OVERVIEW

A bass designed with yesterday's style and today's technology.

Players fond of the old adage "if it ain't broke¦" haven't played a JB-2. You see, the G&L JB-2 is all about refinement, blending "holy grail" Alnico single-coil tone with modern Leo Fender improvements.

The JB-2's classic Alnico V pickups have tone reminiscent of the best examples from the early ˜60s, thanks to the work of Paul Gagon, G&L VP Engineering. Gagon found his inspiration reviewing original prints stored in Leo Fender's private laboratory at G&L, but that was just the start. About 30 years ago, Gagon was an R&D engineer at another company when he was tasked with finding out what was so special about the early bolt-on basses many players raved about. Gagon tirelessly analyzed many examples of what were considered holy grail basses, spending time out on the shop floor talking to builders still working in the pickup department since the ˜50s, all on a quest to discover where the real mojo was - and wasn't. What he learned from the builders matched his own engineering analysis. You see, back in the day, the actual spec of pickups coming down that old production line varied considerably. That meant coming up with the right specs was more challenging than simply following the prints, and Gagon's persistence paid off as the JB-2 serves up delicious, classic tone.

While the pickups are the origin of the tone, the JB-2 will surprise you with a clarity and sustain unmatched by old basses with their rudimentary bridge design. You see, the JB-2 features an innovative G&L Saddle-Lock bridge to transfer string energy right into the body end-grain for an incredibly resonant instrument. If you're ready to let go of the past but still love that classic Alnico tone, get your hands on a JB-2 and experience a brilliant mash-up of old-school and new-school Leo.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

Let me start by saying I've owned this bass for 6 months. I've had time to really play and hear this bass. For the money, playability, and sound this has to be the best value on the market today. I used to record with a vintage Fender '72 jazz bass, but this bass has pushed it aside. Just think about that for a second! The tones are clear and present on the JB-2, and sit in a mix very well. FYI, I use this bass for clean bass tones.

The bridge on this bass is so nice! What a great design. It's anchored into the body and very easy to set up intonation and radius. When it's all set up, it locks into place. Helping your bridge set up last much longer.

I love the neck carve and finish.

Pickups are awesome.

It holds tuning.

Near perfect set up out of the box and I'm particular when it comes to set up.

I hope this review helps!

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

I got this bass as a condition 3 used. I was expecting some big dings and lots of scratches...the bass looked like new, I found a few small scratches and 1 small dent on the headstock. MF is very conservative in their grading.
This bass sounds and plays great. It's like a Jazz bass on steroids. The pickups are so hot you'll swear they are active. The bass is also lightweight. The craftsmanship is very good, not perfect but still very good. The neck is unfinished (that's what I prefer).
Bottom line if you want a really wicked sounding Jazz bass that plays very good, seriously consider this bass.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

After playing bass for almost 30 years this is the first G&L I've played. I've owned a lot of Fenders but there aren't many G&Ls in my area. I liked the price point, features, and online sound clips so I thought I'd give the JB-2 Tribute a try. I've had this bass almost a year now and it is excellent. The tone and overall feel of the bass are great. I like the hotter jazz pickups that are in this bass. The electronics cavity is a little weak. The bass arrived with one pickup not working. It was a quick fix but shouldn't happen with a new bass. The wiring and pots seem to be where they saved a little money. The bridge, tuners, and pickups are all nice quality. The body is a little downsized from the typical Fender Jazz body so it took a few weeks for me to get used to that, now I don't even notice it. Very comfortable neck with decent fretwork.

I would recommend this bass to anyone looking for a quality jazz bass for not a lot of money.

The Tribute sounds so good it has me looking to get a US G&L sometime down the line.

Before you buy a Fender, check this Bass Out. I have a Fender American Jazz and this one beats it hands down. No better Bass for the money out there.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

This bass is way better than a MIM jazz... just saying. The pickups are better, the heavy duty, lock in bridge kicks the MIM"s sheet metal bridge's butt.I play funk, rock, jazz, and worship music, and this bass just suits every genre! The maple neck is just beautiful, the sunburst is just beautiful and organic. The set-up is perfect, all I had to do is tune up and BOOM, perfection at it's finest. You basically are paying a bit more than a Squier Classic Vibe but my god it beats a MIM! As a 14 year-old, I can't make bank and spend it all on a bass so I'm ballin a budget and this bass should cost a lot more for how much work goes into it. Buy it, you won't be disappointing.

          It really is a steal

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

My best piece of advice would be to get one while you still can; they really are a steal. I don't think that G&L can continue to offer the instrument, as it is now constructed, without bankrupting the company.
I watched the handful of videos on the internet, and none of them sound even close to what my bass sounds like in person. I just wish I could sit in the room with you so you could hear for yourself. The pickups are, apparently, very hot wound. She almost sounds like there are active electronics, but these are passive pickups.
Continuing with the electronics: I have read reviewers who thought that where G&L cut corners cost-wise
was with the "guts" of the bass... the wiring/ the potentiometers ( the "pots")/ the capacitors (the "caps"). Maybe I got a good one, but my guitar has excellent components. The pots- all three of them- have very good tolerances (the amount of turning you have to "roll" a knob to hear a difference). I've got much, much higher-end basses that don't really compare. (They only really affect the sound from, say 6 to10 and 0 to 3.)
Anyway, if you've ever believed a reviewer....
The body is made of swamp ash- highly revered as a tone-wood, and though I think it must be made of book-matched pieces, I am having a darned hard time figuring out where one piece ends and the other begins. (One other thing before I continue- there are 6 bolts joining the neck to the body... it looks odd at first.) The grain is very pronounced, by the way, and, at least for me, took some living with; now I admit- she's beautiful, to me.
One last thing about the body before I forget: Although the body looks like it's encased in glass there is no finish at all on the neck or headstock. Mine felt almost like it had just come from the lathe (which is a feeling I love). It was white but has lately gotten darker, and I figure it will only get better. It's also got a glossy sheen these days to replace that pasty white complexion.
          Bottom line- buy it.

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

I bought this bass as a level 2 used from MF, I have to say that there grading system is very fair. The bass I received is flawless, I don't think I could tell it from new if I was not informed that it was used. Now comes the goods! This bass does everything from punch to growl to thump! I use it in a cover band that does a wide variety of rock and some country, it handles it with ease. I also have a G&L Tribute L 2000 that I have used for 5 years, I have a hard time deciding what bass to play, they are both very good versatile instruments. I think the neck on the JB2 is where the bass shines for me as I have small hands,it is very comfortable. This is the first bass that I have owned in years that is passive. I have always preferred active bass guitars till now. I play through a Genz Benz shuttle 6.2 thru 2 GK Neo 112 cabs with a sans amp para driver in front The bass just sounds great! Trust me, pick one up you won't be sorry!

Comments about G&L Tribute JB2 4-String Electric Bass:

This showed up at my door at around 5PM. I took it out of the box and brought it to a gig just to see how it sounded thru my GK amp. It sounded so good I played it all night! I usually play an 83 Fender Jazz bass with EMG pickups. This equaled the sound and playing-wise the neck is better! All of the basses I was looking at buying were over 1k and the one that blew them all away was less then half that!

I bought this as used, level 2,MF is really conservative in their rating. other than some Very small scratches on the back (which I,m almost sure I can buff out) the bass is as close to brand new as it can get! thank,s MF.the fit&finnish is superb, the fretwork is well done,& I especially like the heavy bridge.the set-up is really close to what I would do myself, the only thing I plan to do is install a brass nut.take it from a dude that,s been playin for over 40 yrs, for the money, you can,t get a better deal! thanks MF!
