Comments about Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass:
Had this bass about a week now. Bass I recieved needed minor set up (truss 1/2 turn, had too much relief for my liking and lower string height slightly, re-adjust intonation). Bought the White Chrome Pearl, to me this bass looks more grey, when I put it next to an Olympic White bass. Paint job is beautiful with all the little sparkles in it. Definitly a nice color. This bass is made in Mexico, same as the standard series but to me it has some nice upgrades. The Himass bridge is excellent upgrade. The pickups on this bass are extremely hot. These are not standard typical type P-Pickups.
Quality: To me, same as standard series made in mexico but like I said with upgrades.
Playability: After set up is excellent as all my fenders are set up about the same. Not to high and not to low----no fret buzz. Bass has a jazz neck with the modern C shape, feels exactly the same as my 2011 Fender Standard Jazz bass.
Strings: I like the stock strings after the ring is worked out( usually about 2 weeks) that comes on this bass and use them on my standard Jazz as well. Give them a chance, most people are quick to change them out, once the ring is worked out this strings sound real nice and cut through the mix well.
Pickups: These babies are HOT, they have a nice growl. When I first plugged this bass in I thought it was active because the pickups were so hot. This bass has a wide variety of tones and many options. If you play just off the neck pickup it sounds similar to a P-Bass. When you just play off the bridge it sounds similar to a Jazz Bass. Combined you have pure thunder. I would call this a Jazz bass on steroids.
Overall impression: This is definitly one to add to your arsenal. I really love the tone options from this bass. The reason I bought this was because I love the sound of the P-Bass and the comfort of of a Jazz neck. What I got was a bonus. The ability to have the P-type tone with options of a growly Jazz sound. I am really enjoying this bass and would highly recommend this bass to someone looking for something different or who is tossed up between getting a P or J bass. You will not regret getting this bass. Its certainly a keeper.

Comments about Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass:
For starters I would like to take my hat off to Musician's Friend for their great prices and customer service. I received this bass a day earlier than I was told and it was less than it was in a local music store.
As for the bass, it is everything you would expect from Fender. Great look, great workmnship and great sound. I bought the black version and the finish is flawless. BTW, you do need to remove the protective plastic film on the pick guard.
I have had this bass for about a month now and I am still "tweeking" it. The action is a little higher than I like, but I expected that.
For the price of this bass, you can't go wrong. I can't see how anyone could have a complaint about this instrument.
Comments about Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass:
I couldn't be happier with my bass. Sure, the pickups will eventually be replaced with some active ones, but the stock ones sound great. Good solid feel, well put together... (theres no such thing as laquer on a pick guard, once again, peel the protective coating off) and a beautiful white pearl finish. I love it.
This is overall a great instrument, a real steal for the price. Before I go any further, I would like to point out to that there is no such thing as "laquer" on a pick guard. Fender puts a protective coating over the plastic. peel it off and you will be amazed. All I have to say is... WOW. and moving on. Great sustain, good solid feel, fast neck, and well balanced, too.
very well put together, Fender does it again.
You get Jazz bass body and feel with P bass pickups. Can we say best of both worlds?
Comments about Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass:
I give this a nine due to the finish on the pickguard and the "crappy" strings it comes with. I'm putting D'addario flatwounds on these this week - can't wait!
Nice and basic, you can pull a variety of tones out of this little bass. The neck is super sweet and fast. I can't even bring myself to pick up my 5 string Ibanez since I purchased this bass.
I was disappointed that the lacquer was coming off the pickguard on two spots. The neck is beautiful and solid, as is the body. I bought the chrome peral version, the finish is gorgeous - just downright perfect.
This bass is definitely worth the price!
Comments about Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass:
I just got the blacktop for Christmas. It is the first new Fender bass I've owned since 1964. I've played a Precision bass for what seems like forever. I've always like the thinner neck of the Jazz bass and now that I have this one I think I'm in love. The two split pick-ups give this Jazz bass a very unique sound... thick but punchy. You can get the good old P-bass sound plus the snap of the Jazz bass but with a little extra. This bass will get used... a lot!
Comments about Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass:
Just got my Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass in last week. I own several different basses, each with unique features and tones. That's what attracted me to this one.
First, it just looks great: White Chrome Pearl with black pickguard and chrome for the controls. I have always loved the Jazz body and really love the dual P-bass pickups configuration, gives this bass a unique sound. Had a decent setup right out of the box, which is good, since I gigged with it just a couple of hours after receiving it. Great neck action, great tone. I will be lowering the strings just a bit and adjusting the pickup height, but no complaints here. Everybody "tweaks" to some extent.
I recommend this bass to anyone who wants that classic Jazz look, but yet something a little different. Yes, you could swap out the pickups for some that are a little "hotter", but this is a great bass "As Is".
