OVERVIEW

A bass designed with yesterday's style and today's technology.

Players fond of the old adage "if it ain't broke¦" haven't played a JB-2. You see, the G&L JB-2 is all about refinement, blending "holy grail" Alnico single-coil tone with modern Leo Fender improvements.

The JB-2's classic Alnico V pickups have tone reminiscent of the best examples from the early ˜60s, thanks to the work of Paul Gagon, G&L VP Engineering. Gagon found his inspiration reviewing original prints stored in Leo Fender's private laboratory at G&L, but that was just the start. About 30 years ago, Gagon was an R&D engineer at another company when he was tasked with finding out what was so special about the early bolt-on basses many players raved about. Gagon tirelessly analyzed many examples of what were considered holy grail basses, spending time out on the shop floor talking to builders still working in the pickup department since the ˜50s, all on a quest to discover where the real mojo was - and wasn't. What he learned from the builders matched his own engineering analysis. You see, back in the day, the actual spec of pickups coming down that old production line varied considerably. That meant coming up with the right specs was more challenging than simply following the prints, and Gagon's persistence paid off as the JB-2 serves up delicious, classic tone.

While the pickups are the origin of the tone, the JB-2 will surprise you with a clarity and sustain unmatched by old basses with their rudimentary bridge design. You see, the JB-2 features an innovative G&L Saddle-Lock bridge to transfer string energy right into the body end-grain for an incredibly resonant instrument. If you're ready to let go of the past but still love that classic Alnico tone, get your hands on a JB-2 and experience a brilliant mash-up of old-school and new-school Leo.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

Let me start by saying I've owned this bass for 6 months. I've had time to really play and hear this bass. For the money, playability, and sound this has to be the best value on the market today. I used to record with a vintage Fender '72 jazz bass, but this bass has pushed it aside. Just think about that for a second! The tones are clear and present on the JB-2, and sit in a mix very well. FYI, I use this bass for clean bass tones.

The bridge on this bass is so nice! What a great design. It's anchored into the body and very easy to set up intonation and radius. When it's all set up, it locks into place. Helping your bridge set up last much longer.

I love the neck carve and finish.

Pickups are awesome.

It holds tuning.

Near perfect set up out of the box and I'm particular when it comes to set up.

I hope this review helps!

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

I got this bass as a condition 3 used. I was expecting some big dings and lots of scratches...the bass looked like new, I found a few small scratches and 1 small dent on the headstock. MF is very conservative in their grading.
This bass sounds and plays great. It's like a Jazz bass on steroids. The pickups are so hot you'll swear they are active. The bass is also lightweight. The craftsmanship is very good, not perfect but still very good. The neck is unfinished (that's what I prefer).
Bottom line if you want a really wicked sounding Jazz bass that plays very good, seriously consider this bass.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

After playing bass for almost 30 years this is the first G&L I've played. I've owned a lot of Fenders but there aren't many G&Ls in my area. I liked the price point, features, and online sound clips so I thought I'd give the JB-2 Tribute a try. I've had this bass almost a year now and it is excellent. The tone and overall feel of the bass are great. I like the hotter jazz pickups that are in this bass. The electronics cavity is a little weak. The bass arrived with one pickup not working. It was a quick fix but shouldn't happen with a new bass. The wiring and pots seem to be where they saved a little money. The bridge, tuners, and pickups are all nice quality. The body is a little downsized from the typical Fender Jazz body so it took a few weeks for me to get used to that, now I don't even notice it. Very comfortable neck with decent fretwork.

I would recommend this bass to anyone looking for a quality jazz bass for not a lot of money.

The Tribute sounds so good it has me looking to get a US G&L sometime down the line.

Before you buy a Fender, check this Bass Out. I have a Fender American Jazz and this one beats it hands down. No better Bass for the money out there.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

This bass is way better than a MIM jazz... just saying. The pickups are better, the heavy duty, lock in bridge kicks the MIM"s sheet metal bridge's butt.I play funk, rock, jazz, and worship music, and this bass just suits every genre! The maple neck is just beautiful, the sunburst is just beautiful and organic. The set-up is perfect, all I had to do is tune up and BOOM, perfection at it's finest. You basically are paying a bit more than a Squier Classic Vibe but my god it beats a MIM! As a 14 year-old, I can't make bank and spend it all on a bass so I'm ballin a budget and this bass should cost a lot more for how much work goes into it. Buy it, you won't be disappointing.

