Lakland

5-string boom with piano-like clarity.

The Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass comes with custom alnico-magnet Lakland pickups: a humbucker at the bridge and a single-coil in the neck. These pickups are teamed with the same 3-band active preamp used in the US-made 55-94 to let you dial in an incredible range of tones. A 3-way toggle for coil splitting increases tonal range. It has that deep Lakland cutaway on the high register side of the maple neck that allows easy access to highest frets for throwing licks on top of your grooves. Ash body with a quilt veneer top and deluxe transparent finish.

Lakland luthiers now do their fret work using Plek technology to assure optimum playability. Plek is a CAD/CAM machine with scanning capability. It was developed to perform high-speed, highly accurate fret dressing, nut and bridge slotting and shaping, and engraving work. When used by an experienced luthier, the Plek machine produces necks with fretwork and action that equal the very best handwork and does it consistently. Case sold separately.

I got the Lakland 55-02 five string bass for Christmas this year and after using it on a few shows this bass sounds awesome. Although I changed the cheap rubber knobs out with some nice Tulip wood knobs that I turned myself, they really set the cherry burst finish off. I had to adjust the neck and the string height but after that it fells like a dream. The new Lakland pickups have a fat bottom sound and work well with the new LH preamp.I have gotten nothing but great compliments on how well the bass sounds. All the Band members and Sound men just love the sound. It's kind of a cross between a Jazz and a Musicman bass. Nice big sound for rock and a good jazz bass sound and feel for slapping. The Bass is well built and has some better features than the Fenders. The bridge seems better that the Fenders and the stringd go through the body. All in All This is a very nice Bass and if you have the funds It should be a good investment and last a long time.

I was quite surprised when I removed the back cover. The printed circuit board was dangling loose inside. It was not mounted to anything. Just laying on a bunch of wires. Now, you might think that's acceptable. Yes, for a very cheap bass. But I have another same model Lakland to compare against. On that one, the PCB is secured to a bracket by two screws. And there is a grounding shielding foil making a contact with the foil on the cover. This new bass doesn't have any of that. I also noticed that the older one is made in Korea. The new one is made in Malaysia. Very bad for Lakland.

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

I recieved this from Musicians Friend on 11-26-2013. Some ash body basses are heavey, this one seems light to me, 9 to 9.5 pound range. The 19mm spaceing works well for me. Very professional articulate sounding bass, from J bass Marcus Miller tone to the thick p bass rock and roll tone. The 3 band eq with blend, coil selector switch, active or passive knob makes this a steal at 1,499.

Absolutely amazing bass I would recommend all serious bass players to purchase this bass guitar. So many tone options , definitely not a one-dimensional bass you can play several styles of music with this.

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

Nicely weighted.Looks and feels good. Though I feel that sometimes the sound is a bit hollow through a MB CMD102, but then maybe I need a bit of time to set the tone. However there is a bit of fret buzz around the 12th fret only on the first string, which a fret dress should fix - else everything else is good value for money - cheers

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

I like the string through the body option. I feel it allows more of the woods tones to come through and give more power to the over all sound. The coil phase switch is a bit weak. I would have like a stronger signal to reveal more tone. thats it everthing else is great.
I own both the 5501 and the 5502 . They are two voices distinked one to the other . I owned the 01 first . What a kikcking bass, I can dial in great smooth lows and still produce cut through it all pops and plucks. The 5502 has a presence that everyone on the band stand can here. People have said to me" Your playing a different bass today? I can here it, the sound is different " I have now in my hands the ability to produce the emotions I feel and the sounds I here in my mind with these basses. All the good things said about these basses are ture and then some. Money WELL spent.

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

Bought this a year ago having never picked one up to feel or play. Awsome. Simply awsome! My only concern is the frets trimmed a little long, and it can be a surprise if you aren't ready for that, hence the 4.5 stars, not 5. Nothing a fret file can't handle. Otherwise, this thing rocks with tone and quality. People love coming up and looking at it, not seeing many around the area.

          Nice!!!

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

I purchased the deluxe in 3 tone sunburst with rosewood fingerboard 1 week ago without ever playing a Lakland. I've been searching for a mid priced 5 to replace my Ibanez 1305PM for some time. Tried quite a few basses in this price range and couldn't find any that compared to my Stingray HH 4 string for playability and tone. When I first received the Lakland I was really thrown off by the neck width. Coming from a Soundgear it's pretty noticeable difference. I even thought of returning it because of this. After a week of solid playing I really fell in love. I'm sure the 55-94 is a bit nicer but for the price difference this is a great value. Let me say, it is not a Stingray, if you're looking for that in your face sound go buy an HH for almost the exact same money and you will not be dissapointed. This feels like a slightly refined Stingray, you can definitely hear the Jazz bass influence as well. I'd love to see a swept mid knob instead of the switches inside but the switches are better than nothing. You get authentic passive tones as an additional option. Volume difference in passive is significant enough that you won't switch in the middle of a song or anything. At least if you're 9v fails you're not left with a 2x4. Finish is beautiful by the way. Couldn't give it a 5 for value only due to the lack of a hardshell case. I found a Fender hardshell that fits it great. I believe it was made for a Jazz bass. I highly recommend this product!

          I am Slap Happy!!

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

I tried this bass out at one of the local stores. I loved the sound that I got out of it so much, I decided that it was going to be my 1st five string. I got my bass, but was concerned because the box was in bad shape. I opened the box and saw that the bass was ok. The finish is awsome (I ordered a cherry sunburst finish with rosewood fingerboard)!! When I took it out, my jaw hit the floor; I've never seen this finish in person and NO picture will do it justice. There were no flaws regarding the finish or frets. I plugged it in and found that it was out of tune and started adjusting it. The peg tuners are the smoothest I've ever dealt with. I start playing- the tone is incredible, as described by previous reviewers, and will enable you to get just about any sound for any genre of music. For those of you that have big hands like I do, the string spacing is sufficient enough for you to slap and pop. For the price, you can't get a better looking, feeling, or sounding bass.

Comments about Lakland Skyline Deluxe 55-02 5-String Bass:

I bought this bass to replace my Fender Squire P-Bass. I play for a traveling ministry team, so this bass is played several times every weekend, not counting practices. The sound is truly amazing. Everyone in my band is amazed by what this bass can sound like. Also, the bass feels amazing. It's just flat out smooth. I picked it up for the first time and felt like I had already been playing it for years. Great Bass, worth the money for sure.
