If you are serious about playing bass, this is your dream bass! It sounds nice through any rig, while playing one is an adjustment to any other 4 string it's the most comfortable bass you'll play. Almost every band I've seen play live or toured with uses stingrays, why you ask? Because they are rock solid, usa made. I usually don't care about it being made in the us, but this one is amazing. I have a 2003 mm stingray 4, This is the bass you can't afford to pass up. If you have back issues like I do, note they are heavier than any fender. But the tone is worth the weight. It sounds good through any brand of amp, it doesn't matter if you have an ampeg fridge or a gk combo. This thing will sound good. If you want the Grindy punk rock tone it had it, if you want deep metal tone it has it, if you want classic slap tone you got it. Throw a Sansamp in front of it and man you've got a great rig. Seriously these things sell used for over 1000$ because they are worth it.

I have read all of these great reviews on this bass and I'm curious if this is the bass people are actually talking about. When I recieved my mm I must say that I was very impressed with its look and feel. However, as soon as I plugged it in I found that there was no high end on this bass what so ever. The E and A string are 100 times louder than the D and G. I contacted musicians friend on this issue and they said that the pickup probably needed to be adjusted so I adjusted it and it still had the same problem. Another thing I didn't like about this bass was the position of the humbucker and the screws that hold it in place. There really isn't enough space to put your thumb. After all of these problems I decided to try playing the bass with a pick and I must say that there was much better tone and you could hear all of the strings. I think this bass was designed for the picking bass player in mind. I don't play with a pick so I sent the bass back. I have to give it up to musicians friend return policy. I had no problems with the return at all and they even paid to have it shipped back.

Stingray-Yes....Wife-No

By Fatoomsh

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

My Stingray has been through everything with me from the birth of my children to the demise of my marriage. She took everything...but not my Stingray. Okay they ain't cheap and they ain't that light but they have everything you could ever ask for in a bass. The ability to go from blues to metal to jazz with ease makes this one of the most versatile basses on the market. I've had mine since 88 and it looks it. She is well loved. Probably not the best bass to learn on due to the fat neck and weight but the build quality, tone, looks and ability are second to none. I heard my precision on the phone yesterday...I think she's seeing someone else. Oh well.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

After playing Fender Jazz Basses for years I decided to try Music Man. I tried a lot of Stingrays and Sterlings. Music Man basses can be as individual as Fenders, it might take some trial and error to find the right Music Man for you. The Stingray is a power house of Jazz Bass type tone. You can get the sound of both pickups in one humbucker. The HS models are good, the HH I haven't played one I like. The 3 band EQ may take some getting used to and time to find your sound but it's worth it. I think your standard SR will give you P and Jazz Bass sounds so a SR could be the only bass you ever need. Solid construction and ash body. Get a painted headstock! I can't suggest maple fretboards. They are not finished like a Fender and after playing it will get filthy. But that could be your thing. I was dubious of the 11" radius neck but out of the box my SR felt like one of the best necks I have.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

This was my first US made bass, and I am not disappionted with it at all. I will try to have it as long as I can. It has a distinct tone, unbeatable features, killer looks, and a fast neck. It's perfect for what I pla y and I love it
the features on this bass are basic, but they do their job well! a solid three band eq can totally change your tone, I just bump up the low frequency knob a bit because of the pick up spacing,
this bass is built like a rock, no problems what so ever,

I just got my MM in and I must say , I was completely blown away. Amazing tone and low end, with crisp highs and just the right amount of mids with all knobs at full. Three band active EQ is really solid. The flame on the neck and the fast and low action make this my definite new favorite bass. I use fingers and picks for our band and this bass suits any style you are going to throw at it. Put this thing through an SVT rig and really watch it shine. For sure my favorite bass that I own. Worth the money!!

