The SR Prestige SR4500E electric bass guitar is proudly made in Japan by the finest Ibanez craftsmen from top-of-the-line components. This is the best-sounding & most versatile bass I have ever played in over forty years. I've owned and or tried just about everything out there. This beats my boutique Alembic and costs a lot less.
The tone controls are intuitive; very easy to adjust for different amps, styles and spaces.
On Jazz gigs, the midrange control dials-in that distinctive "Mwah" feeling of an acoustic or fretless, but I get to keep my frets so I can have a drink or two and still be in tune.
Rock gigs, I let the bottom and treble do the heavy lifting with mostly middle pickup, and a little of the bridge PU for definition. Yes you can use a pick with it and it RIPS! The tone controls allow you to quickly adjust for plectrum, fingers or thumbin' 'n' poppin'.
Funk... oh man is this killer! The low end "Phump" balances beautifully with the high end "snap." I don't know if it's the segmented bridge, but it seems like each string sounds clearer than with other designs, even with the same pickups. (which I've had in other basses)
A little compression (from the amp or a pedal) puts this stick so deep in the funk you need to take a shower afterwards. Low notes are instantly identifiable. High notes are crisp but not harsh, unless you want 'em, to be. The consistent low action makes funk fun, like it is supposed to be.
Harmonics jump off the strings like they were overdubbed and mixed hot.
It came out of the box set-up perfectly. Intonation perfect. Very low action, almost no buzz (unless you want some by playing hard.) Low end clarity is superb. Note definition is excellent, even in difficult acoustic-spaces at loud volumes. I did a small tour of outdoor dates with it using two fifteens and I could still hear the notes but with a TON of low end wallop. It plays nicely with a little 8" speaker in my practice amp, or with the two-ten cab I usually use for local gigs.
Several of the drummers I work with have commented that they love the "feel" they get on stage from this axe. These pickups translate the subtlest details of technique so grooves have that consistent dependable volume yet retain the human character of REAL LIVE musicianship. My sound-checks with this usually last ten seconds or less. Sound engineers for both live and studio gigs love it. It records great and seems to "sync" in the sonic spectrum with any style of kick.
It's lightweight and balanced so my back does not ache at the end of a long three or four-set gig. (I use a padded PHAT strap for insurance)
It's just deluxe, solid, beautiful, yet simple. The crafts-people that make these know their stuff. They take pride in their work and it shows. I tried three in Chicago (including the 4000) and they were all just as nice. Consistent quality. Great components. Nice wood selection.
About the only complaint I can make is the placement of the input-jack. I prefer the Strat-style Jack on the top. This one is recessed and that helps a bit, but it is best only when played standing. Sitting for lessons, the jack can sometimes get in the way. Other than that, I have no criticism of this fine instrument. It's as close to perfect as I've ever seen, and I've been playing professionally since 1972. (yeah, I'm old.)
Trust me.. it IS worth the money, even if you must sell other gear or your girlfriend to get it. Tell the singer to buy his own PA. Trade for a smaller car. Do whatever it takes. Make yourself happy. Buy one.
