The best production 5 string bass

By droppinitlow

from Seattle

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

I bought this bass after owning a Lakland 55-02, G@L L2500, and A Music Man stingray 5. The 7 1/4 radius on the fretboard makes a 5 string as playable as my 4 strings. Marcus and Fender really came together on this one! It is the only production bass with this fingerboard radius. Yes you can have a custom bass made by Mike Lull but compare the price, it's not even close.

Sound and Playability beyond the norm

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

I purchased this bass from Musicans Friend in June of last year. I had played the 4 and fell in love with it but when my 5 came in I noticed ALL the differences right away! 1st this thing is an American Bass (the 4 is Japanese), and the fit and finish were PERFECT! Action was a little high when I got it but was totally playable still. A 1/4 turn of the bridge saddles and a 1/8 turn on a truss rod and then it became my dream bass. The playability of this insturment is that of any world class insturment. Plays like a hot knife through butter...smooooooth. Sounds like a vintage jazz wide open with the pre off, turn it on and then you get some of the most beautiful boost a bass can get...this thing is a slapper for sure and also a fantistic finger style bass. I've owned 6 jazz bass's in my past and this one simply smokes all of the others...this is a fantastic bass. Not a buzz on the neck and no fret click either!

Big Sound

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

I bought the Marcus Miller V at the prompting of my best friend who is a great bass player and works and writes with me in my studio. I already have a Fender Sting Model, a Fender Jaguar Bass, a Hofner Deluxe, a '67 Fender Coranado Bass and a '66 Music Master. The 5 string is a bit much for my capability but some of the Bass Players make good use of it on recordings. Needless to say it sounds great. The strings feel a little loosey goosey to me and I get a bit of a buzz on the B if I whack it too hard but none of the real bass players seem to complain about that. All in all I'm glad I have it in the Studio.

Ask me a question

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

After playing a number of 5 string basses I finally got my hands on the mm5. Wow! The sound is incredible My last gigs have been filled with compliments from the whole band on the even tone. Tone and playability is super. The only way to improve the sound that I found was to use DR strings. This is an incredible axe for the money. Thanks Marcus and fender for the research and development. You could purchase a sadowski, mike lull, Smith or other big named makers but for the money, this axe is hard to beat.

This is like no other Fender 5 string!!!!

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

As far as playability is concerned, you really couldn't ask for much more. When I first took it out of the case, I went to work on setting it up and it didn't take long before I was truely amazed. I also own a Schecter Studio 5 and while I love my schecter, I don't think I'll be switching back for quite some time. This is the crem` de la crem of Fender 5 string jazz bases.

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

The best fender money can buy. and look who it pays homeage to! a bass god! even players like wooten say: "i bow to this man" it cuts through but still actually sounds like a bass. warm rich low end. and no low B rattle that you expect from fender fives. it actually sounds good! and the ash really helps when you play a jazz bass. so much lighter. and no tonal sacrifice in return for comfort.

A Different Point of View

By Keeaumoku

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

I bought this bass right here on Musicians' Friend... an 'Aged Natural' one. Visually speaking, I think it is Fender's most beautiful offering. I love the pearl block inlays and the white binding around the neck. While I know of some who do not care for the 'giant' black pick-guard, I do, indeed, like it. I especially preferred the 'natural' finish, as it best illustrates the grain of the ash wood body. I also think the chrome neck pick-up guard is visually appealing, but I found it to get in my way. The contrasting pair of black and 'knurled chrome' knobs are equally appealing, as well as functionally clever.Playability... this bass guitar virtually plays itself... one of the easiest basses I've ever held in my hands over the 31 years I've been playing electric bass guitar. The neck is smooth and FAST... almost guitar-like, and I can play one of those, too.However... I eventually returned my MM-5 back to Musicians' Friend. 'Why' do you ask? I just could not get a tone out of this axe that satisfied me... plain and simple. I have high-quality bass amplification and speakers, so one must rule that possibility out. No matter what I tried, this bass just couldn't please my ear... and, believe me.. I really wanted this axe to work for me. I was heartbroken... Musicians' Friend took it back with no questions asked...

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

I have had this bass for a month now, I must say that I'm not disapointed. I love the unique sound it has, not mention that looks good too. I,m on the same level as Marcus Miller, but I did stand on the same stage he did 9 Apr 06 in Jacksonville, Fl. That sound that come from the mm4 and mm5 string fender very sweet and you can't denie the low price of neather, both under 2 grands, great value for the quality and features. No I'm not Marcus, but at least I can sound like him and not dream like I do.

A Bass Master Piece!

By Big Chuck-VAZAD

from Morrisville,NC

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

This beautiful work of art sounds as good as it looks! The tone is very rich and natural,it sounds like one of those vintage fenders thirty or so years old. The 7.25" radius feels so natural to the hands(ingeneously done). This bass is a musical master piece.

The best 5 string Jazz bass -Period

By Bassdude 002

from Grand Prairie ,Texas

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

I have tried tons of 5 string Jazz basses, Lakeland, Fender Deluxe(I own a 4 string one,It's great) Fender FMT.This bass Kills them all. It sounds Vintage yet modern at the same time. Because of the passive Fender pickups. It feels better than any bass right out of the case(which is cool too) I got the sunburst one. It is flawless Beautiful! It plays fast and easy. I highly recomend it. There is a world of difference between this bass and the 4 string MM. Great job Fender!

Comments about Fender Marcus Miller Jazz Bass V:

I bought the one that Fender displayed at the NAMM 2006 show. Absolutely the BEST playing fiver I have ever layed my hands on. Chock full of the features that I like. I did not buy it to sound like Marcus, I don't like it's tone. I like it's playability. I will have to change/eliminate the preamp. It's not for me. I prefer passive, but in passive mode, it still doesn't sound good IMO. Worth the price for the playability.
