I purchased the Dean HBF Fretless and found it to be a great value for the money. I got it as an alternative to my Bass Fiddle and found it works great with my Fishman transducer. That removes some of the Fretless snarl produced by most fretless bass guitars. I did need to have the neck adjusted to get it set up right, but since then it plays great. The hollow body is much lighter than my son's Fender. I prefer a soft deep bass sound as close to the upright as I can get. With the Fishman transducer and all the treble adjustments shut off, I'm well satisfied. AND its a dream to play. I would buy it again.

The bass is not a very high quality one, though the sound it produces is quite nice. Introductory Yamaha basses are much more solid, and well put together, but the Dean did have a nice thin neck and did sound fairly good. I like the plastic fretboard simply because you can use round wound strings on it without worrying about wear. The tone pots are fragile, and if you twist them too hard you can break the knob.

No Fret, no worries

By NoFretBassMan

from Huntsville, AL

I got this bass a few years ago. Only problem was the electronics. The pick up is junk. I put an EMG HZ pick up (for a 5 string) and an aguilar pre amp in it, and now it sounds GREAT! The playability on this bass is well worth updating the electronics. I use flat wound strings, and it is comparable to high end fretless basses.

As good as it gets

By Easy Answer

You can't get much better than this in a fretless bass. I've owened it for 5 years now, playing at least 2 hours/day. I've had it set up once, and that was all its ever needed. Very reliable (I've even accidentally frozen it solid) and its just always come through. Good tone for Jazz or rock, not punchy enough for punk, but using a pick helps. This is a GREAT buy.

not for everyone

It's a good bass, but it's definatley not for everyone. It's good if you don't want a very biting sound, which is pretty popular these days

Beautiful guitar, beautiful sound

By DavidB-woJft

Fretless basses are very limited these days, and this Dean is a good choice over any other. Style wise, its beautiful. The twin f holes and shape make this bass seem likes its from another era (i recommend black finish), causing you to stand out from the rest of the band wherever you go. It plays insanely well and feels perfect in your hand when your playing. I recommend this bass to anyone who is interested in playing fretless, or just looking for a great bass.

Excellent Find

By Johhny in Phoenix

from Florence, AZ

This is a terrific fretless. Played well right out of the box with no setup work. Sounds great. I own a Geddy Lee Jazz, an MV Padulla, and several other pricy guitars. This one gives nothing away to them. Sound is perfect if you need a true fretless effect. Not good otherwise in general. Do not buy unless you truly need fretless effect (of course, right?). I am very pleased with this guitar in all respects. Worth twice the price easily. Looks, plays, and feels GREAT!

A Bass Apart

By Mashenstien

from Upstate SC

Been playing guitar and bass for 30+ years and Just bought my daughter a stringed version of this bass for her first bass. Love the tone- a little "woodsy" dry- and find it produces enough tone for any genre. This is a wonderfully playable instrument with overall great weight and feel. She has to pry it out of my hands to practice!

I am in a bluesed-out hippy jazz band and this thing works wonders and gives me the tone I love.
