Overall i give this bass a very high rating. I've been playing 4 string bass for 10+ years and decided to start adding in 5 string bass to my playing and I got a chance to get a used one of these at a great price. After playing it and a couple of other 5 strings they had I grabbed this - it blew the others away in sound and bang for the buck. I can't say enough about this bass - just a great overall 5 string for anyone who wants to get into playing a 5 string but doesn't want to spend a ton of cash until they find out if it's for them. The only thing i wish is that they would offer more colors - mine was the basic black and they only have the orange - i would have liked a metalic red or maybe white with black hardware would be nice. But - i guess they keep the cost low by minimizing colors. I would rather have good solid features and playability over looks any day. I can recommend this as a great first bass for anyone just getting into bass or who wants to try out playing 5 string but wants the best bang for the buck - this is the bass to get - hands down.
Nice sleek neck - easy to play. Tuning is stable. Decent top load bridge but would have liked a through body loaded one - may change to a different bridge later but it works for now. The controls are - volume for neck pup, volume for bridge pup, master tone and the Phatt II control that boosts the bass. This is not an active bass - the pickups are passive - but the Phatt II control is a booster pre-amp that will fatten up your sound. The pickups are nice soap bar type pickups - a bit more bassy than jazz bass style pups so more meat to them so they will work better for harder core music. These are not active pups - the bass boost comes from the booster circuit that is connected to the Phatt II control (smaller knob) that uses the battery and a small cirtuit board to boost the bass level and really fatten up the sound. The 2 volume controls and the tone control are all passive pots and work just like standard jazz bass control layout.
Ibanez always makes great quality instruments. I have an Ibanez acoustic from back in 1980 that i still have and it is a fantastic guitar and still plays and sounds excellent. I can't believe how great the quality is of these inexpensive Ibanez bass guitars. If i was a newbie this is the bass i would definately get. The workmanship and inspection is very high compared to many other low cost beginner instruments. Great quality.
Once again - for a low priced beginner instrument this is one of the best values you can get. I played several other low priced 5 strings when comparing (and a few higher priced ones) and found that - for the price - this blows the others away.

This is a good instrument for a person who has only been playing for a few months or is just learning bass. It sounds good at first, but after about 5 or so months, it starts to sound like ****. The pick-ups are ok, the bridge is poorly manufactured, and the the bass on whole tends to be poorly put together. If you're just starting up and looking for a good starter 5-string, look no further, but if you're experienced, don't buy this cause you will not be satisfied.

Comments about Ibanez GSR205 5-String Bass:

I have had this 5 string for a couple of weeks now and it is fabulous. I already had the 4 string version and an AS73 Ibanez so I was not surprised by the quality. I expected it and I am not disappointed. I have a couple of SX basses and the action is better on the Ibanez. The active electronics are nice too. I have a Squier telecaster and a Squier vintage custom telecaster. They are great guitars but for the money I decided to go for the GSR 205. I am happy I made this choice.

Comments about Ibanez GSR205 5-String Bass:

This bass came ready to play. The tuning was about a half step down on all strings. Tuned up and action was right on. Have not checked intonation yet but neck is adjusted and the bass sounds great with no buzz. I play music in Church and do home recording. Played bass in Southern Gospel band (Ibanez GSR 200) which is why I bought the five string version.

Comments about Ibanez GSR205 5-String Bass:

Ibanez never ceases to amaze me with their basses. I wanted to try a 5 string and after reading numerous reviews on different lower priced basses I figured I would try this one. Great guitar. Received it with no damage, just needed a little tweak in tuning. Perfect string height, no fret buzz, great intonation. I like my new toy.

Picked one up in a pawn shop for a steal, but would have payed full price for this! It's not expensive and very solid. Played it non-stop and only had to tune it once a week! It has a piano-like growl to the low end, similar to a Warwick. If you are looking to get into the world of 5-strings, this is a good place to start!

Ibanez, I sencerly thank you for creating such a beautiful instrument. I would recommend this bass to anyone that has an intense thirst for metal.

Comments about Ibanez GSR205 5-String Bass:

Jumping from a heavy 4 string Epiphone to this beauty was an awesome experience! It's narrow and comfortable neck is a highlight, I found string spacing not to be a prob. Sound is also great and it has a beautiful rounded shape. I have been using it actively for 3 yrs to now and have to say, it's light weight is definitely one of my favorite features, additionally tuning is very very stable, requiring only small adjustments if weather changes. On the other hand, I had some problems with electronics, some re-welding was needed, battery replacement ain't easy, an snap-on lid would be preferable, but that`s it. With more pros than cons (price included), this bass is a very good choice, it won't disappoint you.

Comments about Ibanez GSR205 5-String Bass:

Since 1978 my primary bass guitar has been a Rickenbacker 4001 Stereo bass I named 'Ricky'. I also own Fender Jazz and Precision basses, and all of the above are 4-string axes. When I visited my local music center in search of a 'Low B' (5-string) I HAD to have this bass guitar. Although I did test the more pricy guitars, the feel and string spacing of this Ibanez bass resembled that of 'Ricky' and the others just did not compare. When it was time I replaced the original strings with some 'Blue Steel' and the sound is unbelievable! Other bass players that have heard it have admired and given it high praises. Bravo, Ibanez, you now have me thinking about a '6-string'!
