Fender

Newly designed tuners and bridge modernize this classic!

This American Standard Series Precision Bass has a vintage body radius and contour for a classic vibe and feel. The body is rendered in premium alder for optimum tone and sustain. Its rosewood or maple fretboard features detailed fret and nut work. The neck is graphite-reinforced and has rolled edges for a broken-in feel from the get-go. HMV (high-mass vintage) bridge increases sustain, provides punchier tone, beefier looking plates, and 3/8" diameter vintage saddles. String height adjustment screws have nylon patches for a tight fit that won't vibrate loose.

A 12-gauge cold rolled steel plate machined brass backstop increases mass, enhances top end. Socket head intonation screws are engineered for a tighter fit, and are more stable. Features Fender®/Hipshot® tuning keys. They work great and are 30% lighter, minimizing neck dip. Classic 20:1 tuning ratio, cast zinc with aluminum string posts and mounting nuts, and steel clovers. Brass worm gears, steel worm drives.

With a thinner undercoat, the American Standard P Bass body breathes easier and has improved sound (more wood influence). Neck pocket paint buildup has been reduced by 40%, greatly improving the wood to wood connection/reaction.

SKB rectangular-design case, exclusive to Fender, has TSA recognized and accepted locks. Fiberglass reinforced nylon trigger release latching system, indestructible cushioned rubber over-molded handle with flush lock out. Injection molded feet and exclusive arched stacking system.

Features

  • Alder body
  • Graphite-reinforced neck with modern C shape and satin polyurethane finish
  • Rosewood or maple fingerboard with rolled edges
  • 20 medium-jumbo frets
  • Open-back cast machine heads
  • 1 American Precision Bass split single-coil pickup

Refined Super Fender Jazz Bass

| Review By: Eric Bergenn | 10 months, 1 day ago

Features:

This bass screams “refined” being a J-bass that has traditional form but many modern day enhancements; such as the tuners, bridge, paint and pickups.

Quality:

With the new upgrades this bass is definitely a quality instrument. It stays in tune well and sounds really good. You can look at the wood and tell that it is not garbage (the neck in particular.)

The new bridge, pickups and tuners are all like top of the line after  market parts quality, this is where this bass shines as a players/studio bass.

They only thing that I think that needs to be updated on its time tested design would be the neck joint and lower cutaway.

Many companies making "J" basses have a rolled heal and the cutaway is more gradual in thickness (not having such a blocky neck plate/pocket...)

Value:

The bass is a Fender and will retain its value if you so desire to trade it in. The main hardware is all top-notch and the wood is what you would expect from a Fender American.

Overall:

There is still room for improvement and no bass should really earn a "10." For a goto bass it offers clean sound, reliability and the Fender name. If you have the money to purchase this, it is not a bad route to go. I never regret the money I spent to get this bass, I only wish that they would make a five string fretless.

I picked up a 2011 American Standard P-bass a few months ago, and I'm nothing but happy. Having moved from a 1996 American Standard J-bass, I can confidently say that Fender has made massive improvements over the past decade. If you're in the market, you owe it to yourself to see one of the new American models in person. Mine shipped with a gorgeous finish, stable neck, and FLAWLESS craftsmanship, a hundred times better than my '96 Jazz. It also came with a bulletproof case and exceptional case candy - the strap is the most comfortable ever made, hands down. Note: These new P-basses are LIGHT!! And not just a little. You'll be amazed when you pick it up, and I promise you will crap yourself when you feel how this thing resonates with every note. If you don't have one of these, you're making a mistake. The price may seem unreasonable...until you hold it in person.

Nothing Special

I tried these out at the local stores.     I had been playing the same Precision Bass Lyte for many years and felt it was time to get something nicer.     Unfortunately, the American Standard Precision didn't cut it.

It is a decent bass, but compared to my cheaper Japanese counterpart, it sounded dull, lifeless and thin.     Granted, the Japanese one had active pickups with a lot of edge, but even with just the split coils selected it sounded better.     The tuners and hardware were noticeably cheaper and flimsy.     The pots felt like there was virtually no resistance and turned way too easily in my hand.

Compared to my early 90's Squier, with custom pups and pots, the American Standard felt like an overpriced beginners bass.     To make this bass work for me I would have to change the pups and pots at least.     But that's more money put into it.

A lot of pros use precision basses, but as per Bass Player magazine, I've never heard of a pro using an American standard.     You'll see them using vintage basses, custom basses, etc.

The deluxe models are MUCH nicer.     If you can afford it, give those a try.     I almost bought one of those, but since I had the cash I went for something else.

That said, I would be happy enough with one of these if I didn't already have something better.

Basically, there are none.     Compared to other designs/basses if you are looking for 'features', this isn't the bass for you.

For the price, it seemed passable.     The pots felt cheap and loose, the tuners/machine heads felt cheap but the other hardware was alright.

Middle of the road.     Possibly a little over priced.
