      G&L

A fully loaded bass that's dynamic enough for any style from the legendary Leo Fender.

Three decades ago, the G&L L-2000 bass served notice that company founder Leo Fender was ready to disrupt the status quo. The bold, brash L-2000 has always been an exhilarating experience for players with the skill to pull it off. Now the new M-2000 and M-2500 harness that power with a sonic palate that will surprise and delight new and die-hard G&L fans alike.

Leo’s MFD humbuckers have always been the heart of the iconic L-Series. In the all-new M-Series, these powerhouses are voiced to fully exploit a studio-quality 18V preamp system specially designed by G&L’s R&D wizard Paul Gagon. With an LF442 chip, 100V poly caps, 1% metal film resistors and big, fat signal traces on the mil-spec circuit board, this preamp reveals everything the player and the instrument have to offer.

      And there’s even more:
      • Primary volume and pan controls to explore the full range of sounds available between the two pickups
      • 3-band EQ with peripherally placed, center-detent, reduced-diameter knobs
      • An impeccable, familiar “feel” of the instrument in the hands and on the shoulder
      • The return of the classic C-shape 1-5/8” neck, discontinued by G&L in the 1980s

For slapping, rolling back some highs and dialing up some lows, coupled with a mid-range boost, magnifies the intensity that Leo’s humbuckers are famous for. Need more definition for fingerstyle? Just bring up the treble and roll off the bass for a nuanced and detailed sound. Headroom? The new M-Series preamp harnesses the power of those meaty MFD humbuckers without a hint of clipping. The best tools are simple, intuitive and easy to use, and that’s exactly what you’ll find in the new M-Series package.

      Features
      • 34" scale
      • Two Leo Fender-designed / Paul Gagon-specified G&L MFD humbucking pickups made in Fullerton, California
      • Swamp ash body on translucent and burst finishes, basswood body on solid finishes
      • Hard-rock maple neck with maple or rosewood fingerboard
      • Medium C shape neck profile
      • 22 medium-jumbo frets, nickel
      • Traditional open-back tuning keys
      • Leo Fender-designed G&L Saddle-Lock bridge
      • G&L M-spec 18V preamp, volume, pan, 3-band boost/cut EQ with center detents

Truly, it’s the evolution of Leo’s revolution.

Comments about G&L Tribute M2000 4-String Electric Bass:

This would be a five star rating except for the fact that I had to adjust the truss rod (see below). I am an experienced musician, but don't play bass very much and haven't had an electric bass in many years. I had been looking for a decent one to improve on and selected this one because it was offered at a very good price. I am happy with my purchase at this point. It arrived with some significant fret buzz, but this was easily corrected by tweaking the truss rod. The intonation and action were then quite good. I think it is a beautiful instrument and plays nicely. This is the first bass I have played with an onboard preamp and I find that I can get a really wide range of tone by playing with the settings. I think it would have been hard to do better at this price point and I think this may be the last bass that I ever buy. Of course, if I were a more serious bass player, that probably wouldn't be true, but as an amateur who plays occassionally, I expect to be happy with this one for a long time to come.

I've been a drummer for many years and am new to bass guitars. This one will certainly fill my needs for many years to come. The neck was smooth, pickups work great, beautiful finishes, great tone as far as I'm concerned. If you're a 30-year pro and think this will compare to guitars costing 2 to 3 times more, it probably wont. I'm very pleased with this guitar.

Comments about G&L Tribute M2000 4-String Electric Bass:

THE M2000 FIXES THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH THE L2000. I have an L2000 also. Love it but it is hard to change tones between songs and quickly dial in what you want. The M2000 fixes that with an intuitive 3 band EQ and pickup pan that works really well. It has great basic tone and punch and you can dial in whatever you want quickly and easily. Neck dive is an issue, but it is on the L2000 also (it's worth dealing with it). I did have a quality issue. The first M2000 I got had an intermittent preamp issue. Had to return the bass. The 2nd one is working like it should. Both basses had excellent fit/finish, looked and played great. I have been playing bass 40+ years, currently a semi-pro.

Comments about G&L Tribute M2000 4-String Electric Bass:

I have been playing bass for more than thirty years. I was quite disappointed in this bass after reading good reviews. As soon as I took it out of the box I noticed the back of the neck was not smoothly finished. It had grit or something along the whole back of the neck and the finish coat was wavy as well. Although the variety of tones that could be dialed in with the electronics was impressive, it was not consistent across all of the strings and the whole neck, i.e. get a good tone for the high notes and the lows don't sound good and vice versa. This is not good for a bassist who moves all over the neck when he plays!

Had the neck been smooth, it was pretty easy to play and move up and down the neck. However, there was also some string buzz just in certain spots along the neck, indicating a fret problem that adjusting string height would not necessarily remedy (unless getting it ridiculously high!).

All in all I expected a much nicer quality instrument for the money. While I didn't expect high end for that price, I thought it would be better quality than it turned out to be and certainly better than some starter bass.

In the end I sent the G&L back for a full refund. This I used to fund an Ibanez Prestige 5-string bass. I haven't gotten it yet, but it cost around three times as much as the G&L and hopefully it will be well worth it!
