I've had this bass and gigged out with it for 5 years....it is main bass. I liked it so much, I bought the 4 string version too. I've always been afraid to take my American out to every gig...have had too many stolen in the past. I bought this as a starter 5 string for me (I always played 4) and was blown away. As a former GC employee, I have played a lot of basses in my day and I must say, the Fender V Deluxe is one of the best bases for the 700-800 price range. The active pups are quiet which is good for me because I use a lot of FX. The neck has a nice feel to it. It stays in tune nicely....which is rare for the weather we get here in New England. Compared to the American Deluxe...I find that the MIM's in the upper class have better playability out of the box than the American ones do. The active pup's can be a little hard on an amp. If you don't know what you're doing, I would suggest something with Passive pups until you explore your amp a little more. A little too much gain can make the pups too muddy or tin'y. I found it easy to get the tone I wanted, the power I needed, the neck feel I wanted...this is a solid bass. Any bassist would be stupid to not have one of these in their bag of tricks. For that nu-metal sound with my Dunlop DI W/ Distortion, this thing is a monster! For more funky ska like sound, I dial up the middle position with a little boost in the levels and my BBE on...sounds like Sublime with a heavy boomy bottom. Or, I dial it all the way back to the bridge pup for a hollow almost Green Day sound (which is funny, I think that guy uses a PBass.) If you're not sure whether to get a pbass, jbass, or pjbass...just go for the active JBass. Wicked versitle, strong, won't let you down.

The Fender Deluxe Active Jazz 5 string's tone on is decent. It is a fairly versatile bass. I used one for Rock, Country, Gospel, and Pop styles. It's Mexican made so you do have to be somewhat wary of construction flaws. The Mexican Fenders are hit and miss when it comes to quality. I had a problem with the small crack in the back of the headstock at the B string's tuner. Further review of these basses showed me that the 3 others I came across also had the same defect. For the $700 price tag there are in my opinion better basses to look into. The Lakland 55-01 is a good example. However, if you're looking for a reliable backup bass this one will suit your needs well.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

Have wanted move up to 5-string for the experience. This MIM Fender was the way to do it. Arrived in perfect condition and exceeding my expectations for construction, beauty, and hardware. An instrument worthy of the Fender name. If you are a 4-string picker, you'll need some time to get acclimated. If you are a Fender J 4-string lover like me, you'll need to play around with the EQ to find your sound. Be patient, it's in there. Great pickups too. I think this bass is an incredible value!!!

Only one word of caution and it has nothing to do with this instrument. Depending on your amp and speakers, you might notice a slightly muddy sound from the B-string, compared to the others. This has more to do with the frequencies/harmonics that your amp and/or speakers can cleanly handle. Go back to EQ. That can help a bit; just won't change the underlying reason. Quality gear is important.

I have several quality basses, some that'll I'll keep forever. This is one of them.

Comments about Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

i own 3 other bass guitars including a 1975 Fender P. I purchased a Fender Squire 5 string a few months back because I wanted to try playing a 5er. It is a really nice guitar, i liked it so much I decided to add a 2nd 5er to my collection. This plays great, its a nice looking guitar and sounds good as well. It's top notch craftsmanship and has very high quality hardware. I bought mine as blemished, saved around 250 and there is nothing at all I can find wrong.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

I use this bass to play several different styles of music. It does not disappoint me in any way. It is my third 5 string bass, the other two being G&L basses. Great value for the money. The finish does not disappoint, either. The neck is a bit wider than the G&L basses, but I consider that to be the difference between brands. All in all it delivers in spades. Love it.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

Bought this since I was tired of drop-tuning my 4-string basses and also tired of dealing with the morons on Craigslist. I have a 5-string Ibanez (SR305), but its tone is a bit thin for mainstream rock. So, this is the best of both worlds - no more drop tuning, and the tone is predictable jazz bass with the benefit of EQ to shape the tone and get a little more presence. I have a 4-string MIM active jazz, and this is pretty much identical with the addition of the B string.
The setup was perfect - fairly low, for fast action. Finish and hardware were perfect - no flaws, whatsoever, and this was an "open box" purchase. Very satisfied - it does exactly what I need it to, and the price was more than fair.

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

First off, I had to return the first bass that MF sent me because it was unplayable. You could slide a #2 pencil under the strings without it touching the strings or the fret board. I even took it to an "Authorized Fender Service Center" to see if they could adjust the neck. They refused to adjust because in their words, "That neck is 'twisted' and can't be fixed". They offered to order a new neck from Fender, but I decided just to exchange it for another one. MF has the best customer service department around, so they happily accepted my return and sent me a new one.

The second bass arrived and was much better than the first. The strings were still a little high, but within Fender's specified tolerances. I play a lot of slap bass with hammer-on's, pull off's, tapping and the occasional two-handed chord and I like my strings as low as possible. I took the new bass to a Luthier who also happens to be a Fender Authorized Service Tech. He said that he could get the action to where I wanted it by shimming the neck, so I agreed.

Once he finished, OMG this thing is a BEAST!

I have owned or played many basses in my time including American Fenders, Modulus, Lakland, Warwick, Gibson, and Ibanez, but have never played one even remotely close to this one! I believe you could fret a G note on the E string just by breathing on it. It is that good!

The active electronics are outstanding and allow me to dial in great slap tones as well as old-school funk growl. The bass is well balanced, light weight and just has a great overall feel. The Vintage White POPS! I'm in two bands and I swear, every time we play someone compliments the beauty of the bass.

Quit thinking about it and JUST GET IT! But make sure you call in your order and ask for a discount. I saved a TON of money by doing just that!

        I LOVE it!

I purchased this bass guitar 2 months ago and I had it shipped in the US. I am actually from the Philippines. I just got it the other day and all I can say is "Thank you Fender and Musician's Friend" for this awesome bass guitar. My dream bass guitar is the american deluxe but when I played this, I got comfortable with the tonation and feel of the guitar. I love it.

          Awesome 5 String!

          By Big E

Comments about Fender Deluxe Active Jazz Bass V:

Finally got my MIM Jazz Deluxe V. I've been playing a MIJ Fender Jaguar, which plays awesome, but have wanted another string for quite some time with the same awesome tone as my jag. My new jazz bass is vintage white, and I love the color! I wanted to lick it the first time I saw it because it looks just like vanilla pudding. Besides the great color and finish, you can dial in pretty much any sound you're looking for with the active EQ. I definately recommend this bass to anyone looking for a high quiality 5 string bass with the legendary sound to back it up, and doesn't want to break the bank.

I have a friend who's brother just passed away. His brother was a bass player. I am also a bass player. My friend decided to give me his brothers bass(such an honor) because being a bassist, I would appreciate it. What an incredible instrument! You can easily y tune in a p-bass sound or cut out some of the fullness for some funky stuff! Buy this thing, its worth every penny!
