Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series Hollowbody Bass:

Some aspects of fit and finish are amazing. Binding on the body, neck, headstock and F holes are flawless. Frets are well finished...smooth at the edges and filed flush. The flame maple is very nice and the finish on the body and neck is very smooth. But mine had a finish drip on the side of the headstock and one tuning peg was installed slightly crooked. Neither affects playability and they would be hard to notice unless you are inspecting closely.

Volume and tone knobs are wood (ebony?) and the three line inlays are a nice touch. Fretboard wood is very dark, close-grained rosewood that can almost pass as ebony. Block inlays are flawless as is the more complex logo on the headstock. The belly on the top and back of the body are flawless. This can almost pass as a carved top instrument. Neck / Body joint is flawless.

The pickups are very hot. I did A, B comparisons. Much stronger than those on a Gibson SG bass and equal to DiMarzio P & J pickups. No pickup buzz. If you like a duller sounding bass, this is for you. Funk and bright snaps and pops, not so much. But if you want that sound, why would you get a 32 inch scale bass anyway. BTW, the scale, which is midway between the typical long scale of 34 inches and the short scale at 30 inches, is comfortable. The neck is a bit wider than most.

No-name sealed tuning pegs hold tune well. The hollow body will feed back a bit more. But I was able to get the volume up very high before that happened. The hollow body also produces some acoustic sound,,,,even if it is only good for quiet rehearsals.

Comfortable to play sitting. But the headstock heads south when standing. (But not as bad as the Gibson Thunderbird.) Choose your strap wisely (avoid the smooth ones that slip and slide.) BTW, the strap buttons have felt washers to protect the finish. Access to all 22 frets is possible via the cutaway. The input jack is very good. Holds very tight w/o static. Pots are also smooth.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series Hollowbody Bass:

I was always skeptical about buying any instrument online without playing it or hearing it first. I was always curious about the new D'Angelico instruments, but never had the chance to lay eyes on one. I was considering a few hollow body basses from a Gibson or even a Guild Starfire but leaning toward Starfire. From the looks alone and of course the history of D'Angelico, I took a chance and ordered the D'Angelico bass! I absolutely love this bass. It is better than I could have imagined. The feel of the neck is killer and it is comfortable to play. The action can be adjusted fine and the sound is killer. At first, I expected it to have a boomy thud only as many hollowbodies are. While it can get that traditional hollowbody sound, it also packs a punch. I'm not a pick player, but the tone with a pick is awesome. The pickups are unusually loud for a passive bass but they don't sound mushy. I still can't believe the detail on this bass from the inlays to the binding and the way the binding meets the neckjoint. It does not feel like an import! I just did a recording with my band and brought this bass along with my main P-bass. As soon as the engineer heard it, he said, "Let's use that one!" Again, I was a bit skeptical even though the MF return policy is great, I am not one for the hassle of reboxing and sending back, so it took a LOT for me to order this bass sight unseen. It was well worth the risk and even my girlfriend compliments how nice it looks!

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series Hollowbody Bass:

This Bass is beautiful to look at. Lots of compliments at gigs, many think it's a custom bass. Lots of compliments on its sweet, mellow, woodsy tone also. The short scale is comfortable to play. Details on the fit and finish very nice as is the distinctive headstock that has people trying to get a look at while I'm playing. I play in an acoustic duo, guitar & bass and I have pretty much switched from my Fender Kingman to the D'Angelico.

Comments about D'Angelico Excel Series Hollowbody Bass:

A beautiful guitar that receives many compliments. Light weight body, excellent craftsmanship, responsive selector switch, and no neck down pull. Because of the hollow body design, you may encounter some feedback when near your amp, but this is to be expected. Out of the box, I needed to have it restrung with flats and the neck adjusted. Once done, I am pleased with the sound and play. I wanted something different and this filled the bill. The D'Angelico brand is making quality instruments and should be considered when looking to buy.
