I need to let you know how this thing sounds. Imagine that it's daddy was a P bass and momma was a Jazz. Being humbuckers, it looses some of the sweet, airy "bell" tones of the Jazz bass. What it gains is the low-mid "whump" of a P bass while retaining the tonal characteristics of the Jazz - a sweet compromise indeed.
One note on tone: The pickups are better than my original impression led me to believe. They are very sensitive to height adjustment and need to be in their "sweet spot" to get the best out of them. Once I found that spot they really came alive!
Here's the bottom line: Fantastic deal for an outstanding bass - GET IT!
Basic Jazz Bass features with the exception of humbucking double jazz pickups. Vol, Vol, Tone and no coil tap (two conductor wires).
I've been playng bass since 1973 and have seen, especially in the last ten years, an amazing elevation in the quality of instruments at lower price points. Not so many years back, one would have had to spend quite a bit more to acquire a bass of this quality. Solid materials, flawless finishing, very nice electronics and hardware - it's all there.
This is a ton of bass for very little dough. Outstanding value. There is no compelling reason to spend any more.

I like what they're doing with Squire basses recently; I often felt that if they only had that 'Fender' sticker on it, I'd be happy playing many of them... but then, they go for a lot cheaper, too! After trying this bass, I'm not so sure.

So, this bass isnt BAD, really - the looks of it are fine. But here's my deal: I bought a Blacktop P bass last year, and I like it a lot - the only thing I wished it had the J bass' slimmer neck. So, when they came out with the Player's J bass, I was like 'YES!', and I ordered one expecting the same quality. After noticing the differences in the finish and neck, I played it and didnt hear the snap and boom I expected. My friend said, 'oh, it's made in China, huh?', and I didnt believe it but yes, that's the case. Then I thought maybe it was just me, not hearing the sound, but then I compared it back to back with the Blacktop P bass (also dual humbuck-equipped), it definitely sounded weaker! Part of it may be due to the pickup placement - the P has both mounted a little closer to the bridge (and the bridge is heavyer, with steel saddles and thicker metal) - but when I looked closely, the pickups are NOT the same; the Player's Jazz defintely are not as nice! This is a Squire-quality bass with a Fender decal on it.

I love the Fender Jazz neck and dual-pickup design, and this bass is ok... but while the humbucks are quieter, these particular pickups are not as high-output as the Mexican Blacktop Precision, and you when you subtract that from trading out the single-coil snap and clarity of even a standard J bass..... I was not really happy with this purchase. I'm keeping it, but I'm sure I'll be playing the Blacktop or my '70's reissue a lot more often!
Not bad looking, I got the transparent black and the finish is fine. The neck has no 'skunk stripe', the yellowish 'vintage' look, nice gloss. The neck plate is stamped 'Fender' - a nice touch. Got the little plastic control knobs but those are standard. Brass saddles on a sturdy bridge.

The humbucks are just ok; the ones on mine are not great, the tone is kind of muddy. See below.
The appearance is pretty good, no cosmetic flaws really. But after playing and looking at it closely, this is a 'made in china' bass, and compares more to Squires than even a Mexican Fender. The pick-ups, tuners, and bridge are all slightly-less-good than the Mexican Blacktop. Tonight was cold, but to me it seemed like it didnt stay in tune all that well, either.
For the same price, the blacktop P bass is a MUCH better deal. see below

Comments about Fender Modern Player Jazz Electric Bass Guitar:

This Fender Modern Jazz Bass is like an American Made Jazz bass on Steroids! I cannot believe you can get so much Bass for this money. I am a long time guitarist and vocalist who has always had a love for the bass. Lately I have a newfound love for this instrument and love playing bass. I am a Musicians Institute graduate for both guitar and vocals and now applying some of this experience to the bass has made it really fun. Reluctant to buy such an inexpensive bass as I already have a cheaper Yamaha, I decided to take a chance. Musicians Friend is simply the best and if I didn't like it, I know I can just return. That being said...WOW!! This bass is way more than I ever expected. With the pickup configuration you can create just about any sound you want. Very slight adjustments to the volume control on either pickup makes an incredible difference!! I have found I set them both at about 3/4 volume and if I boost either one just a little, my variation of tone is endless not to mention a tone adjustment. Talk about quiet!!! when you aren't playing NO Buzz whatsoever!! I mean library quiet. Sometimes I forget it is even on. Anyone looking for a great bass especially for this kind of money, GO GET THIS!! You will be amazed. Take it to a gig, quiet! If it gets destroyed by a drunken fool, you're not out thousands. All in all I can say nothing bad about this purchase. Minor adjustments on the truss and action and smooth as silk, plays like butter, no fret buzz at all. The finish is remarkable! Bass is beautiful. So in conclusion for a "pre modded Jazz Bass" right out of the box, you simply Cant go wrong. As far as Musicians friend, forget about it! They are simply the best. Shout out to Zack at x9339. He is just great! BUY IT!!

Bridge and neck adjustments needed out of the box.
Fret buzz and bridge rattle. A little too much bow in the neck. Plays OK, might feel better about it once adjustments are done.

Upon first arrival, the bass was totally distroyed in shipment. Broken in half! Called MFI and they immediatly sent me a new one. I sent the broken one back. The new one came in very good shape. Very happy with the new one. Used mainly for studio recording.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Jazz Electric Bass Guitar:

I used an Ibanez Soundgear bass before buying this one. The Fender Modern Player Jazz sounds so much better and is easier to play. It had a good setup right out of the box. Looks great. I can't find any blemishes in the finish.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Jazz Electric Bass Guitar:

I bought this bass about 5 months ago and its seen many stages since then. I play bass guitar for the marching band and it has stood the test of being hauled with a truckload of percussion instruments. It has a great sound for the price. The pickups aren't the best, but they are great for what I need to do. The bridge came a little loose, but nothing an allen wrench can't fix. This is a great bass for the price.

Comments about Fender Modern Player Jazz Electric Bass Guitar:

An inexpensive instrument to bring up to your personal feel and standards. I sanded the neck to a satin (gloss was thick) and now she's fast and sweet . Set-up was poor:intonation off, action ridiculous. Perhaps it's just me but, I like my action low and growling. Why else would you play a Jazz? All in all, a good solid (heavy) instrument, when on sale.

When I wanted to buy my next bass, I wasn't sure what to get. I saw this bass and I knew I had to get it. I've always loved jazz bass's and I've always loved humbuckers so it's the best of both worlds. This bass is very versatile with playing styles. I play this bass with a pick, my fingers, and slapping and they all sound great. The tone on the Modern Player Jazz Bass is amazing and it sounds perfect. If you love good tone this is definitely a bass I would invest in.

I pick up a sunburst one to give to my son when he turns 16 ( he was 6 months at the time ) so I figure I will use it until he is old enough to play, Let me tell you I LOVE THIS BASS, No you are NOT going to get a standard Jazz Bass tone from it due to the pick ups but you will get some GREAT sounds all around, Roll back the bridge pickup and get a GREAT 60's Thump ( A la P Bass ) or roll back the neck pickup and you have a bright punchy sound, The two pickup's together have a great round tone with alot of UMPHHH. No it's NOT a Jazz Bass or a P-Bass tone but if you can only afford 1 bass and need Versatility this is a great choice. The neck has a great feel and I really like the heavey bridge.
