A deluxe version of Fender's best-of-both-worlds bass.

A gold vinyl pickguard sets the Deluxe P Bass apart visually, and its satin-finish neck feels worn in from the get-go.

This is one bass that I will never part with. Just due to the fact that it's a Fender and the variety of sounds that one can get from it. It plays very nice, easy on the hands, stays in tune, quality workmanship, beaufiful looking and just sounds fantastic...I would recommend this to anyone.
One more thing. The different sounds that come from the 2 picups is the defining factor for me. You get the jazz bass/bridge sound and you get the p/bass sound, or both together. Buy it, you'll like it.....
The only reason I didn't give it a 10 is because "it's heavy". But I only play 2 days a week so it is really not a BIG problem.
Here's the good part: It sounds wonderful. It has rejuvinatied my sound. I will admit, I haven't had a Fender bass since the 60's. Both Jazz and P. both were stolen from me, dang.....Anyway, back to the subject at hand....It has such a diversity of sounds from low/fat/noattack....to high/pricktheears/slap and anything in between. Of course, this could be a good thing or a bad thing. I find myself piddiling with it for hours just to see what kind of sound I can come up with using amp settings and bass settings. It is truly amazing. Sometimes, as with a p/bass, there is something to say about plugging in and just playing as opposed to trying to find that exact sound. But, someday I will find "that" sound and then I won't have to play with it much....Great bass. Would I buy it again, a resounding "YES"!!!
I think it is a fair price for the bass you get. Unlike my Ch. basses, at least when you turn the knobs, something happens on a gradual scale as opposed to nothing then all of a sudden something (those who have Ch basses know what I mean). It is the best bass I own, and the most expensive. Can't afford $2000 basses......I'm a retired working man, worked hard all my life, and I'll keep on workin....as long as these 2 hands are fit to use.....drink a lil beer in a tavern, cry a little bit of these workin man blues....

I have played pro for a long time. I must say that I agree with the other positive reviews. It is a great bass for the price. This thing definitely rivals more expensive basses in sound and quality. I got this as a backup for a much more expensive American-made bass. It came set up well and with no flaws in the finish(black with gold pickguard). Used it to record the day after I got it and it sounded great. The gig bag should be replaced with something better, though.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

Looks great, combo of jazz neck, p bass body, p& j pickups, noiseless, unbeatable. I have many basses including a new USA jazz bass and USA p bass and this is the one I reach for most. It can sound more like a p bass, more like a j bass than either of the ' real' ones, yet has a voice of its own. I cranked the truss and lowered the bridge and it out plays anything. The combo of active and noiseless on the pj pickups gives you all you will ever need. I got the pearl w maple and its a looker too.

I had one quality issue, one of the clover tuners arrived damaged like it got twisted while being spun at the factory but it wasn't too noticeable and everything else was so good I decided not to send it back. Purely cosmetic did not affect operation.

Best deal on a bass period, and a great instrument for any price.

You need one.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I got this bass to play on tour.
I was thrilled with it right away.
It has a great feel and real nice tone.
The Fender Active electronics are a quality package. I prefer this pickup system to their passive ones. I choose the bass because of the Active PU and the uncluttered picking area. I am a finger player and like to strum and bash as well. The clear picking area allows this without me hurting my hands or damaging the pus. The blond neck gives easy visibility for quick neck position locating while playing very fast moving music and jumping all over the place. I have a 5 Sting active jazz 5 that I have been playing since 1998 and like it quite a bit. This instrument s similar and allows me to play a four string P Bass w/o having to reconfigure my processing. I played it as my primary instrument in the 2013 tour season and loved it. I changed the batteries pretty frequently when we were playing shows, but the pickups seem to perform fine one battery for a long time. I never had to change them for rehearsals. I just didn't want an equipment failure in front of 50000 people. I totally recommend this bass. It's a wonderful instrument.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

Overall, I am glad I bought this guitar!! I actually bought it as a backup to my Standard, but this has become the primary beater!! A friend who is also a professional bassist (And very picky!!) also loves this guitar.... My only complaint is the gold plastic pickguard... looks ultra cheap! If it was Gold annodized, I would have liked it way more, and it would have stayed, but it had to go. Also the bridge could be a bit more "Hi Mass" but those are a bit nit-pickey things... My only other regret is I wish I got the maple neck, but I messed that one up... I like this guitar a LOT!! It plays great, looks fantastic, sounds awesome, and is very comfortable to play!! The guitar is not too heavy, not too light... you know you have a nice piece of timber in your hands! The Precision body with the JAzz neck is definitely the best of both worlds!!
This is a great instrument!! Very versitile.... I have 2 P Basses, one Standard and this Special Deluxe. It's full of tone and plays like butter!! The Jazz neck is fantastic!! The active pickups are great, too!! Noiseless J pickup in the neck position.... I have made a few changes like upgraded the bridge to a Babicz, which I highly reccomend, as it beefs it up a bit and looks much better... (Even tho I love fender basses, I hate the bridges... wicked cheap) I also swapped out the gold plastic pickguard, as I thought it was ugly... My guitar is the Blizzard Pearl, so I went with Tortoise guard.. Since there's 4 holes required, I had to drill, and they don't all match, but it looks good to me. I also added strap locks and a thumb rest, which is solid brass, and it looks great, but I have cut my finger on it several times, and bled all over the guitar, but, hey!! That's rock and roll!!
Well built!! Great action!! Needed very little extra set up, to make it right!! I have a heavy right hand, and so far, after many gigs, it's still going strong!!
Fender did it again! The value is fantastic.... Personally, I don't think there's a better "bang for the buck" guitar, out there!! There's a wide range of tones to be had, from this beast, so just keep twisting the knobs, and you WILL find the one you're looking for.... I will continue beating the crap out of it for many years to come!

