OVERVIEW

Updated bridge and new Fender design tuners modernize this classic!

The Fender American Standard Series Jazz Bass has a vintage body radius and contour for a classic vibe and feel. The Jazz Bass's body is rendered in premium alder for optimum tone and sustain. Its rosewood or maple fretboard features detailed nut and fretwork. The neck is graphite-reinforced and has rolled edges for a broken-in feel from the get-go. HMV (High Mass Vintage) Bridge increases sustain, provides punchier tone, beefier looking plates and 3/8" diameter vintage saddles. String height adjustment screws have nylon patches for a tight fit that won't vibrate loose.

A 12-gauge cold rolled steel plate machined brass backstop increases mass and enhances top end. Socket head intonation screws are engineered for a tighter fit, and are now more stable. The J Bass features Fender®/Hipshot® tuning keys. They work great, and are 30% lighter, minimizing neck dip. Classic 20:1 tuning ratio, cast zinc with aluminum string posts and mounting nuts, and steel clovers. Brass worm gears, steel worm drives.

With a thinner undercoat, the Fender Jazz Bass body breathes easier and has improved sound (more wood influence). Neck pocket paint buildup has been reduced by 40%, greatly improving the wood-to-wood connection/reaction.

The included SKB rectangular design case, exclusive to Fender, has TSA recognized and accepted locks. Fiberglass reinforced nylon trigger release latching system, indestructible cushioned rubber over-molded handle with flush lock out. Injection molded feet and exclusive arched stacking system.

I have the American Jazz Bass in Vintage Sunburst with a maple fretboard. Fender has certainly made huge improvements in quality control with this new series of American instruments. The fretwork and setup were perfect right out of the box, the finish looks great (and classic with the tortoise shell pickguard) and the knobs are smooth and straight (finally!). The neck is the most comfortable Jazz Bass neck I?ve ever played. It seems thinner than previous models and the glossy finish is different. It actually lets your hand slide up and down the neck rather than cause drag as previous finishes did. The one surprising flaw in the bass is the body routing for the bridge pickup. The cutout for the bridge pickup is simply too large. It forms a noticeable gap around the pickup in the body. I can easy fit a nickel in the gap around all sides of the bridge pickup. I can even see sawdust in there. The cutout is straight and even, but just too large. I went to the store to see if other new American Jazz Basses had the same problem, and they did. I?ve never seen this before, so I hope Fender corrects it (it?s probably just a setting on the routing machine). If you don?t mind that one flaw, the bass is awesome. It?s also surprisingly light for a Jazz Bass and pretty well-balanced. Finally, Fender really hit a home run with the new SKB cases. Perfectly balanced, light, super-comfortable rubberized handle, and great latches. Fix the body routing and this bass will go from almost perfect, to perfect.

I was surprised at the build and materials problems this bass has. It looks nice, but on closer examination there's a huge grain fault through the neck at about the 5th fret which, aside from being unsightly, will eventually turn into a neck warp or twist. This should not have passed QC. The centerline alignment of neck, bridge and pickups are off to a degree that can't quite be corrected with the available methods of adjustment. These are not the only problems, but they are the most obvious.Considering the price, this is pretty poor execution.

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

I believe this is the Bass I've ever owned ...
I've been a bass player long time ...I play 75 shows a year ... I bought a 5 string American Fender Jazz Bass couple years a ago ...This is the best Bass I have ever owned.. I like the Fender sound and feel of the Jazz bass , So It was a no-brainer for me to buy a 4 String.. I've used it on 2 gigs ..right out of the box .. All is g00d !!! in the old dayz you had to "fuss" with a Fender ... to keep it playing well ...I didn't like that much ...I have to work on my Harley alot... that's enough. I do intend to put on a fresh set of Roto-Sounds very soon ..but decited to give those Fender Strings another Look ..
I love the color ..Really is c00l under the lights ... I got a great deal THANKS.... M F
Beautiful Paint !!! Flawless ... neck is perfect
Great deal !!!

Modern Classic

By Michael Morris

from Nordth Dakota

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

An awesome bass, absolute class. Traditional style and tone. Great Value and made in America.
-Case is over-rated(no mojo), prefer classic style.
The American Standard Jazz is the still the most iconic electric bass(arguabley) and all a traditional bassist needs. The modern touches serve not only as functional improvements but aesthetic as well. -No need for active electronics on this sweet bass, no need to break what doesn't need fixing.
-Features are perfect for me, however, not everyone wants the passive tone.
-Traditional alnico pickups. Love the string through body and high mass bridge.
-Wish Fender would let us pick knob and pickup cover configurations.
Nearly flawless. I purchased a demo model, conition 2, so it had a couple very fine scrathes but hardly visible to the naked eye.
-Action came set up nearly perfect out of the box(medium low).
-Premium parts make premium instruments.
-Excellent craftsmenship.
Make no mistake, even used this baby is going to set you back. However, you get a premium instrument for your hard dollar.

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

Purchased based on my similar great experience with M.F. on an American DeLuxe Strat.
I do personally prefer a red tortoise pickguard (like they used in the '60's) over the supplied brown pickguard. An option on new product would be welcome.
Has exactly the features I wanted, a modern update on the Jazz Bass I have been playing for YEARS
Everything is as it should be.
Great value Used like new & a discount coupon also.

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

Ok, so I made the speech on another review about the Mex. P Bass being better quality now. I have owned a few Fender imports over the years, but not the same quality level as U.S. Fender. The import Fenders are much better now than they used to be, but the American Fenders are in a different class. I could go on and on with the features, but I will just say that once I picked up the 2011 U.S. Standard J. Bass in Blizzard Pearl/Maple @ the local music store I fell in love. I purchased it for my permanent collection. The quality is amazing, the sound and durability are great. The materials and craftsmanship speak for themselves... If you can afford it, get the U.S. Fenders !!

