A look suggesting medieval times but with modern tone.

The inspiration for the unique shape and design of the LTD F-154DX bass guitar from ESP would appear to be a mix of Route 66 Interstate signs and weaponry from an old Dungeons & Dragons manual. Forgoing the traditional, rounded apple bottom bass, the LTD F-series basses feature off centered curves, beveled edges, and points in places you won't see on any other guitar, let alone a bass. The double cutaway design makes the upper and lower horns appear to be a skeletal finger and thumb respectively.
The ESP LTD F-154DX has 4 strings, with a thin "U" contoured maple neck and 35" scale. The body is made of basswood with a flamed maple top that contrasts subtly with the rosewood fingerboard. As your fingers explore the 24 XJ frets your rhythms and melodies are trapped by dual ESP SB-4 pickups and can be reshaped with the ESP ABQ-3 3 band EQ. The ESP DB-4 string-thru-body bridge, tuners, and control knobs are all black nickel.

The only thing missing that was a little bit of a surprise was the 6 bolt neck attachment thats been a standard with their basses for a long time. Instead it has the common 4 bolt attachment method. Neck pocket is deeper then average but not as deep as with their 6 bolt instruments. Overall build qaulity is excellent. Like most instruments made today the strap buttons are overly narrow for their top width. So like with most I replaced those with nice wide top strap buttons. The 3 band eq is better then most with more useful treble and mid center freqs then commonly found in stock preamps. The soapbar pups have very nice voicings and can also do a decent P pup simulation. Overall very good thick articulate tone with plenty of crunch and growl avaialble. Body resonance and sustain is better then most other basswood body instruments Ive tried. So, Id say ESP Ltd is useing better grade of basswood then is commonly found on mid to lower price instruments. Very nice slim neck with 1 and 1/2 width at nut. Comfortable fast playing neck profile with well done jumbo frets. Very nice body shape and looks to the isntruments. The color is called see thru black, but to me its more a smokey black type look which is also very nice. Smokey black from the flame maple top and hardware. Along with the flame maple cap on the front of the headstock. The flame maple top is nice thickness, at least 3/8 inches thick as best I can tell. But not so thick as to overly color the sound. And no so thin as to be worthless sound wise like most basses in this price range.

Stylish and fragile don't hit and mike stands while your playing.
Has all the right features including a battery operated EQ (which is really 3 extra knobs below tone and volume) It is very stylish and has good quality pickups.
Although this is a nice looking guitar, it isn't very well made. The fretted maple finish is a veneer. Had I known that I might not have bought it. It is prone to chipping and cracking at the slightest bump and then it looks like crap. I actually had to return this gutiar 3 times because it couldn't survive the shipping process. The strings have buzz and need considerable adjustment.
      It's a pretty good value

      Its alright... not for me

      By Brandon Hayward

Comments about ESP LTD F-154DX Bass Guitar:

There is quite a bit of fret buzz. I had all adjustments made that would help and none of it did. Fret buzz is mainly on the Low E string. I have only played a couple basses and none of them had fret buzz like this one. The tone and controls are great but i just cant get over that horrible buzz. Its not for me.. I will pursue another Schecter.

      God of Chunder

Comments about ESP LTD F-154DX Bass Guitar:

Went from playing a Fender P-bass to this so I was concerned about making sure I got a fast neck. This neck is great slim and fast. The action from factory was perfect. Replaced with DH strngs. All the controls work great. The mid appears to buzz a little but not a big deal when you are playing. I like to play with all three tones control all the way up and then switch to the back pick up for high clear parts and then mix the picks for crunching. The body thru bridge is nice when tuned to C....takes up some slack. Great bass for the price. I really like it. The only knock I have againist it is the shape. Kinda funky to play when you are sitting down.

      Monster of a bass

      By SlickRattlehead

Comments about ESP LTD F-154DX Bass Guitar:

This bass is phenomenal, a great bass to either upgrade or strat out with. I had an gsr200 that gets it butt smacked by the sound of this bass making my ibanez look like scrapwood. Tones are amazing, the knobs are mids,Bass, and Trebles, along with the master volume and the pick up selector. For an insane tone I put all at max and use the very fron pick up and that gives an amazing growl. The only downside is you might want to change the custom strings to a higher gauge since that increases the tone, but factory strings are never the greatest anyway. I would recomment a set of DR Black Beauties (50-110.

      very amazing

Comments about ESP LTD F-154DX Bass Guitar:

I recieved this as a gift and i was blown away. I had the Rogue LX205B Series II 5-String Bass for about 7 months. And this was a huge improvement. I was stunned how well it sounded on my puny amp. There are not enough words to explain how much i love this beast of a bass. However when I play sitting down there is the little jagged part that digs in my leg. But that is a small price to pay for a great sound

      METAL BASS!!!

      By L.A.M.F.

      from Vista, California

Comments about ESP LTD F-154DX Bass Guitar:

This bass is the most godly instrument I have ever played or owned. The tonal options are very broad with the 3 band EQ (treble, bass, mids). The clarity and punchiness of this bass is unreal. This instrument is great for drop tunings as well. I recomend this bass to anyone who loves metal and loves to play it.

      AWESOME BASS!!!

      By ChronicSpd

Comments about ESP LTD F-154DX Bass Guitar:

This is the 4th bass in my collection. '73 Fender P Bass, Vester 4 Stage Series, Ibanez GSR200. This is BY FAR the best playing. I bought this because my Ibanez neck just won't hold up to heavy gauge strings. This does beautifully!! DADG and BEAD with no truss rod adjustments. I love the looks, it fits my style perfectly. The pics don't do it justice, the finish is truly amazing! The pickups sound great, but I'll eventually swap them for EMGs. With the active 3-band EQ you have a never ending range of tones. I usually play Drop D tuning and I love the growl of the bridge pickup. Overall it's an amazing bass that surpasses even much more expensive basses. I looked at many Dean, Epiphone, and Ibanez before purchasing this. ESP has them all beat.

      One Huge Beast

Comments about ESP LTD F-154DX Bass Guitar:

This thing is quite the brutal bass. Combined with the Monster Bass Cable (supposed to increase low end grunt...) this thing shakes the house, no joke one bit - and thats just on a 90w amp. The tone is deep and dark, as one would assume with any ESP guitar considering the nature of their artists. Overall I am EXTREMELY satisfied with my 154, but one thing did annoy me when I received the monster; there's 5 nobs and no explanation anywhere as to what does what. Its easy to figure it out after 5 minutes, but it was strange. A small smidge of the black/grey stain was missed around the edges of the pickups, but its too small for me to care about it. The standard strings aren't too great either so I would suggest getting a pair of elixirs or Ernie Ball strings to really bring out the awesome-ness of this bass.
