Comments about Gibson Midtown Standard Electric Bass:
As in the other review, the pick-ups do seem a little bit underpowered. Bridge pick-up is pretty much okay, but the neck pick-up is set very low. I did raise the screws from the latter and it helped a bit. But, using the Boss GEB-7 Bass Equalizer, it really fixes things up.
The finish is very good. There were some finishing shortcuts on the neck binding (set in a little bit ... not flush with the neck, Invisible to the public), but it's not a proplem.
Mine is in Pelham Blue and is beautiful. I replaced the roundwounds with D'Addario flatwounds and they sound great. Neck, intonation and most of that stuff is okay. I did give a quarter turn on the truss rod and lowered the bridge a hair. EXCELLENT action.
For the money, very, very nice ... I love mine.

Comments about Gibson Midtown Standard Electric Bass:
My first impression is that this is a sharp-looking, well-made bass guitar. I have the ebony model, which cuts a sharp figure onstage. Overall, the fit & finish were great out of the box. I HIGHLY recommend you immediately change the heavy stock roundwound strings to a lighter guage. The stock strings make the bass feel downright stiff out of the box, so you should definitely switch to a lighter guage set to fairly evaluate this beautiful instrument. Overall, the sound was quite good. Other than the stock strings, I really only have three complaints: 1. The pickups seem a bit on the weak side. I had a 1969 Gibson EB-0 with the "Sidewinder" pickup, and it had monster output. The "TB" pickup on this bass pales in comparison to the Sidewinder of old. I am considering swapping it out for a vintage Sidewinder or a Curtis Novak replacement. The bridge humbucker also seems a little anemic, though the jury is still out. 2. There REALLY should be separate volume controls for both pickups to allow for more tonal variety. Why on earth Gibson decided not to do this is beyond me. I am considering swapping out the 3-way toggle switch for either a blending knob or a separate volume control. 3. The bass is a bit neck-heavy, so Gibson really should have put the neck-side strap button at the neck heel, instead of the upper horn. I think this would improve the balance. All caveats aside, I really do like this bass. I just think Gibson should have put a little more thought into the finer details.
