away: How cool is that? You can make this pedal sound like a very traditional fuzz or you can use it to destroy everything in it's pathI have run it through both tube and solid state amps as well as some modeling stuff and it always performs. It will never leave my board!!!I have a pigtronics Disnortion and A Big Muff Tone wicker and this will do pretty much anything they do at 1/3 the size (although I like running them together which is a personal sickness)E-mail me if you want I love to talk pedals:

      Zvex Fuzz Factory

      By Gabriel Torres

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

Overall I couldn't go wrong with this pedal because Matt Bellamy (the lead singer/guitarist/pianist) of Muse is my greatest inspiration to play guitar, and his style includes some pretty unique/creative riffs. The fuzz factory and creativity go hand in hand! If you are a die hard muse fan, then this pedal is so totally for you. Not to mention i have tried countless different fuzz brands, but the zvex fuzz factory is in it's own league of awesome.

If your interested in this pedal then GET IT, it's so worth it!!!!
The zvex fuzz factory has got some really awesome sounds and unique trademarks that you can't find anywhere! The best part of this pedal can also be the worse part, simply depending on what you prefer. If your one of those people that enjoy getting to know a pedal with time and patience, then this pedal is great for you. Quite frankly the more familiar I get with the pedal the more I enjoy it. I find the discovery of all these little tweaks and different sounds really exciting. I plan to gig with this pedal eventually, but in the meantime the pedal requires alot of getting used to.
The quality of this pedal is great! I love the size and the amazing unique tone quality it produces. The overall pedal is pretty solid and like everything the better you take care of it, the longer it will last!
The pedal is a bit pricey, but it's definately worth it because it is great for what it does. However in comparison to other pedals, there are many GREAT pedals that are great for thier purpose, and they are tons cheaper.

          Pandora's Fuzz Box

          By LoveZ my Vex

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

This is truly a pandoras box, if you are like me and love tweeking with your FX this is for you. I've had mine for a couple years now and have fallen in/ out and back in love with this little terror. Frankly its a great sound when you get it dialed in right, and unfortunately there is no magic formula, the amount of compression, drive, , gate, and stability all depends on the gear around it. Its very sensitive to how hot your pickups are as well as the impedance up and down stream from it. Personally my best combo with it so far has been a LP straight into it then follow it up with combinations of fx afterwards from octave, wah, to vibe, then landing it into a high gain amp . But I do have to admit when you get the right juice flowing it is an ungodly tone that will make you want to just groove on its howls and screams all night. My advice is get one, and if you don't love it right away, put it away and try again the next time you change up your rig or axe, it will eventually convert you. I can attest!

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

Don't buy this pedal expecting to find a sweet, subtle fuzz. This device is pure evil. The knobs all interact with each other in unpredictable ways, and many settings oscillate and scream with a muted guitar. That said, if you are looking for an incredibly versatile pedal that you can play with for days, this is it. You can make your guitar sound like a broken radio or tearing velcro and you can coax out ringing upper octaves. I can pick up radio on mine. Solid construction, true bypass, long battery life, and complete sonic mayhem.

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

Warning: This pedal is NOT a toy, will not play safe, don't use it live unless you know it well. Cons: I don't see any. It's a beast, deal with it or buy a safe pedal.Pros: Once you tinker (a lot)and make it work with YOUR gear, it will give you Unique sounds, so write everything down, because every change makes the overall sound different, even radical, just try the pedal with the same settings in different amps and you'll see, change guitars and you'll see.If you don't have time or patience and just want fuzz, get the Big muff or a Fuzz face, they have all the classic sounds with a few simple dials. It's a well built pedal, with quality components, never had a problem with it, personally, I like all Z.Vex pedals, but this one takes the cake.

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

I love ZVex pedals and have a couple others (Lo-Fi Loop Junky, Ooh Wah). Finally got around to buying a Fuzz Factory recently, and holy crap, I can't believe I ever played without it. The good parts: The sound quality and build quality are tremendous. You can get some really sick fuzz tones out of this box, and you've got hours of fun just playing with it as soon as you hook it up. In fact, if you have this, any decent eq, and maybe a Big Muff Pi, you can generate pretty much any fuzz sound you want. This pedal and its flexibility helped me get over all the single-purpose boutique fuzz boxes I used to lust for (Devi Ever, I'm looking at you). The less good parts: You have to be willing to tinker a lot to get that kind of variety, and God help you if you accidentally bump the knobs while you're gigging. Yes, it squeals. I kind of like the insane self-oscillations and screeches. If you don't, you'd better be sure to write down settings that work (some good ones are included in the one-page manual). I have a short list taped to my pedalboard for quick changes during a gig. On the whole, just a great stompbox, and now the only fuzz/distortion/od pedal on my board.

            Versatile, with some caveats

            By RobW

            from Temple, Texas

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

While some other pedals produce something fuzz-like with some hard clipping on the high frequencies, this pedal has a very convincing fuzz. With the atypical controls, you can get some very nice glitchy, ripping fuzzes with this. The gate allows nice "broken" glitchy decay sorts of effects. The knobs seem non-linear, so settings can be extreme. For example, compression can make a sawtooth wave sound. Quality is good, but the jacks all seem to stick a little. If there is a battery compartment, it must require unscrewing because it's not visible from the outside (though a Boss AC adapter works with it). Warning: be careful with your hearing, as the "stability" knob seems to be a tone generator you mix with the guitar signal, but can't really turn off, you can only gate it so it doesn't ring past your playing. It's frequency increases as you turn clockwise, all the way to the limits of human hearing...and perhaps beyond. It increases quickly, so you abruptly go from around 16-20khz to "silence". Low-pass filter it, put a soft overdrive after it, or turn the stability knob down to where you can hear what's going on at the high frequencies. Listener's fatigue can set in quickly with this pedal, though fuzzes can sometimes be that way in general. All that aside, what you DO hear is a good sounding fuzz, is hard to mimic with another pedal, and is really useful when miking two separate cabs blended with two different sounds, or when mixing with other pedals. If you like tweaking, this is a great pedal for finding a unique sound. If you are looking for a more traditional fuzz that isn't biased to making "weird sounds", you'll get better results with a more traditional pedal. But at least try this one out first and decide for yourself.

