I've had this bass and gigged out with it for 5 years....it is main bass. I liked it so much, I bought the 4 string version too. I've always been afraid to take my American out to every gig...have had too many stolen in the past. I bought this as a starter 5 string for me (I always played 4) and was blown away. As a former GC employee, I have played a lot of basses in my day and I must say, the Fender V Deluxe is one of the best bases for the 700-800 price range. The active pups are quiet which is good for me because I use a lot of FX. The neck has a nice feel to it. It stays in tune nicely....which is rare for the weather we get here in New England. Compared to the American Deluxe...I find that the MIM's in the upper class have better playability out of the box than the American ones do. The active pup's can be a little hard on an amp. If you don't know what you're doing, I would suggest something with Passive pups until you explore your amp a little more. A little too much gain can make the pups too muddy or tin'y. I found it easy to get the tone I wanted, the power I needed, the neck feel I wanted...this is a solid bass. Any bassist would be stupid to not have one of these in their bag of tricks. For that nu-metal sound with my Dunlop DI W/ Distortion, this thing is a monster! For more funky ska like sound, I dial up the middle position with a little boost in the levels and my BBE on...sounds like Sublime with a heavy boomy bottom. Or, I dial it all the way back to the bridge pup for a hollow almost Green Day sound (which is funny, I think that guy uses a PBass.) If you're not sure whether to get a pbass, jbass, or pjbass...just go for the active JBass. Wicked versitle, strong, won't let you down.

Wow....where do I start ? Arrived with a neck so bowed I could shoot arrows with it. It took three adjustments, (with my own tools because it came without anything) to be playable. Came with Fender "NOISELESS" pups.......lets just say the interference was almost as loud as the signal....and I tried this bass in numerous locations. What can I say ? I wanted to love this bass and it broke my heart.......NOT USEABLE ! and I gig at least three times weekly. Boxed up and shipped back to Musician's Fiend.......very disappointed !

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

for the price you really can't beat this bass. with that being said, there are a couple of beefs. first, the saddles on the bridge were HUGE and made it hard to get really low action the way i like unless I used tapered B AND E strings, so i replaced it with a badass V. also, while this bass does have an excellent sound, i couldn't get that classic jazz growl out of it at first no matter how i set my bass or amp EQs and couldn't figure out why until i researched it and found that the pickups are not actually single coil (hence "noiseless"). so beware.

University Ready

By Jim Barabe

from Amherst & Cape Cod, MA

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

I'm in my third year at UMass Amherst and since coming here in 2007, I have played 6 semesters in the Mass Marimba Band, Hoop Band, and the UMass Drumline's Front Ensemble. The first guitar I played at UMass was a Fender Fretless Jazz Bass (4 string), which was great, but couldn't produce more than a few different textures and barely had enough power to cut through the lower end brass and marimbas. God bless my parents, because for Christmas 2009 I was able to pick this bass out of the Fender lineup and they paid for it. I haven't turned back since. Since getting this bass, I've been able to balance my sound to fit into any ensemble and play any style of music. The active pickups are absolutely clutch! The low b string is one of the best sounding b's that I've ever encountered. There is zero fret buzz and I've only had to set up the neck once since I got it over Christmas break. (In New England you usually have to set your neck up on a monthly basis because of the humidity.) This bass gets played for at least two hours EVERY SINGLE DAY and hasn't begun to show any signs of wear. My only complaint about this bass is that it doesn't come with strap locks, but I can overlook that.If you're serious about playing bass guitar and you think that you're on your way towards a lifetime relationship with music, this guitar will satisfy your every need.

Awesome 5 String!

By Big E

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

Finally got my MIM Jazz Deluxe V. I've been playing a MIJ Fender Jaguar, which plays awesome, but have wanted another string for quite some time with the same awesome tone as my jag. My new jazz bass is vintage white, and I love the color! I wanted to lick it the first time I saw it because it looks just like vanilla pudding. Besides the great color and finish, you can dial in pretty much any sound you're looking for with the active EQ. I definately recommend this bass to anyone looking for a high quiality 5 string bass with the legendary sound to back it up, and doesn't want to break the bank.

I have a friend who's brother just passed away. His brother was a bass player. I am also a bass player. My friend decided to give me his brothers bass(such an honor) because being a bassist, I would appreciate it. What an incredible instrument! You can easily y tune in a p-bass sound or cut out some of the fullness for some funky stuff! Buy this thing, its worth every penny!

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

Bought this since I was tired of drop-tuning my 4-string basses and also tired of dealing with the morons on Craigslist. I have a 5-string Ibanez (SR305), but its tone is a bit thin for mainstream rock. So, this is the best of both worlds - no more drop tuning, and the tone is predictable jazz bass with the benefit of EQ to shape the tone and get a little more presence. I have a 4-string MIM active jazz, and this is pretty much identical with the addition of the B string.
The setup was perfect - fairly low, for fast action. Finish and hardware were perfect - no flaws, whatsoever, and this was an "open box" purchase. Very satisfied - it does exactly what I need it to, and the price was more than fair.