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

Since I am not a professional, I don't see myself ever needing to buy another bass. This has everything I could need: smaller neck profile, smaller precision bass body, active electronics, and the PJ configuration to get a nice variety of tones. I've owned a couple of other fender models in the past, and this is the best one yet in terms of playability, craftsmanship, and tone. Not to mention, the action was absolutely perfect out of the box. I will warn that the navy blue finish is much darker than what is displayed online, but it is beautiful and unique in person. In particular, it almost looks black unless there is good lighting showing off its blue metallic flake. Overall, I would highly recommend this bass for people interested in a variety of genres (funk, jazz, rock, metal, country, etc.) because it can accomplish it all. I would also like to thank musicians friend for their outstanding customer service. You all never disappoint!

I own this bass. I love this bass. Buy this bass. The active pick-ups sound amazing. Incredibly versatile array of sounds are possible just from the tone & EQ controls & different combinations of the 2 different pickups. Feels & looks great. Slightly on the heavy side, but I've played much heavier too. The frets protrude just a tad on the sides of the necks, but easy enough to file down (carefully! - put tape on each side of fret!). I was told by a MF operator that it's "made in Mexico w/ American parts". I think it plays, looks & sounds better than most American P Basses I've played & it's much easier on your wallet.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

Purchased in 04, before Fender installed active pickups; it's a white one w rosewood fingerboard. Changed the pick guard to tortoise shell. Though I'm a non-pro (perform at coffee shops, fests, etc, about once a month) I am a steady jammer and have played it almost daily.

Two glorious things: the smaller Jazz neck and the pickup choice. It feels like I have 2 basses as I switch between and blend the J and P sounds. Nor is the body too weighty.

Across time I have played it through an SWR, an Eden Nemesis and today's amazing GK MB 210 with neodymium speakers.

      Highly recommended.

i got this bass on friday, thoguh ordering it online without having tried it i was a bit skeptical, but i was pleasantly suprised. The strings are still new so i will wait for their ratteling to fade. i can get a good rock sound and a good slap sound. once the strings age i'll be able to get a good upright sound to. i warn you though if you get this bass, it will be usless through a tiny amp, so get a good one along with it. also i wish in the back instead of a boost knobs there was a tone knob, because if you turn it all the way off the basses sound becomes usless.

I got the black/maple model and then installed a Babicz Full Contact bridge, GREAT upgrade !! I never used this playing out, only recording and no complaints. Its tonal range is amazing, I can get from smooth walking lines to gut thumping chords and anywhere in between. I'm a guitarist, not a bassist but for the money this is really a high performer and I'd recommend this. Controls are easy but maybe not for a beginner and after a quick set up even I sound like a true bassist.

I've tryed the MIJ Aerodyne both Jazz and precision, MIM Jazz, MIA American precision.
This bass is perfect. Well balanced, jazz neck with 1.5 nut. It can give you room feeling sub harmonics or the the smooth tone of jazz. I added a High mass bass bridge,a precision and jazz chrome pickup cover for looks. Then I discovered how much better the tone and sustain worked using pickup covers. It looks awesome and sounds great.
I have the blizzard pearl with rosewood neck. I also use Thomastik jf364 flatwound strings. Its one great bass.

I am a professional guitar player who sometimes doubles on bass and needed a reasonably priced bass to use without breaking the bank. This bass is easy to play with the J-Neck, has many different sounds based on the Jazz/Precision pickups. Right now I'm playing it through an old Peavey TNT 100 (45 watts), but plan to get a Hartke LH 1000/with Hydrive 4-10 cabinet. Can't imagine how great it's going to sound with the new rig if it sounds this good on the old Peavey.

As with a few others, this is my first bass. I just found a mint '08 model in Red and a maple neck. The thing that caught my eye was that it had the Badass II installed, the receipt for the install and setup was in the case, BINGO!
The combination of the playability, bridge improvement in sustain and tone, balance and 3 band EQ is pretty much an amazing set of features at a great price. $360 "down here at the pawn shopppp!"
I have to give it an 8 because the fret edges were rough. I hand dressed the edges in all of 10 minutes and it was smooth as an American neck. No sweat, just not perfect.
Look at all the posts that start with "Wow."

