Great craftsmanship and really IS a nice bass in a very small, lightweight package. Amp it for playing with other people; without an amp, great for practicing. Could be used in the studio; it has an unbelievable stand-up bass vibe, if you were to play jazz with it. Excellent electronics and built in tuner. Actually, I bought this one simply because the cheaper version wasn't available and very glad I did. The silicone strings are interesting, might take a little bit to get used to. Noticed it intonates flat in the higher registers; most of us won't even go up there :) And the weight -- beats lugging around my Fender Jazz Bass any day. Comes with a high quality, lovely padded gig bag. Very satisfied.

Comments about Kala Exotic Mahogany Acoustic U-Bass:

Was wondering what I had done when the LITTLE box came. After opening it and seeing how small it was I almost sent it back. I have a regular Fender Bass. I'm glad I didn't! What a rich sound when plugged into my Fender Rumble 150. Can't put it down! Little adjustment with the close frets, but it is coming. Have a little trouble keeping it in tune but figure with new rubber strings it will get better with time. Rubber strings!? Yea, ya won't believe it. No more sore fingers. Was hoping for a little more sound without being plugged in. It is very nice looking, good worksmanship and SOO small. I still can't believe the sound that comes from such a little package. I already love it and only had it for two days!

Comments about Kala Exotic Mahogany Acoustic U-Bass:

I'll be using the U-bass for travel convenience and recording here and there. Having something this portable isn't reason enough to make this purchase, but the unique, very upright-esque, sound of this instrument makes it a very worthy tool to add to any bassist's arsenal. It plays very well, its hard to put down once you pick it up! Like others have said, it does take a little while to get used to the narrow fret spacing, but it's really not as difficult or inconvenient as that may sound, just a minor hurdle! Another frequent compliant that I noticed was the fact that it goes out of tune very quickly. I would say that this is somewhat true, but certainly not to the point that it becomes unusable or unplayable. Also, the built in tuner all but alleviates this problem, so you're good to go anywhere, anytime!

Comments about Kala Exotic Mahogany Acoustic U-Bass:

I love this Ubass! It is very practical for acoustic gigs and coffee shops. It does not very loud on its on but it is loud enough to play around with for practice purposes. The best thing about it is how it sounds through an amp. I played through my Ampeg cab and head and it will rival the tones of an upright bass! Great purchase!

Comments about Kala Exotic Mahogany Acoustic U-Bass:

This was the best decision I have made for buying an instrument. The cites I usually buy off of don't usually work out, but musician's friend is true to it's name. This bass is my favorite. I have never used anything with this quality and strongly recommend it to any bass player.

Comments about Kala Exotic Mahogany Acoustic U-Bass:

I bought this almost three years ago, so I've had time to live with it before writing this review. Right after I got it, I wished I had got the fretless. I bought it fretted, because I was afraid of finding the pitch on such a small scale neck. Since the tone is so reminiscent of an upright bass, I realized I would have been even happier with the fretless. Very nice quality overall. You have to know what to expect. Others have mentioned the unique strings. Good thing it comes with an onboard tuner, because you'll be winding and winding. Have no fear, the strings can take a lot of winding. Did I mention the winding? Also, you can pop, but you'll get hardly any sound from a slap. If you have to slap and pop all the time, look elsewhere. The tone control is great with the piezo pup, you get volume and tone. You can get it to sit in the mix like an upright. Because of the short scale, the sounds are warm and deep with nice low mid overtones, so it's also good for dub/reggae style in my opinion. Play near the bridge for a more punchy tone. 12th fret's pretty near the end of the neck, so if you're one of those "bass players" who secretly wishes to play guitar, always fiddling about in the dusty end, again look elsewhere. This little thing holds down the low end, like a bass.
I've used it in jams, great when you just don't wanna lug to the session. I also use it to noodle and practice and mess around with home recording, because it's just so easy to pick up and put down. The only problem I would see at gigs is the chance of feedback due to the sound hole. Otherwise, you'll get no complaints.
One of the zippers on my gig bag doesn't work. It just reopens behind itself. Luckily, the other zipper works, so I worried about it a little bit, but that's all.
I hope this review helps others. You want portability, warm sound, you're not trying to play guitar solos above the 12th, and you can get by without slapping, then buy this. Go for the fretless even.
