Fender

A short-scale throwback Mustang that plays as fast as it looks.

Players continue to praise the Pawn Shop Series for evoking the more eccentric Fender creations of the mid-'60s to mid-'70s while delivering thoroughly modern sound and quality with a wealth of various Fender elements. New for 2013, the Pawn Shop Series introduces yet another pleasingly unconventional assortment of "guitars that never were but should have been," in which new models take the stage and long-vanished classics return in modern form.

With its racing stripe and short scale (30"), the new Pawn Shop Mustang Bass authentically evokes the original "competition" Mustang Bass of the early 1970s. This time, though, you get the huge bass sound of a single humbucking pickup (the original had a single-coil pickup) and several classic Fender finish options.

Other features include an alder body, "C"-shaped maple neck, 9.5"-radius rosewood fingerboard with 19 medium jumbo frets, four-ply white pearloid pickguard, two Jazz Bass control knobs (volume, tone) and a strings-through-body bridge with four adjustable saddles.

Features

  • Mustang alder body
  • "C" Shape maple neck
  • 19 Medium jumbo frets

  • Fender-Designed humbucking middle pickup

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Electric Bass:

Ordered one of these as a level 1 used. To my surprise it was actually brand new! It came with a decent Fender gig bag as well.

The bass only needed some minor tweaking to my liking as the action was a little higher than I prefer. The short scale does take some getting used to however. The neck plays well, is very fast and the combination of the short scale and lighter gauge strings allows for bending notes quite easily.

The weight of the bass is only slightly lighter than say a P- bass as it is made from solid alder. It should be noted that there is no arm bevel nor belly cut on the body, so the comfort level is a bit lacking there.

The pick up is LOUD! without doubt, this is the loudest bass pick up I have ever experienced! The sound is decent, but emphasizes the lower end noticeably. Some eq adjustments on the amp/ effects were needed to get the higher frequencies more present.

Giving it the live gig test I had to keep the volume on the bass about half way to match the output of my other basses. (it still sounded very nice even at half on the bass!) But, the lack of arm bevel did make a difference. The weight also became somewhat of an issue after a while.

The other aspect of the short scale really was disconcerting as I was used to long scale basses. It took a bit of concentration to adjust to the scale.

In all, not bad for this made in Mexico Mustang. It is a sharp looking instrument, nice finish (white with blue racing stripe and white moto type pick guard.)and the construction is very good.

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Electric Bass:

I had been looking for a mustang for quite some time, and the choice between new ( the only new mustang bass being white) and vintage was a saddening set of choices, I followed this release with great hope and can say it fulfilled my dream and them some. First things first, this bass is LOUD!! I like it better than any P bass I've owned played and find it a serious alternative to my Rick. It took me a while to get used to the 30 inch scale but it has been worth it. I'd also like to say that contrary to the connotations a short scale carries, I am 6'3, have huge hands, and have played bass for over ten years. This bass is fantastic for the sound I aim for. In a guitar, bass, drum trio the mustang fills out the sound with a gorgeous mid range growl.

Comments about Fender Pawn Shop Mustang Electric Bass:

Most people don't realize that short scale basses have some real advantages over 34" scale, and I can't think of any advantages to 'full scale.' Everyone always says, ideal for someone with smaller hands - this isn't too true. For one thing, the size of your hands just doesn't matter, and those who think it does are just begginers that don't know any better. The real advantages are richer harmonic tone, and the ability to bend strings like a guitar. I have big hands, but have no difficulty with the smaller scale. The pickup works great, and I may even leave it in there for a while. The neck is nice and the body is immaculate. If someone stole this, I believe I'd have to get another. It's about time someone made a good short scale bass for a reasonable price!