I purchased this bass guitar 2 months ago and I had it shipped in the US. I am actually from the Philippines. I just got it the other day and all I can say is "Thank you Fender and Musician's Friend" for this awesome bass guitar. My dream bass guitar is the american deluxe but when I played this, I got comfortable with the tonation and feel of the guitar. I love it.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

The first thing i noticed about this bass was how nice the neck feels. It's thin and lets your fingers play fast, good for sweeps and speed runs. It also the pickups can handle the low b string quite well, but can lack a little on the top string. the three band eq is very versitial, and can give you anything from deep bass to barking mids. And i was relly suprised how well this bass sounded when i plugged it straight into a p.a. system. very convienient for me seeing as i play with acoustic bands and hate carrying around an amp.

Comments about Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

i own 3 other bass guitars including a 1975 Fender P. I purchased a Fender Squire 5 string a few months back because I wanted to try playing a 5er. It is a really nice guitar, i liked it so much I decided to add a 2nd 5er to my collection. This plays great, its a nice looking guitar and sounds good as well. It's top notch craftsmanship and has very high quality hardware. I bought mine as blemished, saved around 250 and there is nothing at all I can find wrong.

I use this bass to play several different styles of music. It does not disappoint me in any way. It is my third 5 string bass, the other two being G&L basses. Great value for the money. The finish does not disappoint, either. The neck is a bit wider than the G&L basses, but I consider that to be the difference between brands. All in all it delivers in spades. Love it.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

First off, I had to return the first bass that MF sent me because it was unplayable. You could slide a #2 pencil under the strings without it touching the strings or the fret board. I even took it to an "Authorized Fender Service Center" to see if they could adjust the neck. They refused to adjust because in their words, "That neck is 'twisted' and can't be fixed". They offered to order a new neck from Fender, but I decided just to exchange it for another one. MF has the best customer service department around, so they happily accepted my return and sent me a new one.

The second bass arrived and was much better than the first. The strings were still a little high, but within Fender's specified tolerances. I play a lot of slap bass with hammer-on's, pull off's, tapping and the occasional two-handed chord and I like my strings as low as possible. I took the new bass to a Luthier who also happens to be a Fender Authorized Service Tech. He said that he could get the action to where I wanted it by shimming the neck, so I agreed.

Once he finished, OMG this thing is a BEAST!

I have owned or played many basses in my time including American Fenders, Modulus, Lakland, Warwick, Gibson, and Ibanez, but have never played one even remotely close to this one! I believe you could fret a G note on the E string just by breathing on it. It is that good!

The active electronics are outstanding and allow me to dial in great slap tones as well as old-school funk growl. The bass is well balanced, light weight and just has a great overall feel. The Vintage White POPS! I'm in two bands and I swear, every time we play someone compliments the beauty of the bass.

Quit thinking about it and JUST GET IT! But make sure you call in your order and ask for a discount. I saved a TON of money by doing just that!

        I LOVE it!

Bought this 5-string active deluxe bass for my 11 yr old son. He had a G&L 4 string which he never put down. Now he won't put down this guitar which through both a Fender Rumble and Line 6 Lowdown 300, sounds as beutiful as it looks. The action is low and he easily moves up and down the fret board. The Cherry Red is beautiful on stage from where we watch him play. For the price, its just a very good value. I would also suggest getting a hard case to protect these fine investments.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

I was looking for a quality inexpensive 5 string bass with active electronics for recording, and as I am primarily a Fender Stratocaster player I leaned towards a Fender. I had a Hamer 5 string with a 2Tek bridge and it weighted a ton. For the price I was expecting decent playing, decent sounding instrument, like most other Mexican Fender products but this thing has turned out to be a real winner. When I first got it the action was a little high. The electronics and pickup combination is amzing. I can make it sound like anything. The neck is very comfortable. I don't have big hands but I have no problems playing it. Like I said at first I was a little skeptical but once I got it adjusted and got familiar with the controls I love it. This is a great buy period.

The active electronics allow you to shape and make your own personal sound. I think i will be investing in some new jazz bass pickups but other then that I love it.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

There is not a tone you can't achieve with these pickups, combined with the 3 band EQ. This is one of the best all around basses I've ever owned. I started playing 12 years ago. Now I run a studio and wanted a good bass for in house sessions and versatility was paramount. The active pickups and eq really give it punch but also make it easy to sculpt to the song. This is a great bass to have that will cover alot of ground.

I bought this 5 months ago and have been using it steadily at rehearsals and gigs. I play Funk, Reggae, Classic Rock, Doom Metal, Salsa,... you name it. This bass handles it all pretty well; it is kind of "clean" sounding, so not the best for death metal. But with alteration, this bass could do anything and would look great! That's really why I got it, the sunburst with the Pao Ferro fret board is just so beautiful. I am about to change out the pickups because I feel they are too weak and they have no grit, but that's really just my preferance. This bass is a great addition to any working musicians arsenal.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

This bass is pretty much amazing it gets everything done from metal to jazz really well. I love the amount of tones ou can get with this bass just by messin with pickup combinations and such. Ive owned it for over a year done many a show with it use it for pretty much everything its my main bass and Im yet to have problems with it. Its also great for slapping you get a really trebly poppy tone with it especially with the bridge pickup. The one thing I especially love about it is the 5th string sounds great ive had a lot of 5 strings were the 5th string just sounds muddy and distorted through the pickups but with this bass it sounds clear and amazing. I highly recommend this bass.
