I just thought I would update my reveiw since it has been 3 years now since my last one. Well boys I still play 4 nights a week a she just keeps kickin. I have never made an adjustment or done a thing to this bass and we play hard 4 hours a night 4 nights a week every week.my neck is showing some wear and the frets need to ne files but no buzzing yet. I just have to say this is a hell of a bass I did not pay what they are going for now but 7 years is a long time I don't carry a backup bass maybe I should i did for years (have a 5 string &a 4)I have put this bass threw hell we play rough hony tonk gigs here in KY and the equiptment really takes a beating moving around so much. I use a ampeg svt350 a 4x10 cab on top of a 115 on bottom run them both full range is this a monster I can't imagine getting a better sound. So if you are lokking at a shector or esp or whatever pass that by and give conklin a try it will chage the way you think about a bass it has so many possibilty's. Mine is a pretty natrual curly maple it is the nicest bass I have ever ownesd by far. As I said 3 years ago it's a timex. Keep on rockin.

Okay, it's a budget bass... BUT: 1) tuner holes are WAY too large for Gotoh tuners; had to wrap tuner casings with tape to shim them... 2) neck has NO relief with truss rod completely loose; fortunately it's a pretty true neck... 3) Neutrik jack was literally ready to fall out of socket, had to fill and re-drill holes... 4) pickup height adjustment screws were too short; replaced screws, was able to get pickups to proper height... 5) this is subjective, but mine has the most BORING quilt pattern I've ever seen on one of these... nothing at all like the typical pictures I've seen... I use this bass to play out with, and it's fine for live use (I do like the overall feel of it), but I couldn't recommend one to anyone else, unless they have basic guitar repair skills under their belt, or know someone who can set it up for them. Overall, very lackluster, and rather PLAIN!!

Custom Bass Builders Beware...

By Dr Funk

from Fort Myers, FL

I have many basses 4 to 8 times the money but none have the live versatility of this base. The new Bartolinis with 3 band EQ are beyond the Bartolinis I have in several other Custom basses. Fit and finish is second to none. Purple heart fretboard is spectacular in physical response as well as it's sonic characteristics relative to the body woods. It took one 4 set gig to get used to the "not so typical" neck/body joint. Undoubtedly the best value in a bass I have come across since my 66 Jazz Bass!

The best bass you can buy under 1000.00

By Buy a Conklin Bass

from Central Ohio

I played so many different basses before I was finally able to actually see a Conklin Bass. I was a bit wary about the fact that it was made overseas at the price it was going for, but I must admit that I would play this bass over even some U.S. Fender models. The quality is fantastic, I couldn't be happier; the Bartolini pickups simply cannot be matched and the tone is beautiful. It is the perfect bass for Funk/Jazz/R&B or anything else for that matter!Forget that Ibanez, Spector, or Schecter Bass you've been considering. Get the Conkiln, you won't be disappointed!

By Satisfied Customer-KYfwb

You can't go wrong with this purchase. Great sounding bass, high end, low end growl WOW.The wine finish is gourgeous. The feel of it makes you want to play and play. Easy battery access.I have yet to walk in any store and find a comparable bass of any price that has felt and sounded as good. Can't go wrong.

Top notch bass.

By War & Peace

from Oceanside, Ca

This is the finest instrument that I have played and I have 14 years of experience. The craftsmeanship as well as the tone that comes out of the electronics sets the instrument apart and above all others in my experience.

Great

I bought the 5 string version with the Bartiloni pick-ups and right now considering ordering the 4 string model. I love how smooth the neck is. Sound is very flexible for any style music. What I noticed was that the strings, regardless of what I use on the bass, seem to be alot softer, even in standard tuning(not as tight) than many other basses out there. Which I like because I have small hands. For the price, sound, quality , you can't beat this ax. I've looked at very high end basses but there was always something I could pick out that I didn't like. I told myself "why spend all that money and look so hard for another bass when I already have a great bass in my hands." Now I just have to order a 4 string to get back to basics...(I prefer 4 string for slapping)

Fantastic sounding bass! Fit and finish were superb. The neck and overall geometry are very good. This bass would be a value at twice the price!!!

You won't able to put it down, I haven't.

By Dan-qkOPw

from Cooper City, FL

The playability is wonderful. I especially like it unplugged playing sitting down and I can place my chin right on the part of the body that is extra long. I'm believing that it was built for that. Great sustain, and the snakeskin strings are a must try. They feel & sound perfect. It seems I can go weeks without tuning up. It really holds well. I paid alot over two years ago, I keep watching the price go down and am amazed, steal at that price. No, I don't work for the company - just love this bass AND the case.

This bass IS all that...

