I own 8 basses, all but 3 are Fenders. I will still be a Fender user, but this Conklin Fretless will share first choice with my Fender Fretless. It sounds great. Great percussive attack to mellow upright bass tones with loads of tone combinations in between. It looks great. Good materials, good construction. Conklin told me that with a great deal of care and a minute amount of super glue, I could make the cracks in the finish disappear. Don't think I will chance it . Even if you can see them, they are not that bad and I'm not about to go after an instrument like this with super glue. Reasonable weight and comfort. Common sense, buy a good quality wide strap. Suede is ok, but sticks to your shirt. Buy a good leather strap and you'll be good for the whole night. I'm not good at slap and pop, but in the right hands ..this bass would be hard to equal.
Body to neck junction almost seamless. Neck is very easy to change postitions on. Fingering is extremely easy. I could live without the locking instrument cord jack, but it's no big deal. Wide ,wide range of tones are possible. Great looking woods and finish.
Fit and finish are first quality. I understand that this is Conklins import model and I am very satisfied with it. I can only imagine the workmanship of their domestic models.
I found this bass Used at a great price. It has a crack in the finish by the volume/tone controls. From 3 feet away you can't see the damage. I feel like I got a great value for the money. Even without being listed as used, this bass would be worth the money.
Most comfortable neck I've ever quite possibly played! Great Tone from the conklin pickups. Glad I chose it over the twice as much fender!
I have used Fender Jazz basses exclusively for over 10 years, when last year I came across this beauty in the used section of the local music store and just had to have it. Well balanced construction, perfect sound and it's not too heavy or too lite. It's perfect in every way!
