The combination of this bass and the shopping experience with Musician's Friend have left me floored! After a small issue with backordering, the cutomer service reps and a supervisor took such great care of everything and made me even happier with my purchase and choice to buy from them.

On to the bass, this thing is amazing! Everyone has already said it, it is much more beautiful in person. The tones you can pull out of this thing are limitless, after only having played with this for two days I've been able to get an impressively wide range of sounds and tones out of it I never figured I could. The sound quality is amazingly clear as well. Tapping, thumpin', plucking, everything comes across very well pronounced. I don't regret buying this bass one bit!

I have searched a few sites to find the proper tuning for 7-String Bass Guitars. Obviously, there are a number of different ways to tune your 7-String Bass Guitar...all of which are up to your particular style and technique!

Here are a few known tunings.....
A) B1 - E2 - A2 - D3 - G3 - B3 - E4
B) A1 - E2 - A2 - D3 - G3 - B3 - E4
C) E2 - A2 - D3 - G3 - B3 - E4 - A4
D) D2 - G2 - B2 - D3 - G3 - B3 - D4
E) 1F - 2C - 3G - 4D - 5A - 6E - 7B

The first four show a number after the note of the tuned string... (...I have not found out what these numbers stand for...) ...but, only the fifth listed denotes the number of the string with the note to tune at!

Personally, I use......1B - 2E - 3A - 4D - 5G - 6B - 7E which makes buying sets of strings a bit easier.

Bill Dickens gtbd-7

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

This Bass is worth every penny.I have been playing bass for 25 years and have a great selection of high end basses in my closet and this bass makes number 8 , and I'm sorry to say the others will forever stay in there dark nest. The signiture series Bill Dickens TPH Bass is the best action of any Bass I own and I'm talking about the comparison of $5-6,000 bass guitars. The picture of the bass does not do it justice, The color is beautiful and has an outstanding finish,Tone is very versital and the preamp makes no noise at all. From slap to heavy metal his thing is a monster. A bit on the heavy side but what do you expect from a seven string bass. the only reason I gave a 4.5 on features is the knobs and tuning keys are not the original Conklin but if they fail you can replace them from Conklin at their web site. So if you need a kick butt bass don't hesitate to buy the gtbd-7 from musicians friend.

GTBD-7 = Affordable Excellence

By FunkIsPreacherJazzIsTeacher

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

I have purchased from here many times, but have never posted here. This is a real-deal gig-worthy 7-string extended-range bass. Play bass lines, chords, and single-note solos and be happy. Finger style, slap, pluck, thump, etc. This versatile pro-quality bass is the best in its price range. Want something better? Bill Conklin will be happy to build it for you. Just bring your checkbook and be prepared to pay three or four times the money of this model. Thank you Mr. Conklin for licensing and mass-producing the GTBD-7l. Thank you Mr. Dickens for your design input and amazing musicianship! Thank you for carrying this great bass.

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

This thing is amazing. Narrow string spacing keeps the neck width manageable. Tonal variations are great with this incredible preamp system. It has bass, mid, mid frequency selector, treble, treble frequency selector, pickup selector and gain. The custom Bartolini pickups sound incredible, both for slap/pop or fingerstyle. I don't use a pic but I imagine that would sound great too. It's really not as overwhelming as it looks and it's fun and easy to play. Intonation and action were perfect right out of the box. All my other toys are sitting in the closet now.

    Ultimate Bass

    By Jimi Brix

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

I've been playing for 35 years, played almost everything out there. This bass has rendered my entire line-up of high quality basses obsolete. It has an incredible feel, incredible sound right out of the box, lots of room to tailor your sound any which way. I highly recommend this beautiful instrument! My biggest problem now, is what to do with all of my other basses on stands or in the closet! I don't have the heart to sell them all, but with this bass in hand, I never even look at them!

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

My favorite Bass, I own over 14 different basses and have played everything on the market. This is my all time favorite Axe. It can cover most of the bass sounds needed for any situation. It is easier to play than most 6 strings models and has the thump, sound and feel (fun) of the four strings. I haven't enjoyed a bass this much since my (og. String Ray)Music Man.

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

I just got this today, and have played it for the last few hours. I love it so far. The neck is nice and thin, with the string spacing done so that it isn't too wide for being a seven string. It is much easier to play than my Washburn 6 string. Will really be able to tell tomorrow at band practice, but I have a feeling this bass will be played daily for many years to come.

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

If you're not buying a custom bass, this is the best you can get. Any bass that costs more is over-priced. This is the best playing bass I have ever used. I am never going to buy any other brand of electric bass again. People assume that warwick and tobias basses are better because they cost more. However, I would say that I would take this over any 2 warwick or tobias basses any day. If you buy any other bass you are making a very bad mistake.

This 7string bass is a revelation to play.I have had
Over 20 years experience with a 6 string Alembic so I Don't have a problem with the wide neck. The instrument arrived with a few small glitches which I was able to put right myself.
I am thrilled with this instrument, I own 5 other high end basses and this one is right up there with them.

Great feeling neck, Killer...... I repeat KILLER electronics, and perfectly balanced when strapped on. I love this thing! Smokes my Yamaha AND Alembic six strings in sound and playability.String spacing could be a bit wider (aftermarket bridges ARE available) but I can still slap this baby pretty comfortably.

Good bass for the price. With the approval of Bill Dickens, it has to be good. It's a comfortable, seven string bass. for those who want to test the waters of a seven string without breaking the bank, this the instrument to use for an acid test. The high "F" string gives it the full contrabass (Low "B"), standard bass tuning, and tenor/picollo bass range one instrument. When will it be available ina fretless?

I play jazz guitar, but always liked the bass, but not a four string one, now that conklin makes a seven, I found I can do everything on this bass that I do on a jazz seven string guitar, and still hold down the bottom end when needed.

This is my first 7 string, and I couldn't be happier. An amazing bass with amazing sound, neck is suprisingly easy to play and very smooth. The pupleheart fingerboard is soft and sounds wonderful. I got the wine color and the gold hardware sets it off, just letting everyone know that it's a pimp. I would suggest this bass to anyone who is bored with the 5 strings, skip the 6 I say, that's what I did.

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

This is one of the best basses that I've ever owned, and I've owned nearly 40 basses in my life time, many of which were high-end basses also. I've had 2 Ken Smiths, 1 Alembic, 2 Tobias'. Of all the basses I've had, only 2 surpass the Conklin, and they are both Yamahas - TRB 6's (1 is the Patitucci model, which doesn't sound as good as the regular TRB6). Other than those 2, the conklin is the best. However, I did have to put another bridge on it just to widen the string spacing, which the neck width allows.

Comments about Conklin Guitars GTBD-7 7 String Bass Guitar:

I have the GTBD-7, a well-made instrument, with a very wide variety of tones. I am a sucker for natural wood finishes, and this one is simply gorgeous. A few cons about the instrument, the string spacing dictates very small slap strokes, which limits the showmanship. I had to have a nut replacement, as the one on the instrument had uneven spacing. One other detail, the bridge saddle for the F string on mine will spontaneously lower itself (!) and I have to check it before playing. If I had a wish, it would be 19v operation, so I am currently investigating that mod.

I go through Tweaking on all of them when I think I hear/feel something, but the Conklin's extra range allows me to go farther in range, sounds Good in all types I use it for, Gospel, Jazz, R&B, Oldies, Rock, Whatever
