This bass is an awesome addition to my collection. Right out of the box, it was ready for the stage, no set-up necessary. All I had to do was tune it, plug it in and start making thunder. It has a very different voice from my other basses and fills the bill wonderfully. The two octave strings in each course gives it a rich, full and dynamic sound. Sometimes our Praise Team has to play without a guitarist, and this compensates beautifully. One time, I plugged it into my POG-2 and turned it into a huge pipe organ. I don't have big hands, but I can navigate the neck very well and hit all the string without a problem. This is a sweet machine. I'm happy and proud to add it to my collection. It's also fun to watch people's reactions when they see it for the first time. The Praise Team I play with never knows what I'm walking in with from one time to the next, and it's fun to keep 'em guessing. It may not be the best choice for someone's first bass, but I think that, even if it were, a new player could get used to with some practice and patience. Anyone who wants something different like I do should certainly check this big baby out. I'm sure glad I did!

Overall I did not like this product

This bass is awkward to play because of its styling. The 12 string is an awesome concept. Like a 12 string guitar, the sound is really cool!

Comments about Dean Rhapsody 12 12-String Bass:

I got the idea for the 12 string from both being a long time Cheap Trick fan and also seeing Doug from Kings X play them. These guys both play Hamer but they are no longer made. I play with a thumb pick and all downstrokes already, and this limited style actually is perfect for a 12 string bass. This thing can fill up the sound like a rhythm guitar and bass as one item. I have already had a blast demoing with it. My main band was not sold on the sound, they love my Rickenbacker, but I hope to use it some in another live setting. I am very happy with the sound, as a Ric player it is right up there in brightness and springyness. The super wide neck does take a bit of getting used to when playing standing up, but it was very easy to use when playing seated/doing demos.

Comments about Dean Rhapsody 12 12-String Bass:

I've had my Rhapsody-12 long enough now to have a solid opinion of it. I like different sounds from different basses, and this one certainly adds a whole new voice to my bass choir. Yes, it's a tad heavy at 9+ pounds, but so what? I also have a Conklin GT-7, so this bass is light by comparison. Granted it probably isn't for novice bassists. It didn't take long to get used to it, mostly because I sit down to play. I have very little of the reported nose diving because of that. All in all, I am very pleased with this big baby. Like some, I don't have great big hands, but transitioning from an 8-string to a 12-string wasn't much of a stretch for me. It goes totally nuts through my ME-50 pedal. I hope to play this baby for a very long time.

    A BASS FOR GUITARISTS

Comments about Dean Rhapsody 12 12-String Bass:

    Or, a guitar for bassists.

If you're at least a moderately experienced player with the fingers to handle a broad neck, and understand what an Octave Bass can add to your repertoire, this could be for you.

Novices, or players with smaller hands, would likely be frustrated.

I find the Big Dean gives it's best when put through a dual amp system, such as a two channel compressor/splitter sending the low frequencies to a bass amp and the highs to a guitar amp. Amazing what you can tweak from that sort of combination.

My only quibble is that the stock strings (as is often the case) aren't the best -- creaky, twangy and hard to tune and stay in tune. Get a set of d'Addarios made for the Hamer 12 and you'll be happy.

Comments about Dean Rhapsody 12 12-String Bass:

Progressed from a 1962 Hagstrom 8 to the Rhapsody and found the wide neck a big difference after the super fast Swedish model. Have now been playing it for about 8 years and wouldn't swap with anything. Works wonderfully as a bass/rhythm instrument and bass chords really add fill to any sound. I am a pick player and as such can separate bass strings from treble drones for change in sound. Excellent value for money.

Comments about Dean Rhapsody 12 12-String Bass:

The Dean Rhapsody 12 string bass is the most interesting bass I have ever owned. What I like the most is the depth of sound produced by all of the strings and the controlled sound the pre-amp enables. It's just and awsome bass for jammin'!

    Killer old school funk bass

    By Snap

    from New Orleans, La.

Comments about Dean Rhapsody 12 12-String Bass:

I play with four R&B bands and they always request that I bring my 12 string Dean. I can get that added guitar and bass lick sound. It takes some time to get your fingers to get the strings to ring evenly. When you do, you won't want to stop playing it.

    Interesting

    By Yo Mama-G5rB2

    from Ventura, Ca.

Comments about Dean Rhapsody 12 12-String Bass:

I have been playing bass for 7 or 8 years now, and when I was first looking for a bass I stumbled upon this one. I bought something different only because I knew that a 12 string was to advanced for a beginner. Any one who complains that this bass sucks when its there first bass is an idiot. using a pic on it was OK, but I found that fingers is the way to go. having the bass strings facing the bottom lets your fingers glide over the guitar strings with no problem. You don't need to slap, pic, or hard pluck this guitar, it's not meant for that. It is a unique sound that should be handled by REAL musicians, not a bunch of jack offs that want to play as hard and loud as they can. She's delicate, and VERY musical. I can't wait to buy it very very soon.

    Awesome posibilities

    By Jackman dew

    from Grand Rapids, MI

Comments about Dean Rhapsody 12 12-String Bass:

This is a great bass. It really fills the sound out. I split my signal w/Xover then run highs to a guitar amp and lows to my bass amp. The trans-parent black is cooler than I expected. I play mostly with my fingers. it takes a little gettn' used to the difference in string size, but that is to be expected. opens lots of posibilities.
