Thank you, Epiphone for making a long scale (34") version of this bass. I've always loved the looks of the EB-3, but hated the short scale.
The neck pickup of the EB-3 has long been known as the "mud-bucker" and really isn't suited for those who want a modern, bright sounding tone. But if you want to use both pickups together, raise the bridge pickup closer to the strings and you'll have much better tone in the #2 position.
Another issue with all EB bass models, as well as SG guitar models, is that the neck strap button will need to be moved to the upper horn to keep the instrument from trying to dive and face the floor. Any EB or SG player knows this. (Google a picture of Toni Iommi and see where his strap is attached.) An easy fix if you're experienced in guitar mods, and a cheap fix at your local music store. I also tweaked the truss rod a bit to my own taste. But that's with any guitar. Overall, one of my best purchases.

I bought this bass in 2009 just to have a bass to practice with. When it arrived I was surprised how nice the paint job was and how nice and shiny the chrome hardware was for an instrument that cost so little. For that price I didn't expect much. I experimented with different set ups and found that it plays best with a lot of relief in the neck. The bridge pick up needed to be adjusted to get the sound even between the four strings. Eventually I got it to the point where it plays and sounds pretty good. This would make a good first bass for a student or a good spare for a veteran musician. I've had this SG for 5 years and it's a keeper.

Comments about Epiphone EB-3 SG Bass:

After I adjusted the truss rod and bridge height to my liking, I discovered the bass had a low fret which caused the first note on each fret to buzz. I think I could have gotten Epiphone to fix this under warranty but I ended up paying a repair guy to rework the frets so there was no buzzing.
Also, the bass is top heavy. Attaching the strap to the top of the horn helps a little but it's still too top heavy. It helps if you use a non slip strap that grips your shoulder. The best solution is to loop thin black ribbon around the 13th fret and tie this to your strap or tie the strap to the top of the neck. Also, you'll need a case - Epiphone makes a case for this, the EB3CS.

Comments about Epiphone EB-3 SG Bass:

Started playing bass in the early 60's had quite a few different basses, bought this bass in 2009 have the matte finish in red. when I first got it I had to do some work on it, strap holder, neck adjustment and sound controls had to be tweeked to get that problem with e string solved.I play twice a week and love this guitar it stays tuned very well even temp changes. I think every guitar needs to be set up properly for all musicians to their liking. My buddy owns the Gibson eg 3 that I sold him 40 years ago, will match this one up any day. It truly is a great sounding guitar.

Comments about Epiphone EB-3 SG Bass:

This was a return item. No one had purchased it for a month so I thought I would take a chance on it. I have owned an Epiphone EB before and this one is much better quality. I'm primarily a Fender fretless person, but I know that this model seems to have kind of a unique sound. It was in beautiful condition, however it did have some fret buzz. This was not a big issue to me since I take new guitars to a professional and have them set up anyway.. The tech said that he "tweaked " the neck , bridge and one of the pickups. No longer have any fret buzz and it feels really good to play. Like everyone says , this model really does have a significant neck dive, but I just be careful and deal with it.....no problem. I like this version better than the short neck ones and I am slowly familiarizing myself with the control combinations. Overall, I think I got a very good bass for the money.......time will tell

Comments about Epiphone EB-3 SG Bass:

I own 6 bass guitars, including an old Ric and a Hofner. I switch out every four or so months depending on my interest/boredom. This is a solid bass with a great sound, a favorite of my band mates. Unless you're a purist, you don't need to spend the extra money for the "Gibson" nameplate. (Yes, the Ric sounds better, but I'm a little paranoid about it "disappearing" so I don't use it on gigs much).

Comments about Epiphone EB-3 SG Bass:

Neck has a nice feel and is comfortable to play. Two main complaints: 1. The E-String sounds a bit dead while the rest of the strings have a good response. 2. The bass and neck are top-heavy. Let go of the neck while you are standing and it takes a nosedive if you have a slick strap.

Still and all this is a nice instrument for the price.

Comments about Epiphone EB-3 SG Bass:

The sound is very uneven, the E sounds dead while the D is louder than all of the strings put together. It needs a setup every month or so, which is WAY too often. It sounds flat and toneless with either flats or rounds, i've tried both several times. I've played it through a Hartke A100, TC Electronic BG250, and an SVT stack. Sounded equally as horrid on all of them. The bridge will fall apart on you without a doubt.
If you plan to upgrade the living heck out of it, you could probably pull it off. The stock material is horrible so don't bother unless you got the extra money to put into it.
I would, however, reccomend the Epiphone Viola bass for the same price. I have both and the Viola sounds oh so good. It's my favorite bass to play in fact. So go try that puppy out and tell me I didn't change your mind.

Comments about Epiphone EB-3 SG Bass:

It sounds odd but kinda nice, very vintage lo-fi. A bit boomy in a good way. BIG problem is that volume between strings is uneven. This is a major flaw. The E string sounds dead. Also, the tuners don't work. So you need to upgrade those in order to play for more than 2 minutes without losing tune. The neck has a lot of dead spots. Be prepared to spend a lot of money upgrading. I have replaced tuners, brigde, pickup and strings.