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

What an amazing instrument this is. I picked one up at guitar center and played for two hours straight. The action, feel, and sound of this bass is just phoenominal. I could play anything from Death to Parliament with ease and it sounded amazing. If you can throw down the cash, definately get this bass. Second to none.

Great Product

By Clark-QB22_

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

For years, I used a 1967 Jazz Bass that I bought new on 48th street as a teenager. This is a great improvement. The growl is still there. However, the noise from the pickups is dramatically reduced (I still use my ISP Decimator, however). And, the string-through bridge gives much more vibe to the body. All-in-all, a fine instrument.

2008 Jazz Bass

By bassist79

from Mid-West

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

I LOVE this Bass...and the more I play it the more I love it. Beautiful Neck/finish, great feel, nice "Growl". If you are into Jazz basses you know the positives, ... so I will tell you what I did not like and have already changed...Some have said I was stupid But, I cannot deny the difference that I hear. I felt that the Tunning pegs were rough, not that they slip(This bass holds it's tuning) but, maybe they need to wear in a bit...not to mention I am adding a D-Tunner to the Low E. I felt that the stock pick-ups were a bit thin on the high end so I swapped the PU's for Basslines Quarter Pounders, and with the quarter's I am getting the extra cut through that I would expect without switching to active ( I do not use active PU's and consider them a whole different animal ). As well, and I really hate that I am about to do this, even though Fender has created a VERY nice looking vintage vibe HM Bridge...I have put Badass Bridges on all my Fenders and am convinced that there is a positive sound quality difference where the sustain is a bit richer. I am not concerned about being a purest,(I may not even be around when this bass becomes a classic) I just want the bass I want. In retro-spect I guess I could have bought a Highway-one, But... I wanted a longer lasting Finish and the Hard shell Case that came at this price point.

American Jazz Bass made even better

By The Kids Alright

from Colorado

See all my reviews

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

I have had 3 jazz basses - the first I bought used in 1968 and later sold (ouch). The second was made in 1999. The new one is a 2009 model which incorporates the changes made in 2008. The lower weight at the headstock makes the bass more balanced. The tuners are more precision. The neck (with graphite) is more stable. The body and heavier bridge resonate more. The pickups are slightly hotter. I have an active 5 string bass that has more high end sizzle but to my ears the sound of the JB passive single coil pickups sets perfectly in the mix. Strong yet distinct. I have never had so many comments on the sound of a bass before this one. Oh - also you get a cool case. If you add the cost of a good case onto the price of the MIM Jazz Bass, the price difference is not that much. This bass is pricey but you will never regret buying it!

cant beat the real thing

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

I played professional on the circuit in the late 60s and early 70s and owned a fender american precision, which I loved to play with but in the back of my mind I always wanted a fender american jazz bass, then one day I seen one on consignment on the rack at spaceman music store, first I tried a mim fender jazz that was beside it, and wasnt too bad of a feel, then I tried the fender american made jazz and wow the second I put it into my hands I felt the quality and the and differnece in the the feel of the bass, you can just feel that it was a real american made fender guitar and being a bass player, that feeling never goes away when you have a real quality american made guitar in your hands. I had to buy it, there is just no two ways about it, imitations are imitations and the real thing is it I kiss it every time I go to bed lol, when I play a gig that bass is part of me and after playing it awhile it just molds into your hands, the american standard jazz bass is a keeper for me forever, keep up the good work fender. james blanchard ottawa canada

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

Get this bass if you want a good one!
The first time I picked my new ASJB was at Mona Davis Recording Studios in Munich, Germany. It was for a Bluegrass Music project so there were no drums or heavy effects, just the tone of the bass and it was immediatly plain to all that this ASJB was fine. The comments from other musicians and producers present reinforced what I myself was feeling, 'this bass has the unique distinction of being perfect for my needs, I like it in every way'.

A must have !

By Darrenandsarah123

from Southern Indiana

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

I recieved this bass two days ago. I got the sunburst with maple fretboard. It really does look and sound amazing. I have been playing a mexican standard jazz for the last six years and trust me, there's a big difference. The american series is better in every way. The neck is so smooth and easy to play. The new bridge makes a big difference. It's so much better. Being able to run the strings through the body is great. This is as good as it gets as far as jazz bass's are concerned. The case it comes with is really nice too. I did change the strings when I got it. I put on some DR high beams and it sounds great. I also had to lower the action and adjust the intonation but thats normal. The only reason I gave it a 4.5 on value is because I don't really agree with the Fender price increase. But if you can afford it, you gotta go for it. Once you have it, you wont regret it.

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

I bought one of these basses a few days ago and all I can say is, "Holy Crap". I have been using a Spector for the last four years and thought it was time get a new axe. This bass is incredible. I got the Sunburst which is beautiful. The bass sounds unbelievable. With both volumes and the tone all the way up you get an unbelievably good slap tone. With the bridge pickup down you get a great P-Bass moan and with the tone down you can get that vintage 60's Jazz bass tone. This bass is a dream. Also the new hardware is great and the finish on the neck is like silk. This bass is one of the greatest things to ever happen to me. I'm bringing it with me to Berklee College of Music this Fall!

Comments about Fender American Standard Jazz Bass:

I played one of these at my Fender dealer today, and to tell the truth, I don't think it's worth the money. The Mexican Jazz Bass played better than this one, and it was set up better. One of the volume switches on the American was put on crooked. Now if I was paying THAT MUCH I defintely wouldn't want anything messed up. So come on, Fender could lower the price....