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I got the Fender P-Bass deluxe when I was looking to step up from my squier jazz I've had for years now. I got it through good ol' CL and was really surprised at how good it really was. I intially was looking for just aP-Bass set up but a guy offered to sell this to me and I thought I'd go for it. I had no clue the thing was an active bass when I got it (stupid me, yes) but I've decided I really love the active sound and mostly control. I play through an ampeg micro svt through a fender 1970 something 2x15 bassman and it's quite a powerhouse. Really solid construction and a super good feel to it, nothing I feel like I need to add or change. I was a little concerned at first that the tone knob was missing but I found I love being able to dial in a variety of tones with preamp stuff. I also love the neck and how it feels size-wise. It's also really pretty looking, I got red with maple neck. Overall for a random find I'd say it was a very good investment and I would deffintely buy another one if this one died or something.
Love the active preamp, you can dial in most any tone you need
Solid construction, I bought mine off of CL so it was fairly used but nothing wrong with it, still solid
I bought mine used so I deffintely loved the price on it but I wouldn't mind paying full price for it. I feel very fortunate to get it at the price I did

Fantastic instrument! As another reviewer said, this thing is a "tone monster." Beautiful body and neck design, not too heavy or cumbersome, and incredibly versatile sounds. The price is also a total bargain. I am in love with this thing.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

Been looking for a P/J to upgrade my Indonesian Squier Precision P/J which has awesome tone but soft weak tempermental maple neck. Very impressed with this Mexican P/J with active electronics -- not my 75P but as close as it gets. First axe I've bought in a very long time that didn't need extensive setup or adjustment straight out of the box. The neck is straight and hard solid maple and the frets are clean and polished. Action is set precisely to spec (with sufficient room for style adjustments without fret buzz) and the intonation is dead on all the way up. Black finish is deep and flawless. The gold pickguard is ugly and there doesn't appear to be many aftermarket alternatives for this particular model (4 controls, P pickguard but J neck). The neck Precision split pickup is a classic alnico and sounds awesome. The bridge jazz pickup is a "noiseless" and it appears someone took it a little too literally -- it has very weak flat output and you need to adjust the volume to compensate whenever you pan the pickups. Not sure what the "mid" pan is supposed to add tonewise and it appears to change the presence more than the tone. Still, a lot of flexibility and control for whatever tone you want. I have a G&L Tribute L2000 (Indonesia) with 18V electronics and the vintage P baseball bat neck, which is probably a very comparable model. The G&L has a more sensible controls and a heavier piece of maple for the neck but has required constant tweaking to eliminate fret buzz and playability issues (after 6 months it has aged out and is finally where it needs to be and stays there). Quality of the Fender as well as the tone is clearly superior to the G&L. I'll probably end up changing the strings to 9050ML stainless flats but that is for my playing style and no fault with the tone possibilities from the stock nickel roundwounds. Very nice Fender Bass with a capital F-- the real deal on a beer budget.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

I've purchased this bass two years ago on the basis of nothing more than good reviews. After getting this bass, i did not regret it. first off it is solid as a rock. banged it up a few times and it still kicks butt despite the various scratches. You can get a huge variety of sounds from this wonderful bass. with the right strings (i prefer swing 77 rotosounds). role the bass off halfway and set the pickups selector in the middle, you get a geddy-leeish tone. set the eq almost flat and you can get a tone similar to billy sheehan with a slight lack of attack. The j-pickup sounds good soloed for jaco-esque stuff. for a good blues tone, role the PU selector halfway in between the middle position and p-bass position, and role off treble completely. For a more punkish sound role off the bass halfway with the p-pickup fully on. that's not even scratching the surface of tonal variaties possible. Only complaints i have is that it started buzzing a while ago so it needs to be fixed (no it's not fret buzz), and there's no active/passive switch (p-pickup sounds good, but not quite like a classic precision), but luckily im getting one installed for cheap (if you can't find a cheap way to get the switch installed if desired than get the reggie hamilton, the american imo is not worth the extra 1000). you will not find a better mexican bass in this price.

Comments about Fender Deluxe P Bass Special 4-String Bass:

This is the first bass I've owned I've been playing on it for about 2 years now and I absolutely love it. I've had to tweak parts with the input jack but otherwise its a solid build. The action on the fret board is fantastic better than most basses that I've tried, some much more expensive and innovative. So for any newcomers to bass or experienced musicians this is a go to instrument to add to your arsenal. I've played at several venues consisting of the Fillmore and 9:30 Club and trust me this bass holds its own. Also in regards to the fret buzzing just adjust your bridge until the buzzing stops I added new strings and did that and since then the buzzing has ceased.