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

The instructions provide you with several presets for a variety of fuzz tones. I like the fact that there are 5 controls to customize the fuzz tones to one's liking. Sure, there are a few settings that are not within the proper operating range and are unusable. Solution? Don't use them! That's one of the trade-offs for the versatility this pedal provides. Get this beauty...you won't be disappointed!

              Veritable Factory of Fuzziness!

              By Anonymous

              from Undisclosed

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

The Fuzz Factory is, by far, the most insane and versatile fuzz pedal you will find today. By that, I don't mean that you'll be able to dial in the exact fuzz sound as other famous pedals (and it shouldn't have to, it's not a modeling pedal), but you still have a ton of options with what it has to offer. You can go from a smooth and creamy old-school fuzz sound to an insane high-end modern rock sound with just a few tweaks of the knobs. And these knobs are infinitely tweakable, and the number of settings and sounds people have found with just this one pedal is truly mind-boggling. I personally have found that it does interact well with some overdrive/distortion pedals running before it in the signal chain, and I actually prefer this sound to just the Fuzz Factory alone. But even by itself, this pedal sounds amazing. It's also built solid with a nice mirror-ish finish that takes up almost no space on a pedalboard. The only downside (and some people actually like this aspect), is that this pedal is very noisy when engaged and sometimes likes to pick up faint radio signals as well! But, whatever, I can live with that. There's a reason why Matt Bellamy of MUSE has this pedal built-in to many of his custom Manson guitars! Well worth the price, and awesome fuzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

I went to a nearby music store, in search of the Dunlop Hendrix Fuzz Face I have been looking for for months. It (of course) was not there, but they had a couple other fuzzes there I had not tried, so I decided to give them a shot. I tried the Fulltone Octafuzz, which I thoroughly enjoyed, and then the worker suggested this little unit. This pedal is A LOT of fun. It is, however, very, VERY confusing and difficult to work with. Although oscillation and feedback abounds, I could not get a conventional fuzz tone out of it. Keep in mind, I had no manual, and only messed with this thing for about ten minutes. I'm sure it is possible, but it should be a little easier than it was. Now, for the important thing: the TONE. This thing, when playing, sounds fantastic. But, as soon as your guitar stops sending a signal through it, there are squeals and screams that are, through my experimentation with it, unavoidable.Overall, I thought this was a cool pedal. I was looking for a much more traditional fuzz, but I could see the appeal this pedal could have for the wilder people out there.

When I first plugged this pedal in, I thought it was too difficult to use and too out of control for any kind of practical purpose. After tweaking a little and learning how the controls interact with each other I am now stoked about having bought the Fuzz Factory. This thing is the bomb. Frusciante style bends and dive-bombs, Paranoid Android-esque glitch-fuzz, you name it, this thing does it and does it well.

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

First things first, I'm a bass player. That being said I really like the pedal. It is treble heavy, but with a mantic conceptual thug I can boost the lows if I want. I had no issues dialing in various fuzz sounds with the pedal. The gate is perfect to cut the overtones to play only when I hit the strings. It's a noise gate that mutes the sound until triggered by you playing and it allows you to tweak the pedal to carry some sonic overtones that would otherwise be disruptive and constant. This design makes the pedal extremely versatile. The different fuzz tones you can dial in are nearly endless. Sometimes in electronic music the bass section can be carried by a treble section perhaps with a pulse wave and a high pass filter. I found a similar use with this pedal on bass guitar and I plan on doing some synth type sounds with it to drive a "bass" section. It pulls off classic fuzz too but perhaps drops the bass a bit too much for straight use on bass guitar without a bass booster. You gotta love it for what it is and I do. It's also a smoking deal at musician's friend!

Comments about ZVex Vexter Fuzz Factory Guitar Effect Pedal:

Well, let me first start off by saying that I discovered this pedal by the one and only Matt Bellamy whose name is always tied to this pedal. No surprise since he has this pedal built into like four of his guitars! To anyone reading this I give you a warning: This is NOT for the weak at ear!!! It is capable of producing crazy oscillations that I truly love! Now for the review. When I first bought this pedal, my expectations were high. As soon as I plugged this baby in, it went above and beyond all my expectations! This is literally my favorite pedal on my pedal board. Since this is not a model pedal, this thing truly is a monster all its own. The 5 knobs can all shape you your very own fuzz and this thing is definitely my cure-all. So far I have managed to dial in (no exaggeration) about 20 different tones. No joke. This thing is capable of dialing into some old fuzz tones, to distorted craziness!!I got this thing for Christmas along with a whammy pedal (another monster all its own) and I was a happy camper. I don't think I could live if somebody stole it. But if it was stolen, I would replace it in a heartbeat. Oh, and by the way, for those who won't read the instrustion, I highly suggest you do. But if you won't turn the Stability (Stab) knob all the way right if you don't want your pedal to oscillate right off the bat. Also the oscillations are fun to toy with. All in all, this pedal is definitely my favorite pedal and I highly suggest you run down and get it.P.S. The pickup selection you use has a different take on the tone too. I can clean up with a roll of the volume knob. I'm planning to make a youtube video of this beauty for more details so be sure to look for it.
