This is the ideal bass for me. The neck is easier to play than any short or full scale bass I've owned or tried. The body is comfortable and lightweight. Also, this bass is not as neck-heavy as I thought it would be.
In keeping with Gibson bass tradition, the neck pickup is very "phat" sounding but has much more clarity than the "mudbuckers" in the old EB-0 and EB-3 basses. The bridge pickup is a bit thin and bright for my tastes by itself but sounds really nice when blended with the neck PUP. I usually run the neck PUP full up with the bridge PUP at about 8 or 9 so I get all the fullness of the full-size 'bucker and the added bite and growl of the mini. Both PUP's sound great all the way up, too.
The tuners are high quality Grover's, the pickups are well designed and the overall fit and finish is very good. The 3-point bridge is functional, but I would recommend replacing it with a Hipshot Supertone. The Supertone functions, sounds and looks better than the stock bridge and, in my opinion, is worth the price. That is the only thing I would change on this bass.
The SG Bass Faded is a tempting option, since it is basically the same instrument but with a matte finish and costs less. But, man!, when you see the high gloss version next to the faded, the extra cash seems worth it in the end.

I've wanted this bass for years, but have now been through two of them - one is a crack in the wood at the neck joint, and another with a crack in the nitro finish. Overall the fit and finish of these basses was not great, for exampl a prety ratty neck edge on both. Really disapointed, and the thrill of owning a Gibson is gone.... likely forever.
On a plus, played like a dream and sounded great.

Comments about Gibson SG Standard 4-String Bass:
I love this bass! I started out with an Ibanez bass and it was good, but this Gibson is so much easier to play. It has great feel and of course a fast GIBSON neck. I put Thomastik-Infeld flat wound jazz strings on it and it just sounds awesome! I would have had to make some adjustments had I left the original strings on it, but I put what I like on it and never had to make an adjustment! I agree with the reviewer that stated that the finish on the neck makes going up and down the neck a little slower, but I keep a little powder on hand to help with that. I've never played a bass I like any better than this one. If I were to buy a full scale I would get a Fender P-Bass, but I don't need one. Great Bass!

A true legend among bass guitars.
In true Gibson fashion a very good quality. Unfortunately I had to upgrade my strings to halp eliminate buzz.

I was at guitarcenter yesterday and i played this bass for about 45 mins before buying it because this bass was perfect. the action was right a good height, the neck was the pefect length and thickness and the pickups were in the pefect places to get just the right sound. the thing that i liked the most about this bass was the way it felt and sounded. it felt so comfortable and it just sounded amazing. the only down side was the price. if i was you i would save the extra $500 dollars and get the faded version.overall great bass!!!!!!!!

not only does this bass play like a dream, it is a work of art. I cannot find a flaw to save my life.I held off trying this bass due to negativefeed back from friends about short scale basses.I tried one at a local shop and feel in love. This bass is fast and furious! Buy this bass, you wont be sorry!
Comments about Gibson SG Standard 4-String Bass:
If there was ever a way to create a kick drum trigger that allowed the drummer to change the pitch of the bass drum every time the beater hit the drum head, it would be the ideal bass sound for me. It would also put me (and the rest of us) out of work. This bass comes close to that sound. Forget attack or definition, although that mini-bridge pickup does get a spanky growl.

Got my SG reissue about a week ago. Nice! Got the ole red head! Back in the early 70's, My best buddy got a new EBO with black nylon strings & was the cats meow! Loved that critter. I've jones'd for one every sense, I have a hoggist collection of basses & mainly Fenders, but this baby is sweet and very well constructed all the way around. The sound is pure fat old school Gibson. Rock-n-Roll Baby, or Mississippi Funk/Blues old school, this will get ya there! the case is very nice also! I felt 18 again when I first laid eyes on it & when I picked er up & plugged in, all I could say is "YES"!!! Gibson did a better job on this critter than they do on their "Custom Shop" guitars! or I was extremely Lucky! I know,I also just got a Custom Shop ES-339! Much more care of details were given here. This is a keeper & a good investment! Highly recommended for any bass players collection! A must have! U won't regret! Gibson actually came through on this one, a sleeper. Get U 1 !!!
Comments about Gibson SG Standard 4-String Bass:
this is a good bass if you play 50's,and 60's and 70's. If you want good bottom end and easy playing this bass rocks. Perfect for blues. But not good if you play all kinds of music. If you want to play funk style this bass will not perform like a jazz fender, music man or warwick. I play in 2 different bands and play every weekend. The SG is not versatile enough for different sounds even if you use pedals. But, I would never sell it just in case I want to play some cream, mountain or old beatles. I own a 5 string carvin, warwick, fender and i play through gk amps.. out of all basses i recommend the war....

I'm 38, and have been playing drums in punk, garage, and surf bands from 17 years. I've always wanted to play bass, and decided to pull the trigger and learn 2 weeks ago. My bass of choice? The SG reissue. I've been lusting over SG basses since I became I musician. I promised myself if I ever learned to play, I'd by an SG. Why? Well, I'm only 5'7", and have short arms - the short scale is a big plus for me. I also have a bad back, and the light weight suits me well. And the sound. I love the SG sound. Ok, the price... I was lucky enough that I could afford it, but only because I mentioned to the guy at the store that I noticed that they had raised the price on the SG since January. Well, he gave me a deal at the old price. Anyway, yeah, if you're tired of playing something that sounds like a Fender P or JM, try the SG.
