The Gibson Limited Run Explorer Electric Bass Guitar responds to requests from bassists around the globe who desire two things from a bass—massive sustain and distinctive looks. It features Gibson's classic body design that was first introduced in 1958 as a bold new electric guitar. Being too futuristic for the times, Gibson abandoned the body shape in 1959. Not until numerous copies had become successful sellers did Gibson resurrect the Explorer design for guitars in 1976.
As a bass, a version of the Explorer was manufactured by Gibson under the banner of Epiphone, but rarely under the Gibson name. Now the wait is over. With a set mahogany neck and all mahogany body, this Explorer bass provides the sustain and clarity of tone that performing bassists seek. Dual humbuckers produce plenty of power and sonic versatility. The body is finished to highlight perfectly the harmonious silhouette of this limited-run bass.

Medium grade craftsmanship here. This instrument really does have the look and feel of a Studio Model. Its a shame too...this bass has one of the nicest full C shape neck profiles I have ever played. Can't get good action without getting horrible overtones from the fretwork.The finish seems a little delicate too. I would give this instrument a solid 7 in its price range.

This bass growls like no other I have ever laid my hands on. I waited a long time to own a Gibson and was not disappointed in quality and sound. It was set up almost perfect and I found no flaws of any kind. I played this through my Orange terror 1000 bass head and a David Eden 410XLT and it sounds like thunder! I play rock and the blues and I couldn't be happier. I haven't touched my Stingray or my Jazz since I got it. The edges of the frets are not as smooth as I'd like them but it's not a big deal at all. Make sure you buy a LONG stand to hang this by the neck. The finish on the back of the body and the neck is very thin and silky smooth and the mahogany body is just a thing of beauty. Very comfortable to play and I guarantee chicks will dig it. LOL I'd also like to add that Guitar Center in Harrisburg, PA has a great staff and were very helpful.

This is a beautiful, and flat out cool looking bass from Gibson USA. The matte tobacco sunburst finish adds a lot of class to the legendary body shape that was hijacked by metal heads in the 80s. Fret work is excellent, but the setup from the factory was poor. Action was high, and the bridge was not intonated at all. Minor points that I took care of myself in probably 15 minutes. Gibson needs to pay more attention to these details, as many novices will pick something like this up and determine that they don't play well. Again, a simple setup got this thing playing great. Balance is unreal. A super comfy and fun bass to play. The sound is what you'd expect from a large mahogany body with TB+ pickups - punchy, growly, and versatile. Tons of sustain! Unfortunately, the funky body shape means you end up with a case that dwarfs anything you've ever seen. Oh well...

This is a good Bass,the electronics are very good.Pick Ups of course are hot since they are t bird ones.The bass was setup good right out of the box,just like any new bass the strings have to stretch a bit then they will stay in tune.I have been playing a bass for 40 years and have played many of them.My favorite will always be a american fender precision or a gibson with t bird pick ups.I have a gibson ripper from the 70s and wont get rid of it cause it has that rock and roll gibson tone.I played the explorer last night at practice and it is sweet and has in your face type of tone.Same as the finish i like it i know why gibson does it with some basses its about tone and letting wood breathe.I am a player I dont get a bass and leave it in the case I got it to play and gig with as all of my basses,this bass is balanced and i like resting my arm on it.I got this one and the flying v as both were great prices for a gibson.If you dont get this bass you will regret it after they are gone as it is a limited run from gibson.And gibson wont tell you how many they made.Awesome bass for the price really glad i did it and also from musicians friend good company they stand by their policies i will buy here again too

Gibson has been paying a LITTLE more attention to bassist lately, having put out several limited editions including the V-bass, Cherry T-Birds, Oversized Les Pauls, etc. As always, Gibson USA comes thru with a solid axe. The tone is phenomenal. The neck feels great. My only complaint is that Gibson (as usual) pays far less attention to the little details. It wouldnt kill them to offer inlays, bindings and better choice of finishes. Overall it is a Great bass. The finish on the vintage sunburst is a bit to be desired, but not as awful as the silverburst. I got the bass at a great price, but would have been peaved had i payed 1500.00 for it. Its a keeper, a great player with monstrous tone and simple controls, but its definitely not a work of art.

I just recently bought this instrument, and I don't know that I could be any happier with it. This thing plays like a dream, as long as you aren't into a super modern cut neck. The neck itself is super smooth, and all the frets are expertly installed. This thing has great tone right out of the box. Put the bridge pickup on with full tone and volume and you get a great modern tone with a pick. Back off the volume and tone and add some neck pickup, and you get a nice full sound, with a bit of modern bite. The neck pickup by itself is very full, without sounding too overblown on the bass end, as some neck pickups tend to get. I suppose if you are into active pickups and having an on-board eq and all that this bass might not be exactly for you, but I found it perfect for me. It sounds really great when you add some distortion to it too!
Absolutely great all around. The humbuckers have a nice tight, agressive sound without being too over the top. This bass is not active, but I prefer passive pickups so this is right up my alley. The only thing I thought that might have been interesting to add would have been some form of coil tapping, since the pickups are humbuckers. The mahogany body and neck have some definite weight, but that really adds to the tone.
Superb. Weight balance is spot on. Every fret on my bass was dressed perfectly smooth, and I could find no cosmetic details wrong at all. The action was great right out of the box, and intonation was spot on as well.
Yes, the cost of this bass is somewhat hefty for someone on a budget, but you are definitely getting what you pay for with this instrument. I don't know that I could get more bang for my buck on any other bass for my style of playing.