By jeepin420

from Roanoke, VA

I wanted a new one, but the availability dates kept changing so I went with a used one. Anyways, this bass lived up to every expectation I had and what everyone else has said here. I lowered my action a good bit and I can FLY up and down this neck while playing every note with very little effort. For you guys that like playing with a soft touch (if you do you know what I mean) then this is a bass for you. If youre a slapper, double thumper, or whatever else... this is bass is for you. 10 across the board for me. This bass is impressive for the price.

Great bass

I bought my GT-4 about a year and a half ago and am still as happy with it as I was the first day I played it, the neck is the fastest I've ever played and the pickups are perfect.

GT4

By BassPlayer-pIz_n

from Wilmington, DE

The appearance and ergonomics of this bass are excellent. I especially like the thin neck. The first one I received had faulty electronics, and we had to return it. The second one seems fine, although I have heard a few strange phaser-like sounds and pops that go away when I move the volume knob. The bridge is massive, but buzzes when I slap the E string hard, so I plan to put a better bridge on. All in all, excellent value for a gorgeous bass, but not perfect.

Review for Conklin GT4 Bass

By Beautiful Bass17

from Manteca,California

Wow! talk about alot of bang for the buck. This bass has a phenominal sound and its playability and feel is just outstanding. The bass is beautifully contoured and extremely lightweight. It is such a beautiful and great playing bass If I didn't know I would of thought that it would of came from the custom shop. I play a schector and a fender jazz bass, and this bass has become my new favorite. This bass is good from everything from jazz all the way to heavy metal. The excellent highs make for a great sounding slap and pop but it also has great lows witch make for a great bottom end. My only complaint is that when I ordered the bass it did not come with the quilted top like I thought it would, it came with some sort of tiger stripe finish witch is still great but not what I fully wanted. All in all, If you are contemplating whether to by this bass please do, you will not be disappointed in the least.

Beautiful Bass, great action, good tone

By the_lithographer

The finish on my GT-4 is one of the best that I have ever seen. The quilting pattern is awesome, and the overall body shape is beautiful. My GT-4 has great action. I am able to get the bends I need without much strain. There is no fretting out whatsoever. The string height didn't have to be adjusted at all. In addition, all 24 frets are very accessible. It is actually easier for me to get to the higher frets than the higher frets on my RIC.The GT-4 has very good tone. I did, however, have to adjust my pickup height and adjust the slap screw on the back side. Other than that, I have had no issues at all with this bass. The locking input jack is also a blessing. Usually I use a wireless but every now and then I use a cord. It never fails that I step on the cord at least once. The lock help me keep plucking along without missing a beat.Overall, this has been a great bass, well worth the money that was spent on it. My RIC gets a lot less action now, that's for sure.

Excellent

The only complaint I have about this bass is that I feel out of place when I play live with it (which is often), because out 2 guitar players play fenders and gibsons...and here I am with a crazy looking arm on the top of my bass. Other than that, this is one of the best basses I've ever played. I've never made any adjustments to other than intonation. It's not heavy and is balanced well. I put a DiMarzio locking strap on it and have never had problems with anything. With Elixir strings and an Ampeg on stage...sounds great.

Best bass ive ever owned

By Bishop1025

from Roseville, CA

Ive been playing bass for about four years now, I know not long, but I play alot. Ive owned this bass for about two years and I hate to have to put it down when im done playing. I play everything from hard rock, to funk, to moonlight sonata on this bass and it sounds and feels perfect. The slap switch is also great for funk and the locking cable input has saved me a couple of times. Ive played the high end basses and they are great too, but you can never beat this price and I like playing this one better then some of the high end warwicks and fenders so for what this bass does, and how much it costs, I would HIGHLY recommend to every bass player I know.

Great bass....

By ChromeBass

from Bloomington, IL

This bass is maybe the best bass I have ever played. It has a great low end and some serious treble punch. The neck joint on this bass is so well made it feels like a neck-through body. The bridge is very sturdy and keeps in tune for weeks. I was on a two week vacation and by the time i got back and picked my bass up it was still perfectly in tune. This price is amazing and i would recommend this bass for any kind of music.

What more can you ask for??

By EmoryBass

from Knoxville, TN

See all my reviews

I just had my first real problem with this model, after nearly 7 years of owning it...And not just owning it, but putting major wear into it...A screw came loose in the input jack, and while playing live I stepped on the chord and ripped the jack completely out of the bass...That was my fault for not keeping up with it, but it was an easy fix...That's the only problem I've had besides battery dying or having it go out of tune, what more can you ask for for a bass at this price?? Great sound, rumbling lows and trebly/mid highs...Band tunes down to Bb, I customized mine where it's stringed BEAD, and it's handled it like a champ...If you see one, at least play it and you'll see why all these reviews are good...
