This is a great bass for metal.  I'd say it's more friendly as a "brighter bass" if you like that "string-clicky" style of metal.  Not to say it can't get thick/full/muddy if needed.  It seems to shine best as a bright slap style bass.  The Alder body really gives it a strong response.  Great for picking, fingerstyle, and Slap/Pop.  It can be as bright or as muddy as you want it to be.  I bought one of the satin black one's used.  I'm not sure it's worth the new price but maybe.  The only problem I noticed was if you use the string-thru option, sometimes the string knots get stuck in the back when you try to remove them.  I just use the topload option of the bridge.  The EMG-HZ passive pickups in combo with the active electronics sound very professional, crisp, clear, and versitile.  The quality is very pro and built like a tank.  It's a one-stop-shop when it comes to bass.  I'm in the market for a 5-string and can't find anything that matches this kind of quality.  Jackson should make a 5-string version of this.  Strong/Solid Axe!  This thing is built for battle!

I love this. I got it a few weeks ago and I'm still amazed. The tones you can get from this are really versatile, the EMG pickups really deliver. It can be aggressive and in your face or mellow and laid back. Great for many styles of music. This is important to me, because I don't really like one bass for one style, I want one bass for many styles. Now I'm not saying this is jazzable, but its great for rock, metal, soul, motown, country, whatever. You name it, you can probably pull the sound from this bass. The EQ is great, really effective. The hardware seems very durable. I can't stress enough how much i love these pickups. ALSO a side note----this bass requires super long scale strings, as its string thru body. I bought long scale strings and the E strings wasn't long enough, so i had to buy another set. In all, i'd recommend this bass to anyone. But as always, its very important (if you're able to) to go to a shop and check it out first, as reviews online will never be able to really tell you how the instrument plays and sounds.
