OVERVIEW

A legendary bass that helps usher Gibson into its 120th year of existence.

During the height of Gibson's original "Golden Era," the company's only bass guitar at the time”the EB0”underwent the same radical transformation as the Les Pauls, which were being redesigned as the now classic SG. It was a bold move and it paid off, bringing Gibson basses to the forefront. Today's SG Standard Bass recreates the classic, dual-pickup version, staying true to the design and specs of the original, including the popular 30" scale length.

The 2014 SG Special bass features solid mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard with the extra-special 120th anniversary banner on the 12th fret, max grip speed knobs, extra large strap button, graph tech nut, 30" scale, T-Bird Plus and vintage-style T-Bird mini pickups, grover shamrock-style tuners, satin finish and 3-point adjustable bridge.

Just received my own Gibson SG Special Bass from Musicians Friend today and have been happily playing it for the last couple of hours. So far, I am very impressed with it's ease of playing and classic design. I usually use flat wound strings on my basses instead of the supplied round wounds but I think in this case I will just go with the strings that came on it for a while. The bass was set up well and darned near in tune right our of the box. I ordered it online on Monday morning and received it Thursday morning with free shipping from Musicians Friend.

I particularly like the 2 different humbucker pickups which give you quite a range of tones with each one having it's own volume control along with the master tone knob controlling both. And, I really like the satin (matte) finish on my Cherry version, as well. Plus, the CG Special Bass 2014, while being so much lighter than a standard sized electric bass, is still sturdily built with a solid, one piece mahogany body, Gibson's glued-on short scale mahogany neck, beefy Grover tuning machines, and 3-way adjustable bridge. Mine also came with a nice, plush-lined hard shell Gibson case. Nice!

In short, I wouldn't call it very fancy, but it is attractive and seems to be a good solid value. I'm looking forward to many years of playing this affordable tone monster from Gibson. BTW, it's made in good ole Nashville, USA, which I really appreciate, too.

I got one of these (with the faded finish) a few months ago.

It has a short scale neck. This suits me perfectly. If you prefer a short neck, this is a very good choice.

But.
1) The fret buzz and pickup rattle was bad.
2) The pickup sound was uninspiring
3) The rear cover was offset, so the screw holes on one side just drop into the hole, rather than hitting wood.
4) The soldering job was amateur
5) The neck pickup rattled under the cover. On inspection it was just sitting loose under the cover. There were foam tabs under the pickup to push it up into the cover, but they squish down over time until the pickup rattles against the cover.
6) The bridge it just nasty.
7) The output was low.

Nevertheless, it was a Gibby for less than a grand. So this required some intervention.

1) Thicker strings. 50-105. These help with the tone and fret buzz. No truss adjustment was needed one the thicker strings were on.

2) Cut out a bit of cardboard a bit smaller than the neck pickup hole, and punch holes for the pole pieces. Place this between the pickup and the cover. So even if it's a little loose, it can't rattle.

3) Replace the bridge with a hipshot bridge. Much better, much more adjustable.

3a) Replace the intonation screw in the low E saddle with a shorter screw, so you can pull the saddle back a bit further, so you can properly intonate it. Intonate the guitar.

3b) Then adjust the string heights, which you can do independently on a hipshot bridge, but not the Gibby bridge.

4) Adjust the pickup height and pole pieces until you have normal output levels and even output per string.

It now sounds goods, plays really nicely, doesn't rattle and has an excellent feel.

I don't have solution for the loose screws in the rear cover. I just keep them in an envelope.

I have a personal preference for the stained wood look. I don't prefer shiny paint jobs. But that's a small thing compared to the feel and sound.

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

I was so excited to receive this guitar but after looking it over was very disappointed. The quality just isn't there for what it cost. It plays well but the sides of the frets are very sharp and the constant rubbing against the frets has made my index finger very sore. The frets will have to be filed and smoothed out before I can play for any length of time.... In the meantime, I'll go back to playing my Ibanez until the Gibson is fixed. Gibson, what has happened to the quality you used to put into your musical instruments??

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

Having owned several EB and SG basses over the years, I wanted another though the budget was limited. This bass did not disappoint - same tone, feel etc. of my last SG (a 1 of 1000 beauty). Always amazed at how much the price of an upscale instrument is in the finish - but be aware; the finish of this bass is pretty crude - looks like spray paint - but it plays like a dream. Great working axe. Not a visual work of art. Amazing value.

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

This bass would have been better if Gibson would change the flaws in it's design. Matte finish cheapens the look and quality.Poor placement of strap button makes bass tilt forward and being neck heavy doesn't help the balance issue. Due to my physical health the edges on the body of the bass aggravate my carpal tunnel when I rest my Wrist/forearm on it so it wasn't comfortable to play. Too bad. I recommend that you find this bass in any store and play it before you order it.

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

I went in to by a vintage Gibson EB0 bass and played it and the feel and action was great along with the pricetag. The only problem was there was not a lot of variance in the tone capabilities of the bass. I picked this one up and it was Night and Day! It is a great bass to play. You can get bight to muddy with this thing. The short scale neck makes it super easy to get around and the set up was perfect. The super bonus was the brown leather case with the hot pink fuzzy interior. Super rock and roll man. If you don't have one, GET ONE!!!!!!