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

This bass is SOLID. I bought my stingray 4 (natural ash with maple neck) in 2001 and have been playing it hard ever since. Low maintenance, requiring only minor seasonal neck adjustments. Neck is extremely solid and the strings rarely go out of tune. My bass begs to be played hard and responds well to any fingerstye or slap input. I have broken many a D and G string as a result of excessive popping and this bass can take it with no problems at all. This bass requires the player to adjust playing style to bring out the desired character as there are minimal options for tone shaping. This bass is very responsive to subtle changes in right hand technique; greater attack brings out the growl while light fingerstyle gives a smooth sound. Some people find the neck and pickup location cumbersome, but they both suit my needs perfectly. Overall, I love this bass and will likely never part with it. And it seems to be getting better with age!

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I have had a Stingray for about two months, and though it is pricy I and completely satisfied. EVERYTHING is solid on this thing, the double coil active pickups get a tone that will put drummers in a trance, and the bridge is nice and heavy so sustain goes on and on. I,ve only been playing for three years, but I have played some really nice pieces in my short career and I like to think that I have a good opinion of what some really good, quality equipment is... and the Stingray is easily the best fretted electric bass I have played. I will say tho that this wouldn't be a good bass to learn on, your gonna have use your fingers, and not the tone knobs to be able to get a wide variety of sounds and tones. Overall though, the best bass and maybe the best instrument ive ever played.

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

I've had one of these for years, and I just wanted to add a couple of comments that I hadn't seen in other reviews. 1) The ash body is heavy. Don't be fooled, I have a Fender with an alder body and there is a difference. 2) The neck. It's different than anything from Fender. String spacing is very wide which is a neat feeling, you never end up on another string by accident. But you have to get used to it. If you're a "J" player, it's a different world. But the neck shape is shallow so it feels super comfy. 3) The pick up placement. (For finger players) If you're used to placing your thumb on a "P" pick up or the front pick up of a "J", be ready for a change. With that one pickup down at the bridge you will be needing to make an adjustment. Not a bad feeling, just different. 4) Although you have the 3 band EQ, this (in my opinion) is a one trick pony. Everything at full blast is what this bass likes best. All other settings are a compromise. Buy it and enjoy it, it's a great machine.

This bass has been talked up so high, and all excellent musicians only play Stingrays. But the one I have had for four years is ALWAYS dull, no matter HOW many times I change the strings. The pickups are rusty, the tuning pegs are rusty, the bass is a LEMON.

              30th anniversary MM stingray

              from Pace, FL

Comments about Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4-String Electric Bass Guitar:

In the past I heard that ernie ball stingray basses were bad about the necks warping. I heard this from several magazine articles including one from Flea. I bought one anyway since it was my dream bass. I bought it brand new in 1997 and within a couple months sure enough the neck warped in a bad way. It did an S thing so I let all tension off the neck for a couple weeks and let the neck go back to it's memory. The bass was better off but still had slight warp but played well. I ended up selling the bass and told myself if I was going to get another one it would be an original. I found out they were releasing a 30th anniversary and it was made much better. You can just look at the neck which is figured maple and tell it is made much better. I have had no problems with this bass. It sounds way better then my 97 that I had and is built better than the current stingrays. They even upgraded the nut, the electronics and for the first time the body is made of mahogany. I recommend the 30th or the 20th anniversary models if you can find one. Much better instrument for only $300.00 or $400.00 more (and it is worth it)Comes with deluxe case as well.

I tried three stingrays in a music shop and all had poor build quality, worse than a lot of imports and far below price- level peers such as American Fender Jazz and Warwick Corvette. The neck- body connections had gaps large enough to slide a pick into. The frets were not trimmed sufficiently, all jutted sharply out the top of the neck and can scratch up your thumb when moving around on it. And all three basses had very bowed necks. If it were one out of three that had a bowed neck I would have blamed the shop, but with all three like that when no other bass in the shop had this problem implies that it originated from the factory. The only plus is the electronics, very hot and dynamic pickups. Maybe if it were set up properly it would be a $600 bass.

I have had a Love/Hate relantionship with this bass for years. Sometimes I get a good one, sometimes, not. Well, I got a good one. Had some bad experiences, in the past. QC has improved...tone for days...Bright as heck basses...always have been.