          It really is a steal

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

My best piece of advice would be to get one while you still can; they really are a steal. I don't think that G&L can continue to offer the instrument, as it is now constructed, without bankrupting the company.
I watched the handful of videos on the internet, and none of them sound even close to what my bass sounds like in person. I just wish I could sit in the room with you so you could hear for yourself. The pickups are, apparently, very hot wound. She almost sounds like there are active electronics, but these are passive pickups.
Continuing with the electronics: I have read reviewers who thought that where G&L cut corners cost-wise
was with the "guts" of the bass... the wiring/ the potentiometers ( the "pots")/ the capacitors (the "caps"). Maybe I got a good one, but my guitar has excellent components. The pots- all three of them- have very good tolerances (the amount of turning you have to "roll" a knob to hear a difference). I've got much, much higher-end basses that don't really compare. (They only really affect the sound from, say 6 to10 and 0 to 3.)
Anyway, if you've ever believed a reviewer....
The body is made of swamp ash- highly revered as a tone-wood, and though I think it must be made of book-matched pieces, I am having a darned hard time figuring out where one piece ends and the other begins. (One other thing before I continue- there are 6 bolts joining the neck to the body... it looks odd at first.) The grain is very pronounced, by the way, and, at least for me, took some living with; now I admit- she's beautiful, to me.
One last thing about the body before I forget: Although the body looks like it's encased in glass there is no finish at all on the neck or headstock. Mine felt almost like it had just come from the lathe (which is a feeling I love). It was white but has lately gotten darker, and I figure it will only get better. It's also got a glossy sheen these days to replace that pasty white complexion.
          Bottom line- buy it.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

I bought this bass as a level 2 used from MF, I have to say that there grading system is very fair. The bass I received is flawless, I don't think I could tell it from new if I was not informed that it was used. Now comes the goods! This bass does everything from punch to growl to thump! I use it in a cover band that does a wide variety of rock and some country, it handles it with ease. I also have a G&L Tribute L 2000 that I have used for 5 years, I have a hard time deciding what bass to play, they are both very good versatile instruments. I think the neck on the JB2 is where the bass shines for me as I have small hands,it is very comfortable. This is the first bass that I have owned in years that is passive. I have always preferred active bass guitars till now. I play through a Genz Benz shuttle 6.2 thru 2 GK Neo 112 cabs with a sans amp para driver in front The bass just sounds great! Trust me, pick one up you won't be sorry!

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

This showed up at my door at around 5PM. I took it out of the box and brought it to a gig just to see how it sounded thru my GK amp. It sounded so good I played it all night! I usually play an 83 Fender Jazz bass with EMG pickups. This equaled the sound and playing-wise the neck is better! All of the basses I was looking at buying were over 1k and the one that blew them all away was less then half that!

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

I've been playing bass for many years; have tried Fenders, Gibsons, Ibanez, Laklands, Hofners, Ricks and many others; and the JB-2 Tribute beats them all in terms of playability and tonal variety. (The only bass I've found that tops the JB-2 is the Ernie Ball Music Man Sterling, an active bass which costs 3-4x as much.) Indeed, I recently compared a JB-2 Tribute to two models from a big-name manufacturer which cost nearly three times as much, playing them back-to-back through the same high-end amp, and it wasn't close - - the JB-2 was much better overall.

As other reviewers note, this bass is a fabulous value for the money. IMHO, you simply cannot do better in a moderately-priced instrument. The quality, workmanship and body finish are very good, and the light weight makes this bass a real pleasure to play, especially for extended periods. I can't say enough good things about the neck - - its narrow width (1.5" at the nut ) and smooth unfinished surface make it super-playable and great for small hands. The G&L bridge is excellent and gives the instrument superb sustain. The pickups are strong and will produce a wide spectrum of tones from deep P-bass to poppy and jazzy. The only weakness, as Bass Bret and Woof have noted, is the electronics (to be expected in a budget instrument). The pots in the Tribute version of the JB-2 do not alter the p/u blend or volume in a progressive fashion; they have little to no effect over some parts of the knobs' turning range, then suddenly produce a big change. Likewise, the shielding in the cavity is a bit spotty, permitting a bit too much single-coil hum. However, quality replacement pots are very cheap, as is improving the cavity shielding. With these very inexpensive upgrades, you'll essentially end up with the equivalent of a US-made JB-2, which has the same body, neck, pickups and tuners but costs a lot more. Buy this bass - - you won't regret it!

