Comments about Fender Modern Player Jazz Bass V:

Let me start by saying I feel I'm a pretty fair reviewer. You can read my review on the Squier VM Precision Bass V. I was harsh in places, but came around to saying it was a good bass for the money. I sold that Squier to buy this bass. Big mistake.

First, pulling it out of the box, I was struck by how cheap it looked. The finish is flat satin, and it looked like brown stain with the edges spray painted black. The wood under the stain was ugly - I had that in my Squier too, but expected more from a Fender. The pickguard looks like a piece of plastic from a car bumper. It wasn't covered in plastic film, and it was marred and scratched. I was disappointed, but decided it would get that way eventually no matter what. I examined it, didn't see any other glaring defects, so started setting it up.

The factory setup was a joke. The bridge saddles were WAY off (even angled the wrong direction), the pickups were not even close to an acceptable height and the nut had the strings way too high. I went to work, and got that all fixed. In adjusting the pickups, 2 screws were so tight the heads started to strip, and I have good quality tools. I started to string it with flatwounds (Chromes), and the B string wouldn't fit through the hole in the bridge. I removed the silk from the string, turned it various ways, vaselined it, and finally got it mostly in. I figured it would seat eventually with string tension. Once I got the strings on, and the saddle height roughed in, I started to fine tune the action. There is fret buzz coming from the 17th or 18th fret across the fretboard. Most likely a high fret. I can have that fixed, but it will potentially cost me quite a bit to level the frets. I cranked the saddles up for the time being to eliminate the buzz. Trying to find a positive - the truss rod didn't need adjustment.

Frustrated and disappointed, I was hoping that the sound would make it all better. I plugged it in, and the sound was great - until I moved and the sound stopped. The input jack is intermittent - that needs to be replaced.

I'm a weekend warrior, and working guy with a house and a family. I have to scrimp and save, sell other equipment, and really sacrifice to buy a new bass. MusiciansFriend will probably take it back, but something of this quality should never have made it to my doorstep. The Squier I sold to buy this was much higher quality than this Fender Modern Player Jazz. I have 4 or 5 hours into this bass already, and it will take another 1 or 2 if I have to pull off the new strings (if I can even get that B string out), put the old strings back on, repackage it, and send it back.

Just think if I was a new player, didn't know any better, received this, and tried to play it? A great way to chase away new blood.

Maybe I got a lemon, and maybe you'll get a great one. But folks, I'd seriously recommend you keep looking and walk away from this bass.

Now you may be wondering after reading all this, why I gave it 2 stars instead of 1? The 10 seconds or so I was able to play it, the sound was great.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Jazz Bass V:

This bass was better than I expected. The quality, feel of the bass and control pots are exceptional. The Modern Player is an affordable 5 string bass that is available to bass players like me. I am not a professional musician but I know quality when I hear and play this bass.
