I play rock, blues, and punk rock. I bought this bass used because it had the features that I wanted (jazz neck, precision pup, jazz body, Bad Ass bridge), and it is absolutely gorgeous to look at. When I got it, the previous owner had set it up for slapping. It had round-wound strings and the the action was nice and low, but it made too much string-against-fret noise. It just sounded dead. I knew I had to change strings and set it up, but I was disappointed and lost interest in it. I had it up for sale for about six months. In the meantime, I had it on a guitar rack in my office with a couple of other basses. Slowly but surely I started picking it up more and more. I finally put on a nice pair of Rotosound flats, and it immediately came to life for me. I fell in love with the feel of the neck, the softness of the fret board, and the sheer beauty of the black with cream trim. I love the stealthy look of the neck. The neck is fast. The body balances nicely. It's incredibly light so it's easy to find that sweet balance spot and lock it in place. I play the guitar on the P pup mostly for that bluesy rock sound, and I dial in a little of the J pup and the tone when I need to cut through the mix a little. Wonderful guitar.
This bass has the feature set that I was looking for: Jazz neck, Jazz body, p/j pups and a Bad Ass bridge. The Strat style jack is a plus (it looks great and allows for a low-profile plug-in).
I'll never let anyone tell me that the non-American made Fenders are lower quality. This bass has a polished well-made feel.Sometimes lighter guitars can have a low-quality feel, but the Aerodyne feels solid and tight.
The feature set alone is worth it. It's at least two guitars in one (a Pbass and a J bass).

I gave the Aero 3.5's on Features & Quality. Only because I wish it had a mid range cut/boost (feature I love on the Stingray)and a better bridge. But that's nothing to complain about. Out of the box, the action was very low and acurate. It's a GREAT looking bass and the graphite pegs & knobs enhance the reflective, gloss look. It's light weight and has NUTS! I use Mark Bass/Mesa/Trace amps. The Aero works well with them all, Sans Amp or direct. ... PS. You can't tell by the picture, but the pinstripe gives it that Les Paul trip look..... Very nice. It was a good purchase. Impressive for an import!

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

When I bought my Aerodyne two years ago, I wanted one bass which could do it all. Deep booms, growly snarl, softness and subtlty, bright and clear. Something that could blend in with any music style. The list of instruments I tried (from £ to £££) included Squier Standard PJ (one had a broken jack socket new in the shop; the other's wood was dead and unresonant); Fender Blacktop Jazz (didn't like the neck finish), Fender Special Run Aerodyne (slightly cheaper, with pickguard, but less resonant and bassy); and a Fender US Special or Deluxe(?) PJ with loads of features but costing twice as much.

I settled on this Aerodyne. The only thing it lacks is a really growly snarl if I wanted to do metal, but anything and everything else is covered. Playability is perfect. Nice acoustic sound. Pups and pots are perfectly designed* - any combination of the nobs is usable for something musically. Lovely lovely.

However. The other day in a big music store I was trying out tuners and straps (without my precious Aerodyne) and behold! I saw an Aerodyne just like mine on the wall. I took it off and - no, it's not just like mine. The new one weighed at least a third less, I mean I felt it right away, not even side by side comparing. The acoustic sound was much thinner and less resonant. I read then it was basswood and thought mine couldn't possibly be basswood - it sounds great!

To be fair, it's probably the basswood on mine which gives it that natural softness allowing me to blend in with small acoustic groups, yet mine is resonant and loud enough to go big and boomy or cutting clarity when I need to. Not true of the one in the shop, I probably couldn't get as much depth or cut out of it.

So, make sure you try the INDIVIDUAL instrument before you buy, and not rely on the large price tag to ensure manufacturing consistency - yours might be radically different from mine...

*P.S. the bridge pickup does hum enough to give me a headache while idling, but isn't audible while playing.

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

I've owned many basses over the past 40 years including a Stu Hamm Fender and a Precision, this Anodyne is my favorite by far. Right from the box the intonation was good, I installed a new set of Elixers and took it to the stage. It has a very rich full tone to a distinct growl when you throttle the neck, very nice.
In the month I've owned it continues to make me smile.
        Very happy with this bass.

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

I bought this bass used a little while ago. It was already set up and had flats on it so the action was super low. I didn't change them out because the thing played just perfectly. I even bought a set of Steve Harris signature flats on them and combined with this bass it was super easy to nail his tone. Even when I changed over to rounds it only took a small truss rod adjustment and setup to get it playing perfectly. I switched out the bridge pickup but not because it was bad or anything. I just wanted something different. I also modded it so that I could split the output of the pickups in stereo. The control cavities are a little small but I don't blame them for it. The quality is second to none and I love the super high gloss. My one annoyance was that the finish around the neck pocket chipped. The finish takes dings super easily but that is common of basswood. It's a very soft wood and anything made of it will ding and dent before cracking. It's also kinda heavy but you get used to it pretty quickly. Anyway, I love this bass and wish I could get more. I also kinda wish that Fender would offer more colors other than black like they used to. All in all, Fender MIJ/CIJ instruments are of exceptional quality for their price

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

The pictures don't do justice to this beautiful bass. This is the only Fender with a carved top, and the back is sculpted as well. The front has a cream colored binding that you can't see in the pictures.
The action seemed high so looked more closely and discovered the bowed neck.

The Aerodyne body sheds some weight and you still have a full 34"scale. Black with smoked chrome trim - This bass is beautiful!

Comments about Fender Aerodyne 4-String Jazz Bass:

Tone? I've owned and played basses ranging from Fender American Jazz to Gibson SG 30-inch scale to Ibanez SR 570 with active pickups. Of those, the most tone possibilities belonged to the Ibanez active UNTIL I got this Made in Japan Fender Aerodyne Bass with passive pickups. Wow! Isolating the P pickups and the J pickup really highlights the tone possibilities of this magnificent bass. And blending the two sets of pickups offers infinite tone possibilities for any musical situation. It's great to turn a nob and instantly hear a change in tone. Playability? Hands down, the Aerodyne is the smoothest, easiest-fretting bass I've ever had the pleasure to play. My Gibson SG would come closest but would still rank second. The spacing between the strings somehow feels "logical" to my fingers. I lowered the action just a bit and found my comfortable setting. No fret buzz and intonation remained perfect. And this bass stays in tune! Fit and Finish? You can "feel" the quality just holding this beautiful lightweight but well-balanced instrument. Then when you play a run, you just have to smile! I am excited and happy with this great high-quality bass guitar.