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

This is an incredible bass! I'm a 50-year pro, mostly in guitar performance, but in the last 3 years have moved over to bass. I have a short scale bass and an MIM Fender Fretless Jazz, both of which I love, however this axe is now my go-to instrument. Right out of the box this bass was fabulous. The action and unfinished neck were superb for a super-smooth playability. With Leo's bridge the sustain will make you very happy. The craftsmanship, even though assembled in Indonesia, is flawless. I got the Sunburst Swamp Ash and Maple Fretboard version and the Swamp Ash with the finish is breathtaking. No setup needed on my end. Some might need an adjustment, but it was perfect for my style. Just had to put on a new set of strings because the factory set were not playable. Do yourself a favor, just try it. You will be blown away at this price point.

This is the best bass I have ever played for the price. When I received it , it was actually in tune. The craftsmanship is outstanding and has a sound that compares to a high end Fender jazz bass. I did, however have to lower the strings to the fretboard a tad with no fret buzz at all. This is the best bass for the money

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

I've been playing the guitar since the 7th grade, over 40 years! I've wanted to buy a bass for a long time, but I just put it off and stuck to the guitar. But when I found the G&L JB2 Swampash Bass on Musician's Friend's website,.and read the reviews, I knew that I had to get one! I already own three G&L guitars so I knew that the quality would be excellent! I was not disappointed!! This bass could not be any better! First of all, I buy guitars for three reasons, the way they look, the quality of the way that they are put together, and the most important thing..THE WAY THEY SOUND! This G&L JB2 Excels at all three of these! The Swamp Ash body is So Unbelievable! The clear gloss finish and the pattern in the body wood is unique and absolutely gorgeous, and the Rosewood fret board is superb! The quality of the build and the pickups and other parts that are used are Outstanding! Which all result in a Wonderful and Powerful sound that is as good as any bass you can find, even those costing 3 or 4 times as much!! If you're looking for your first bass or your 10th bass, you won't be disappointed with this G&L JB2 bass!! I'd suggest getting one while they're still being made!

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

Bought an open box. Level 2 Blem. Haven't found a scratch or flaw yet. It was pretty much unplayable out of the box. Probably why it was sent Back,) Still had the plastic on the pups and the back plate. Put a fresh set of super slinkys on it. Had to loosen the truss rod almost 1/2 a turn to get the string rattle out. Bridge height was good. Intonation good on all but the A string. Now It's a monster. Rings like a bell! I put a fresh set of slinks on My L-2000 as well and did a direct comparison. I Love them both very much. While the JB-2 doesn't have the power or versatility of the L-2000, it has that classic Jbass tone on steroids and more sustain for some reason. JB-2 is swamp ash and the L2000. is just plain old ash? Luck of the draw?.or the thinner neck. i dunno. Hey, 3rd times charm. Leo got it right with G&L

This G&L JB2 Tribute is an excellent bass at any price! Workmanship, electronics/tone, weight/balance, playability are all excellent. Truly, it plays as good as basses costing way more! Neck is extremely comfortable. Medium/light weight too. Very comfortable! I'm surprised at the value of this instrument. Tuners and string tree are not great but adequate but I gave 5 stars because the whole package is well worth the price.
If you need an inexpensive J Bass that can truly cut a pro gig, this is it!

I use this bass in my home studio. With the two pickups I can get some good tones. I have a Fender P-Bass and I can tell you that the JB2 is not as heavy (I noticed this as soon as I strapped it on). Bass was set up good right from the box. The sunburst color is very eye catching and the neck and frets feel good.

For the price, this is a good deal.

Don't be afraid. Yes it is an import. Yes you'll want to change the strings. Yes you'll want a tech to do a set up. The pick ups and neck are fantastic. Set the volumes and tone to get a P bass or J bass quality sound.
Now I leave my P and J at home
