OVERVIEW

A blast from the past!

Musicians love the Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar. In 1956 Walter Hofner had an idea for an amplified semi-acoustic bass. When it was brought to life, it proved to be a unique instrument with a smooth, sweet sound and a playing ease that eludes most ordinary basses. Many players revere Hofner's Violin Bass as a legend because of its historical significance and its warm, woody, double-bass-like amplified tone.

Named for the year the most familiar version of the Violin Bass was popularized by by a certain young bass player from Liverpool, the Vintage '63 captures its characteristic tone -- deep, warm and reminiscent of a full-sized string bass. Built to be as durable as its legacy, the compact-sized, easy-to-play, light-in-weight Vintage '63 is equally at home onstage or in the studio.

hmm

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

I had a friend I use to jam with a couple years back who was a Beatles fan and had this bass. I was the bassis for this "jam band" and I had my eye on his Hofner (I was bord playing my Vantage bass) so I started using it. There were some problems with the neck, and my friend had a screw shoved above the nut to keep the action playable and I believe the body was worped. I have no other recollection of this bass. So if one were to buy this product, keep it well maintained.

Great bass for recording Country and Rock

By Joel-QqqF6

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

I love The Beatles and their sound. However, This bass sounds great for any style of music. I have used it to record our Country band, Mick Cruz and Diamondback.I've also used it to record my own music. I has a great deep sound as well as a quick attack sound. It's sweet and in your face round sound. I record strait through a LA 610 Pre-Amp into Pro-tools.

Fantastic Bass

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

I just recently purchased the Hofner 500/1 and am so happy with it. I also own a Rickenbacker 4003 and it is nearly just as good. It's hollow body gives it a sound similiar to a double bass and the flatwound strings make it easy to play. I tried the Hofner Icon Bass but had problems with it and it just doesn't even compare to this. Definitely worth the money.

More than the Beatles...

By Neatoman

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

Well, I say I've played it, my family has a 1958 Hofner floating around, and this is my overall impression of this model. This bass has a very short scale, 30" as compared to the 34" standard on a Fender bass. You'll find that it plays fairly easy, but the strings feel loose. The frets are, obviously, spaced closer than on a Fender style bass, which takes some getting used to.The tone is very dull. This may be a hinderance, but it also allows one to play higher up and still get a deep sound. Playing a middle C (as written) provides about as much depth as the G a fourth lower on other basses. This can be used to your advantage.Like the Tobias basses, this bass can be made to do a fairly good "fretted fretless" impression. It has a sound somewhat similar to an upright bass with more sustain. If you like to play songs orignally for fretless basses, but don't like or have a fretless, this can be a nice alternative. You may need to use some EQ to get the exact sound. If you're looking for the sound of Paul McCartney (Beatles) or Kelly Groucutt (ELO), this bass is for you.

Hofner 500/1 V63

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

Super bass. Not only for that Beatle sound, but I use for everything. Will duplicate the early Beatle sound through any amp. For an example of the sound you'll get, listen to Taxman on the Revolver CD.

a great little bass

By Zak-TrrcT

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

I play in a beatles tribute band but have owned this bass since before that started. Ive loved it since the day I got it. It is well constructed and has a great sound. It has a very thumpy deep bassy tone. It would be an excellent bass for reggae or hip hop but also works well for just about anything as Ive found. I also own an origonal 63 Hofner just like Pauls in every way except right handed. And it stacks up very well. The flatwounds it comes with are perfect, Ive kept the origonals on because they sound that great. Im more of a fender guy but this bass gets the deepness that fenders cant. Sounds alot like an upright. Defeintly a worth while bass to own.

Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

I am a luthier, and rearely do I ever get a new guitar that I don't have to set up (or sometimes even repair). This one was perfect right out of the box. Obviously the crew at Hofner spent some time setting up this one and getting it perfect. Fit and finish are superb. A very beautiful pice of spruce on the front and knock-your-socks-down flamed maple on the back. I didn't like the way the pick-guard mounted - but I took it off anyway (like Sir Paul). The sound is very similar to an acoustic bass, rather than an electric. Comes with flat-wounds. Not many features, so if this is your only performing bass (and you aren't in a Beatles tribute band) you'd better have a pretty versatile amp. Overall - very cool. Kind of like your own time machine.

Outstanding Bass

By Craig-BUKx7

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

I have owned my Hofner for almost 2 years. I have been playing bass for around 20 years and have owned over 20 bass?. The small scale and light weight almost made it feel like a toy compared to my Fender Jazz and Precision bass?, but the more I played it the more I loved it. Last week I brought out the Hofner for the first time to my weekly jam with friends - of course everyone loved the look and the vibe of the bass. I actually found the bass a bit to get used to playing standing up - it was hard to see the fretboard and having no dots on the side of the neck - a little bit of more work to play through the songs that I usually take for granted. The sound of the bass was outstanding though - the tone was unbelievable. The guys looked over several times and I was so happy with the sound. This past week I brought back my Jazz bass and couldn?t believe the tone I was missing. The Hofner is a bit to get used to - but worth the time invested. It is an incredible hand built bass with tonnes of character. This bass has the tone and power to play almost anything. I am glad to have some other bass? - pretty hard to not have a Jazz or Precision in your collection - but the Hofner is an amazing addition and the one I reach for 90% of the time.

A little bit of 1964 London

By Chris Christiansen

from Calvert, Texas

Comments about Hofner 500/1 Vintage '63 Violin Bass Guitar:

The current Hofner 500/1 stacks up well against the original I bought at Selmers, London in 1964. Lightweight and handy, adequate for most genres and striking in appearance. It handles and plays easily and doesn't try to be something it's not. Too expensive? Sure, but so are all quality axes and amps today. Buy one while you can still afford one.
