The Dean Edge Q4 plays and feels like it should cost twice as much as it costs. It has a beautiful quilted maple top and its 5 peice maple-walnut neck is very comfortable. The active circutry and the EMG HZ pickups sound very good and clear. I would recommend this bass to any intermediate player.
This bass is excellent for everything from punk to jazz. The only thing that I wish it could have would be an active pot for a mid control, but it is still a great bass. It has a very fast, slim neck and access to all the frets is effortless. The EMG humbuckers are sweet.
The asthetics of this bass are very pleasing. The neck pickup is well placed well working as a thumb rest (if you choose to do so) the whole thing is just super comforable. I got a fretless and with the Active EQ it's very diverse. Upping Mid and Low gets a wonderful round, stand upish tone and doing the mid range scoop is great for slapping and tighter passages.
Overall this is the bass to buy if you are on a budget you can get any sound from it the thunderous lows if you cut the highs boost the highs and you have a jazz bass. The neck is very sensitive to tempature changes and needs adjusted more often then other basses but its a tradeoff for a lightning fast neck and the quilted top looks beautiful i have an older red version i wouldnt trade this bass for almost anything
The EMG pickups that come with it are fantastic and the builtin 3 band EQ is great but the only complaint i have is there is no blend contol but it is offset by the 3 band EQ
The quality of sound on this bass is suprisingly fantastic and it is just well built with a thin lightning fast neck and the finish is beautiful
One of the best values in terms of quality looks features and price
I've had my Dean edge Q4 for two years and have had to make two truss rod adjustments (something I've never had to do with my P-bass), but this neck is very narrow & lightning fast! It seems to be a little sensitive to temperature changes, otherwise, fantastic bass. Compare to Ibanez SRX (maybe thats SRG?), Ibanez may be a little hotter but EMG HZs a little fuller on the Q4. The fit, feel & finish are as good as some guitars costing twice as much. If you can't decide on a color, go with blue. You won't regret it!
Firstly and foremost, be careful - this bass does NOT have active pickups. It has EMG-Hz passive pickups which then go through an active tone control circuit (bass and trebble). The build quality is excellent and the guitar is very playable, with a very slim neck. It sounds OK, not brilliant (there is some mains hum present with the treble turned up) but nothing nasty. It's lows are nice and low but the highs don't have that bite unless you turn the treble up and live with that mains hum.
I've had a Dean Edge Q4 for about three years and have never had any problems with it. It has great tone, and it has many features. Best bass I've ever played in this pricerange.
I've been playing bass for 10 years and this would be the best I've played. Had experience with Fender, Warick, even Rick. This thing hangs with them all. Get this and don't second guess. Great action and tonal range.
This is my second Dean bass. My first was the Q6. Decided to downsize back to 4 strings so I bought the identical Q4. No complaints at all. Both of my Dean basses are the best playing, best sounding basses I have ever played. I've owned several different brands: Fender, Peavey, Warwick, Modulus, no one comes close in the features vs. price comparison. And the quality is second to none!
In the past, I didn?t particularly like bass guitars. After playing some of my friend?s bass guitars I didn?t understand why anybody would want to. The usual ugly head and the over size machine heads just didn?t appeal to me. Also the sound was of a muffled nature. However, I decided to buy a bass. The dean edge caught my eye straight away. It is a seriously cool bass. It can be played in any style of band and it just wouldn?t look out of place. The sound is clear and defined, which exceeded my expectations. The guitar is smooth and responsive and is a true pleasure to play. The only disappointing feature is the head. I would have preferred the typical dean head, with the wings as seen on the razorback. All in all, a top class beast!