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

As a 50year old musician with 30+ years experience I can tell you that Gibson has always been the symbol of impeccably high quality and precision.
My, how times have changed. When this bass arrived my first impression was positive as it is a very good-looking instrument. The Fireburst satin finish is beautiful on the front of the body and the satin black on everything else was done nicely. Understand that this is the trade-off for having a Gibson in this price range. I was disappointed, however, when I started looking at the rest of the bass.
While I clearly understand that most new instruments will need a complete set-up and even top end instruments will need some tweeking, this was something else. The 3-point bridge was set so low on the G side that the string was almost laying on the fretboard. The E side was set nearly as high as it would go. The saddles were a similar story. The E saddle was all the way down and back while the G saddle was all the way up and forward. I took some time and properly adjusted the bridge and saddles. After doing this, the action was great and it played well. Next I got out my tuner and went to work on the intonation. It only took a few minutes to get it set and I was ready to plug it in and crank up the volume!
Imagine the disappointment when I realized there was something seriously wrong with the neck pickup. While it's hard to describe, there was a buzzing/rattling coming from the neck pickup. The bridge pickup sounded great and was bright and chimey. I did some research and found several examples of other owners with the same problem. They talked about curing the problem with a cardboard spacer between the pickup cover and the magnet or a piece of foam, etc. I thought it's a shame that I've got MIM Fenders and even a made in China guitar that has flawless quality and workmanship and my GIBSON is going to need a piece of cardboard stuck under the pickup cover to make it playable.
If this one was the only example I'd just chalk it up to "one that got away" under the radar of QA. The fact that there were several other examples on the web (and who know how many examples not on the web) tells me there are quality issues with the bass.
I would like to pay the highest compliment to Musicians Friend. Their customer service is phenomenal and is the reason I do 100% of my business with them. One quick phone call had a return label in my email inbox and a new bass on the way. MF is a real pleasure to do business with and will continue to have my loyalty.

Comments about Gibson SG Special 2014 Electric Bass Guitar:

This guitar is a dream come true for me. I had a Gibson EB0 back in the 60's and loved it and played in several bands in the Northeast. Without thinking it through, I sold the bass. However, this bass is excellent. Very classy looking and plays like a dream right out of the case. Thanks Gibson.

              WOW! What a difference!
The first bass I received had issues as described in the review below.
Again, a huge compliment to Musicians Friend. They had a replacement on my doorstep in a few days. Even before the 1st one had been returned.
The replacement is perfect in every regard. The fit, finish, tone, action, intonation and every other detail of this beautiful instrument is flawless.
THIS is how a Gibson is supposed to be.
After this experience I would tell you to buy one FROM MUSICIANS FRIEND without fear knowing that if you have any issue, MF will make it right.
Again my highest praise to Musicians Friend.

keep in mind this is not a Standard, or even a Studio model. So the finish is just O.K. But it is a Gibson, and comes with a hard case. A good deal for the price.
A suprisingly fat sound for how light weight it is, and the short scale is easier on my left hand.

Good inexpensive USA made easy to play short scale bass with good variety of tones. Nothing fancy, good fun to play. Easy transition for a guitar player like myself.

Back in the day I rebuilt an old basket case EB3. I sanded off the old cherry
finish and used a finish similar to that which is on the SG special bass.
Therefore the nitrocellulose is no obstacle. I plan to find some short-scale D'Addario half-rounds to replace the stock strings as this has been my preference for 30 years. As a fan of short-scale bass guitar, I'm glad to have one of these. There aren't too many good short-scales around, and Gibson seems to have scored big with this one.
My only complaint is the 3-point "floating" bridge. I understand that Gibson will offer a Babicz full-contact bridge for the 2015 models. This would be a noticeable improvement, and I hope to get one.

Nice to play, plenty of tone control between the two PU's.
Took a while to get used to satin finish on back of neck. Don't care for overall satin finish, but also didn't buy it for the finish. I bought it for sound! And it delivers.
Volume control has lots to get used to. 0-1 gets really loud. Not enough control there. But getting used to it. But as far as sound. I love it! Plenty of different tones can be had with these two great PU's. For the price, it's terrific.

I really wanted to like this bass but in the end I decided my 1980's Korean Charvel bass with Jackson USA electronics was superior in every way, except maybe styling. The frets were a bit sharp although that alone would have been an easy fix. It also had a rattle that I never located the source of that made it feel a bit like a Made-in-Tiawan piece of junk. I thought about putting a stethescope on it to find out but ultimately just sent it back. It didn't sustain very well and of course you can't let the neck go, but that's just built into the design. Also, the tone control didn't seem to make a big difference in the sound from 0 to 10. The burst one does look nice though despite the flat finish and the components do look and feel quality. The case is real nice too although the latches seem a bit flimsy. I really can't not recomend it, just be prepared to deal with a couple issues before it becomes your dream short scale. About the finish, the back was black and I noticed that it marks very easily. Even a plastic button on a shirt can make a mess of the back.

Arrived with a cracked neck. It was obvious enough that I have to wonder how it got past Gibson's alleged quality control. Sent it back, waiting for refund.
